  • Great job guys!

  • nice idea but kind of pithy , the music says everything.

  • rather than treating the symptom, why not focus on treating the cause? why are these people poor??

  • @ogp12 Well, why not treat the symptoms while treating the cause at the same time?

  • @uraldneprvw that's ok too, but i don't see any new ideas on how to get millions of africans out of poverty

  • Nice idea, but.....more"cleaner" water to help raise more and more and more and more parasitic humans(yes "westerners' are also parasitic) on this already overcrowded overpopulated increasingly polluted planet. The FIRST problem isn't trying to get cleaner water to those in the "poorest" countries or even to feed them,it's to get the population to "DECREASE BY INDIVIDUAL CHOICE FIRST and THEN they have to choose to work on environment, water, food etc.

  • looks like the bike is made of plastic, guess the filter is a paper type. doubt the wheels will hold up on dirt roads. 20 gallions of water weights about 140 pounds not getting to far on peddle power.

  • that could drill a well all so with five kids to take turns the africans will have drinking water grate job

  • they are going to get thirsty with all that pedaling - can you see the vicious cycle (pun intended)

  • Cool concept even if not too practical. A better idea is plans for a bracket that can go over the back wheel and connect to the back axle. The bracket can hold two 5 gallon buckets (universal and cheap). 10 gallons of water is 83.5 lbs, heavy but not nearly like the 20 gallons in the Aquaduct. Publish the plans so anyone can build it. Then allow the water to be boiled, filtered or chemically treated. The bracket could also hold buckets for hauling other things ( food, work materials, children).

  • good idea and make it better and better at next trip.

  • So what happens when the bike has a mechanical problem? how do you plan on making this bike affordable? How well will this oversized bike work on pot-holed roads? This does not address the problem. Water is undrinkable because corporations and industries are polluting it. Unaffordable bicycles built by rich white kids is not the solution. If you want to help people in the developing world, then advocate against global corporatism and help start a revolution; stop producing capitalist band-aids

  • this is wonderful. about ruddy time our intelligence has been proved through marvels such as this and the minds that have brought them to reality. i shall do a little research and after checking a few things out, will see price and shipment of your incredible little trike-aduct. Thank you so much for this.

  • Excellent idea!!

  • Very cool, but this isn't the best way. When the filter gets dirty, and you don't know, what happens? Well, using this you can make electricity, that electricity transfers to heat, boils water, possibly making steam, and BAM! It might be more expensive, though. I'm not sure, but for long time use, it's better than buying a filter all the time.

  • yeah but who is going to pay for the bike in the first place? also maintenance, parts, filter replacements will also cost more than people i third world countries can afford. :/ a simple glass type solar distilation system would cost only a few dollars, need no maintenance (except of the ocasional cleaning of the glass) and could be affordable by anyone.

  • That's so cool.

  • except there isnt a filter which can clean parasite contaminated water nor any real harmful chemical

  • Its nice but will a poor family be able to afford this

  • @crzune I don't think the poor people will have to purchase these, the bikes should be purchased by charity organisation such as Water Aid and then donated to these people.

  • what if a tire pops? they dont have bike shops there to fix that lol

how good is the filter? does it need to be replaced? whos ganna pay for that?

  • or you could just get in everyone in the dumb nigger village to pee in the tank and take turns riding it around the dead cows and piles of shit

  • This is a very thoughtfull and great idea

  • DID YOU KNOW THE THE YOU CAN USE THE SAME WATER TO SATISFY ALL YOUR ENERGY NEEDS OR YOU COULD USE THE VERTICAL WINDMILL TO DO ALL THE WORK OF THAT BICYCLE OF USE A FERNEL LENS A PABOLIC DISH SOLAR COLLECTOR A VACUUM CUBE SOME ALUMINUM FINS AND ALL YOUR CLEAN WATER AGRARIAN AND ENERGY NEEDS WOULD BE FURNISHED ALL IT TAKE TO DO THIS IS FOR YOUR COMMUNITY BE CLOSE TO A LARGE BODY OF WATER LIKE A LAKE RIVER OR SEA

  • @rodrick4500 cap's DUMBASS!!!!!!

  • um wat bout making the plastic for the bike

  • what happens if one of your jealous neighbors gets sooo jealous they pour a whole bag of sugar in your tank? will you take home a gallon of diet coke?

  • Господи!

  • Can this bike be able to be pedalled by a women, as water fetching is done by women and children in most of the less income countries? Besides, the roads are rugged and pedalling without load is difficult. Please let me know whether this has been put to the test in Africa or other countries.

  • simple and innovative :))

  • It is now some three years ago this was presented. What has happened since then? Did this even got launched towards end users or a possible manufacturer? What's the purpose of having a competition in this (important) field of basic needs if nothing practical comes out of it?

Or was this more a way to advertise about Googles (dormant?) benevolent side, or was it just a way for the participants to get something nice on their merit list?

    Just wonder...

    /mtm

  • Have they started stilling moonshine in it or making Jenkum with it yet? Hahhahaa. Foreign aid is stupid.

