  • or...if everything goes south, it appears that there are numerous large fields with whcih to make a safe landing. Gliders are designed for "out" landings...although you prefer to not do this with an expensive ship.

  • The glider's sink rate at >100kts is quite high, so it descends until its sink rate matches the upward velocity of the air over the ridge. We picked a speed which put us close to the ridge top.

Since the ridge was working well, slowing down to about 45kts allowed us to climb up to about 1200' above the ridge top. That was sufficient height to fly the 10km back to Aston Down. If you fly the correct route, you get home at about 800' AGL, which is plenty for a circuit.

  • Nice! Watch out for the picnic tables!

  • wats the whole "fin" bit about at the end?

  • It's a joke. Fin as in Stabilizer crossed with Fin as in finished.

  • needed music

  • Normally gliders don't fly above cloud. If you do, most probably when wave soaring, you have to keep an eye on any landmarks you can see through the gaps, or use a GPS.

  • That's kool. Hope I can go OTT in a glider sometime it looks fun.
