This is a great pass, I have used it many times. Another tip: if you can't reach the wrist by reaching around the back of his neck, just reach in front of the top of his head to grab the wrist, then pull his arm into position under his chin.
very nice video! i usually get that arm triangle choke from that situation, but against big guys my own arms just get tired with it cause it usually dont make them tap. now i got way better option for that situation :)
question what if the guy on top decides to use his right arm to prevent the giftrap? if he grabs your right hand with his before you cant fish out his left you wouldnt have the control right?
You originally had a choke where you had his arm to the side and your left arm wrapped around his neck. If you locked your right arm and locked it, it would've been very tight, Bas Rutten has a great video of it. Usually the simple chokes work best, but great vid +5
yeah genius, its called an arm triangle or head and arm choke... if you payed attention to the video he mentions it at 4:11. But im sure he appreciates you enlightening him just the same.
I wanted to feature one of Richard's videos on Submissions 101 so I asked him to do one for me. I thought it would be cool for my subscribers to learn about his site too.
hey guys thanks for all your help in these videos. i've been watching them and i really learned a lot i used some of the moves on our grappling classes and i won like 3 straight cause of your videos. kudos to you man
The whole basis of the sweep depends on taking away his base. By gift wrapping the opponents arm around his own head, you effectively take away his main tool for posting and blocking the sweep when you under hook the leg (and lift).
This is one of my favorite techniques. There are a few important details to add. Although you can set it up the way shown in the video, that way is not very common. If someone puts their forearm across your throat like that, they are setting themselves up for an armdrag. Hence it is not very common. In fact, the armdrag is a good way to get control of the arm before doing the move. I will keep control of his wrist and feed it to my other hand. This is better than just "fishing" for the hand.
many paths, one family. I really like Richard. I think the kid is a class act. No one person has a monopoly on moves-we all learn from each other after all.
Hmm, I need to drill that. I've got a pretty good grip and have been working on my arm triangles. I can apply that here to busting somebody in the face. Sweet.
I think he called it "the gift wrap sweep" because when you have that control with the arm across the face, a lot of academies call that "the gift wrap" because the arm is "wrapped" tight around their face. So, since he's using the "gift wrap" to aid him with the sweep, he called it the "gift wrap sweep".

First off great video, appreciate the multiple camera angles
Question, is it possible to sweep effectively without grabbing the opponents arm/wrist?

This is how I too do my set up (a modified arm drag: see video response above) although Richard goes into far more detail in his video.
I think its time to redo our older vids ;-)
Thanks to Rich for doing this for us.

I agree. I learn as much from his videos as I do from yours.
I'm actually the guy who alerted him when the server hosting his videos crashed, which is why they're hosted by YouTube now.