  • Well done, but even better would be to extract the water from the air

by using cooling techniques. Inside the air there is so much water stored...

No need to go these long ways...

  • So beautiful, on so many level, simplicity, form, function, practicality, humanitarian. Wonderful, wonderful job. Bravo!

  • its cool

  • "women must devote hours of labor just to meet their family's basic needs" I think she means hours of making sandwiches.

  • Why do we feel the need to go and solve everyone else's problems, why can they not solve their own problems Why?

  • @detroitr it would make america look like a big asshole if we only did things for ourselves, when there is a war and were involved nobody would want to help us...

    THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!

  • @ICETEEBAG Hahahhaha. No one will do anything for us anyway, and we've poured hundreds of billions into foreign countries. Look now how China and Israel bully USA, yet USA continues to spend money on them as fast as can be printed.

  • @stopglobalswarming i no ritw, its rediculous how much we go out of our way and they continue to be dicks to us...just wanna slap em all across the face

  • @detroitr more knowledge for us, wooo

  • this should work perfectly for africa mostly.. and a good way to have exercise too

  • That is one of the most fantastic things I have ever seen, people in Congo would really need this tech. God bless you all !!!

  • in the video it showed them boiling the water to kill bacteria, to my knowledge how fast the trike was able to fill that 2 gal. i don't think it would be an alternative to "clean" drinkable water, but it is a move in the right direction ^^

I'm guessing this invention would be donated to the third world countries? its probably more expensive then a huffy from wal-mart XD. Or are they going to trade goats for it...? im serious lol, there's a program to donate money to buy them goats.

  • i dont understand, how is this gonna help keep the populations down in third world countrys?

  • what a great idea, not only the bike but the water too,im impressed.

  • i better take a bottle with water in my bag..this is shit:-q

  • Somebody suggested innovators need to ask what the 3rd world poor need or want----do you think these people don't want or need clean water or a "green" method of transporting it? I don't get it. By the way, filters are cheap, that's not a problem, expense would be supplying the bikes, and I think there's enough aid money being spent everywhere that this cost would be easily absorbed. And think of all the money saved when health is better and stress is less because of having clean water.

  • @iciavosser Although however noble the cause may be, one word: Roads. It's a 3rd world country, most of which isn't paved or have proper roads... foot paths at best between the water source and where they live BUT as a stationary object being able to filter the water, brilliant idea. I'd invest in a portable but sizable water treatment unit with reservoir tanks so it wouldn't need to be filled every day and they can be safe when consuming the water.

  • It's a very good idea...

  • I wonder if the designers of this consulted with people in third world countries? Because it looks to me like more of the American "we're going to help the poor brown people" BS. If you really want to help poor people, start off by consulting with them to see what their needs are. Then work with them to figure out how to best meet their needs. Also, make your design cheap and easy to build. And make it open source. Whirlwind wheelchairs is a great example of this.

  • nice idea but people who need it won't have the $ to buy one...

  • LOL notice how its a she.

  • wow.

now if i wasnt laid-off and broke ,

i would donate one to someone who needs one of these

  • FUCK YOU AL-GORE!!!

  • this is a fantastic idea.

you ask how are poor people machine could help ane able to afford this ? they are not going to. how ever this one machine alone would service an entire village, please dont give up on this, this machine WILL SAVE THOUSANDS OF LIVES EACH DAY

  • Could the bike's pump push water thru this filter? Replacement Filters for Aquasana Drinking Water Filters Model # AQ-4025

  • who makes the Trike ???

  • Why not just make a bike that is capable of hauling water and a gravity-feed filter system that is kept at home? What is the benefit of putting a pump and filter on the bicycle? It adds a lot of moving parts and potential problem areas. Simplicity seems more important than integration of components here.

  • Maybe all bamboo frame and (rope transmission) would be a sollution folks. Of course plant-based lashings and filtered pitch to bind it!!! Look it up here on youtube (bamboo bike) Missing a key!?!, Make one!!

  • the world needs less people. figure out away to have the bike sterile the person riding it

  • @potterscotter You are an idiot deserving to streralised yourself just to insure that your genetic line will not continue to poison the human race

  • @PTNashclan you know im right. less people would make for a better life for all of use. more people is not making for a better world.

  • @potterscotter I totally agree with you, population control is somethiing thats gonna be a big problem in the near future

  • @1987kids its a big problem right now

  • This is an amazing idea. Since there are some people in developing are still learning how to ride a bike or have never ridden one before, the tricycle design is great. It has great looks and is easy to use. The one and only thing that the bike would need is gears for getting up hills. Other than that, I think it will change the lives for so many people. These are the types of things that we should invest in. Saving peoples lives 1 bike at a time. =)

  • @comicozy87science i like the ideas of gears but, they can be a $itch when there messed up or out-of-tune. so im thinking a 3 speed inturnal gear hub would be better. just a cable. no derailer or nothing

  • cool good luck great idea

  • Where to buy?

