  • wow, i always loved the quatermain theme, and i didn't even know it was by jerry goldsmith! awesome, thanks for that! :D

  • How did he come up with the score for the omen?

  • @Elizabeththegreatest Goldsmith talks about his experience on the Omen in 'Film Music Masters: Jerry Goldsmith' (available on YouTube). It's interesting how the idea of the score came about.

  • Other great movies that Goldsmiths music was in were "The Sand Pepples", "Tora, Tora, Tora," "Von Ryan's Express", "Poltergeist", "Planet of the Apes" and, "Papillon"

  • Thank you so much for including The 13th Warrior. By far his last great and one of his most underrated score!

  • Logans Run was my first soundtrack i had

still have it on vinyl 35 years later.

    Fanstatic electronic sounds

  • And the "Legend".....?

  • It's a shame two of the flims here he composed "The 13'th Warrior" and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" bombed at the box office. :(

  • Actually Star Trek: The Motion Picture was 4th most popular movie at the box office when it was released in 1979.

Also If you adjust it for today inflation. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is still most successful trek movie at the box office.

  • Wow, I can't believe you left out two of his very best, "Alien" and "Patton!" "First Blood" and "The Mummy" were great ones too!

Even as a child I always preferred Jerry Goldsmith over John Williams. I found Goldsmith's music to be more complex and interesting.

  • If you liked Goldsmith complexity, why mention The Mummy as a great Goldsmith score. It's one of his most bland and generic action score. How about Capricorn One, Total Recall or The Wind and the lion.

I do like Alien and Patton.

  • Okay, I'll give you that, but to be honest I didn't know he did "The Wind and the Lion" very good! However I personally liked the music in the Mummy and yes it did have some generic aspects at times, but it was interesting at times too!

  • @nikosvault, apparently Goldsmith wasn't on good working terms with director Stepehne Sommers on 'The Mummy' and that might explain why it's not up to his usual high standards for that kind of film. Goldmsith was openly critical of both the film and director, which is uncharacteristic, so it must have been a bad experience.

  • I never realized how many films he worked on until today. What a legacy. Very great composer!

  • FLIM FLAM MAN, THE BLUE MAX, RIO CONCHOS, , PATTON....40 years of genius..fitting Elmer B. and Jerry G. passed within months-along with John W, the three greatest modern film composers......the discussion ends there....RIP

  • Elfman is fast staking a claim, like it or not, hm?

  • CHINATOWN!!!!!!!!!!

  • Good work.

Some of my other favorits of his are: Twilight Zone, Planet of the Apes (1968), Capricorn One, Alien, Poltergeist, The Secret of NIMH, Rambo: First Blood, Gremlins, Explorers, Legend (European version) , Rudy, The Shadow, Star Trek: First Contact, Mulan, The Mummy

  • nice video but were's alien

  • WOW, I gotta say, anyone who hears The 13th Warrior and then tries to pass off Narnia as a "masterpiece" needs to get their heads examined LOL. Amazing how much Narnia took from that.

  • Happy Birthday to a truly great film composer...and a truly great composer! Many thanks, Maestro! (Wherever you are...)

  • Thanks for the Upload. A mice medley indeed.

  • i have pretty much every goldsmith score in existence, including all the bootlegs, expanded, unreleased and rejected scores. (hundreds and hundreds) I'd met him twice over the years and dreamed of working with him. I'll tell you, I think one of the very last beautiful themes he wrote (in his final years) is the pastoral end title music for Star Trek: Nemesis. It's almost impossible to make a choice of other favorites, there are too many and i like them all in different ways

  • You used his music from "Escape From The Planet of the Apes" in your "Early 70's Horror Trailer" right?

  • yes, and Mephisto Waltz which was the inspiration for the whole piece. I'm always using his music, just cut a reel last night using "Psycho II" cue's

  • I really dug that. As for Goldsmith he has done a lot of great scores. My favorites have to be "Logan's Run", "Total Recall", "Star Trek: TMP"(Ilia's Theme in particualar) and OMG the discarded score he did for "Legend" was fucking brilliant. "Psycho II"s main theme really fits the Norman Bates character REALLY WELL. It has a sad/child-like quality.

  • WOW! Awesome!! Love your videos!

  • 'In Like Flint' what a superb score.

  • Thanks to you!

  • What happened to Jerry Goldsmith? Did he die?

  • He died three years ago..

