@Elizabeththegreatest Goldsmith talks about his experience on the Omen in 'Film Music Masters: Jerry Goldsmith' (available on YouTube). It's interesting how the idea of the score came about.
Other great movies that Goldsmiths music was in were "The Sand Pepples", "Tora, Tora, Tora," "Von Ryan's Express", "Poltergeist", "Planet of the Apes" and, "Papillon"
If you liked Goldsmith complexity, why mention The Mummy as a great Goldsmith score. It's one of his most bland and generic action score. How about Capricorn One, Total Recall or The Wind and the lion.
Okay, I'll give you that, but to be honest I didn't know he did "The Wind and the Lion" very good! However I personally liked the music in the Mummy and yes it did have some generic aspects at times, but it was interesting at times too!
@nikosvault, apparently Goldsmith wasn't on good working terms with director Stepehne Sommers on 'The Mummy' and that might explain why it's not up to his usual high standards for that kind of film. Goldmsith was openly critical of both the film and director, which is uncharacteristic, so it must have been a bad experience.
FLIM FLAM MAN, THE BLUE MAX, RIO CONCHOS, , PATTON....40 years of genius..fitting Elmer B. and Jerry G. passed within months-along with John W, the three greatest modern film composers......the discussion ends there....RIP
Some of my other favorits of his are: Twilight Zone, Planet of the Apes (1968), Capricorn One, Alien, Poltergeist, The Secret of NIMH, Rambo: First Blood, Gremlins, Explorers, Legend (European version) , Rudy, The Shadow, Star Trek: First Contact, Mulan, The Mummy
WOW, I gotta say, anyone who hears The 13th Warrior and then tries to pass off Narnia as a "masterpiece" needs to get their heads examined LOL. Amazing how much Narnia took from that.
i have pretty much every goldsmith score in existence, including all the bootlegs, expanded, unreleased and rejected scores. (hundreds and hundreds) I'd met him twice over the years and dreamed of working with him. I'll tell you, I think one of the very last beautiful themes he wrote (in his final years) is the pastoral end title music for Star Trek: Nemesis. It's almost impossible to make a choice of other favorites, there are too many and i like them all in different ways
I really dug that. As for Goldsmith he has done a lot of great scores. My favorites have to be "Logan's Run", "Total Recall", "Star Trek: TMP"(Ilia's Theme in particualar) and OMG the discarded score he did for "Legend" was fucking brilliant. "Psycho II"s main theme really fits the Norman Bates character REALLY WELL. It has a sad/child-like quality.
FANTASTIC! Jerry is the reason I got into film scores in the first place (The Secret of NIMH will always hold a special place in my heart for that very reason). I can't wait for part 2! He would be proud! (looking forward to hearing Mulan and First Knight sometime in this tribute ;))
Hang on, let's clear up this inaccuracy. JERRY Goldsmith did NOT have anything to do with Stargate SG-1. His SON (Joel Goldsmith) composed the theme tune, based on David Arnold's themes originally penned for the 1994 Stargate motion picture.
To answer your question about other great film composers there's Ennio Morricone, John Barry, John Williams, Bernhard Hermann Elmer Bernstein, Henry Mancini, Maurice Jarre... that should do for now.
The only composer of the three best of all time and only one Oscar for it.Shame.I love his scores so much.I actually cried then,in july of 2004 when I heard he died.
Movies quite simply, will never be the same again. Mr Goldsmith's music helped me make it through some of the worst periods of my life. The man was a gift from God.
Agreed. "Basic Instinct" is my favorite composition of music ever. It has helped me through so much I can't even begin to estimate its value. I wish I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Goldsmith in person and shake his hand for what he's done for me before he passed away---and what he's done for everyone else. If anything, we have his spirit embodied in the music he bestowed on us forever, I am always grateful for that.
I have a question for Jerry Goldsmith fans, about one of the timeless songs/compositions he has written. There is a song on one of the Twilight Zone episodes, called "To Serve Man". This song/composition has also appeared on other Twilight Zone episodes. Thanks if you can help.
Really love that you put in some not so typical clips, such as the 13th warrior and King Solomons Mines (I love the last few tracks of that score, great!) Love theme=fantastic.
wow, i always loved the quatermain theme, and i didn't even know it was by jerry goldsmith! awesome, thanks for that! :D

It's a shame two of the flims here he composed "The 13'th Warrior" and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" bombed at the box office. :(
NodDisciple1 2 years ago
Actually Star Trek: The Motion Picture was 4th most popular movie at the box office when it was released in 1979.
Also If you adjust it for today inflation. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is still most successful trek movie at the box office.

Wow, I can't believe you left out two of his very best, "Alien" and "Patton!" "First Blood" and "The Mummy" were great ones too!
Even as a child I always preferred Jerry Goldsmith over John Williams. I found Goldsmith's music to be more complex and interesting.

He died after a four year battle with colon cancer (he was a heavy smoker, and was known to have a cigarette in his hand at a recording session).