  • He died after a four year battle with colon cancer (he was a heavy smoker, and was known to have a cigarette in his hand at a recording session).

  • Jerry goldsmith el maestro. Descanse en paz. Siempre lo echaremos de menos

  • Jerry Goldsmith was the best!

  • FANTASTIC! Jerry is the reason I got into film scores in the first place (The Secret of NIMH will always hold a special place in my heart for that very reason). I can't wait for part 2! He would be proud! (looking forward to hearing Mulan and First Knight sometime in this tribute ;))

  • When will you do part II?

Ideas for additions to part II: Alien, Secret of NIMH, Gremlins

  • Not sure yet..."Alien,"L.A. Confidential" and "Patton" will be included, among others.

  • Oh, and I almost forgot...Dimitri Tiompkin!

  • 0:59

Remind anyone of a current President?

    Facially, I mean.

  • It could very well be.

  • Not only did he do film themes but alos some great TV themes, SG1 for example. What a fantastic composer!!!

  • Hang on, let's clear up this inaccuracy. JERRY Goldsmith did NOT have anything to do with Stargate SG-1. His SON (Joel Goldsmith) composed the theme tune, based on David Arnold's themes originally penned for the 1994 Stargate motion picture.

  • I stand corrected! But he obviously picked up the musical gene from his Dad!!!

  • There's no doubting that! :) The Goldsmith greatness lives on.

  • Apologies, I found that out not long after I posted this comment!!!

  • To answer your question about other great film composers there's Ennio Morricone, John Barry, John Williams, Bernhard Hermann Elmer Bernstein, Henry Mancini, Maurice Jarre... that should do for now.

  • yeah, and add Han Zimmer, James Horner and Leonard Bernstein :-)

  • can anyone tell me somke good drama music composers?

  • The only composer of the three best of all time and only one Oscar for it.Shame.I love his scores so much.I actually cried then,in july of 2004 when I heard he died.

  • 大好きです

  • the edge, one of my favorite soundtracks by goldsmith.ts soo hard to find though and expensive as only a few cds were made

  • Movies quite simply, will never be the same again. Mr Goldsmith's music helped me make it through some of the worst periods of my life. The man was a gift from God.

  • Agreed. "Basic Instinct" is my favorite composition of music ever. It has helped me through so much I can't even begin to estimate its value. I wish I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Goldsmith in person and shake his hand for what he's done for me before he passed away---and what he's done for everyone else. If anything, we have his spirit embodied in the music he bestowed on us forever, I am always grateful for that.

  • Sadly missed but never forgotten Sir.

  • Basic instinkt is best!!!

  • Thank you Jerry!

  • what was the song in basic instinct and the omen?

  • britney spears at 1:52

  • I have a question for Jerry Goldsmith fans, about one of the timeless songs/compositions he has written. There is a song on one of the Twilight Zone episodes, called "To Serve Man". This song/composition has also appeared on other Twilight Zone episodes. Thanks if you can help.

  • "To Serve Man" was a tracked episode (no original scoring).

  • Good selections, although I would have included 'Rambo' and 'Legend' as well.

  • "Rambo" really is an exceptional soundtrack

  • WHat about the soundtrack to "The Edge"? That ones beautiful.

  • I love it, too.

  • He should have won another oscar for his "Basic Instinct" theme.

  • Im wearing earphones so when you transitioned to The Omen is freaking scared me lol.

  • Great job... we will waiting for the part 2

  • Nice selection, but 'Alien' is missing...

  • Coming Soon..."The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith part 2" (will include Alien)

  • I love Old Baghdad. Always been a sucker for those epic feeling pieces.

  • Listen to "Tuareg Attack" from the Mummy soundtrack. What a great piece!!!!

  • This is awesome.

    Very cool :]

I love the Total Recall score the most.

  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture is his best work by far.

  • Maybee i agree...he wrote three wonderful themes for that: main title, ilia's theme(the one in here) and klingon´s theme.

  • 違いのわかる男。ゴールドスミス。

  • Jerry = Versatility

  • Nice job, great montage of image and music. Goldsmith was a Master like no other and I appreciate your tribute to him here. Great work!

  • Really love that you put in some not so typical clips, such as the 13th warrior and King Solomons Mines (I love the last few tracks of that score, great!) Love theme=fantastic.

  • Nice selection, he was truly a master!

  • Thanks!! :))