  • yeah, but how much water sloshes around while ur driving?

  • Love the inovation. This really makes sense !!!!

  • Good idea :)

  • uhm...yeah...are you going to deliver these"Aquaduct" to africa or what?

    good luck on your company

  • hmm.. I do wonder how people in third world countries are going to afford this design but nevertheless, I think this is a great solution !

  • This is ingenious! However, the maintenance of the unit might not lend it to being a practical solution for people in areas such as South Africa or rural parts of the US. How long will they last? How specialized are the parts? Theft?

The long term solution is to dig wells so that clean water is accessible to everyone.

  • Do you want to see " The World's Simplest Transmission " for Bicycle?

Watch: UNIQUE BIKE CRANK ( 2- SPEED)

  • that is just awesome :3

I hope they're cheap to make...

  • can i bye one

  • Very impressive. So simple yet so effective. Well done.

  • Both comment regarding the urgent requirement for /any/ working solution, and the comment regarding sustainability of the solution are valid. Instructions on creating activated charcoal and a reusable filter container would help. Bigger, modular tanks and ruggedized, sealed bearings. I have lived with the people who could use systems like this, but you have other issues too - theft. If you do not get enough of these units into an area to fill demand, people may lose their lives over them.

  • Especially the areas where these kind of applications are needed, I forsee some other practical issues.

Many roads are e.g. steep, bumpy, small, consist mainly of sand, sharp stones that may pierce the tyres, etc., which makes the use of the bike as transport medium impractical in many areas.

    Idea:

A mountain bike with a solid platform for transporting the water, plus a stationary filter, which is located e.g. in a big barrel would serve the needs better in my opinion.

    Regards from Mexico

  • A beautifully designed bike and well thought about a killing problem, congratulations! Some questions and comments:

What about pre-filtering of the water? The source water in the example seems pretty clean.

That said, free of insects and other type of dirt usually found in wells, ponds or rivers.

This dirt can clot the filter, pump, or tubes easily.

In poor areas people are generally not well educated and will struggle performing maintenance on the bike / pump.

  • Bravo. This is simply genious. Simple, efficient; genious!

  • Do you want to see THE WORLD'S SIMPLEST TRANSMISSION for Bicycle?

Watch: UNIQUE BIKE CRANK ( 2- SPEED)

  • Pollution. Besides, with the motor and gasoline tank everything, there would be no room for the water and the filter, and even if there was, it could get gasoline inside of it which would be catastrophic.

  • Awesome!

  • How much does this invention cost? Can people with motor bikes with oil drums slapped on afford? What are the pros vs cons compared to having a separate water filter at home and a trike with a water tank? How durable is it? How long does the filter last? Seems more practical to have a stationary pedal powered device.

  • well the idea is that the US would donate the bikes to third world countries I suppose. We already donate computers, schools, food, books, and clothes... so bikes with water filters seem like very plausible and useful donations.

  • they should put it in places like the Philippines =]

  • AWESOME!!! I'll spread the word for you. One question: how much does the bike weigh fully loaded?

  • I don't know how much it actually weights but 20 gallons of water is going to weigh about 160 pounds.

  • freaking brilliant. i'll buy stock in this gadget.

  • Have to say it looks a bit dorky, but, if it works then hell its a great product for poorer countries.

  • yeah they could work their whole lifes to buy a 300 lb bike. wouldn't a filter at home be a little smarter? they work with gravity instead of human strength.

  • any updates on this going into production? i would be interested in organizing a fundraiser to send them where they are needed.

  • this is an amazing concept we in the us take for granted what we have, i would love to own one of these. we are a blessed country, but beware of these weary times.

  • how much for this and where can I buy one

  • i give you a B+

  • this is the most amazing thing i have ever seen it will change the world

  • brilliant!!! How much will it cost for people in developing countries

  • yess very clever!!

  • this is briliant, just briliant

  • this is aswome keep up the good work

  • ok how about when its time to replace the filter??how would these people get a new one..wait till "you"ship it to them while they drink crap water? and if they cant afford clean water how ar ethey going to afford this bike?

  • i think thats the point where their govt has to step in and subsidize

  • good luck with that i guess lol

  • I wonder if decent local water reservoirs and redistribution schemes wouldn't wind out being much cheaper (and more efficient) than everyone having their filtering-water-bike. Maybe their transport for larger water quatities could be a huge tandem water-filtering bike, however. But even then I think that it's likely that a motorized transport is cheaper, and will add less energy expenditures, and so pollute less as well. It's a nice idea and a admirable intention, anyway.

  • cool idea but how do u think those people can buy one of those if the cant buy normal water

  • I was just about to comment, now all they have to do is give every family one for free.

  • nice, now we only need to improve the roads.

  • awesome

  • True that anything can be fixed in a third world country..These people are very resourceful. About parts for the bikes incase of a break down...Small problems with workable solutions. Big picture..Lets just get the bike out to these folks...Looks like the best solution for some of you azz holes is to simply do nothing and call it quits...Awesome solution well done...

  • @WLKCONSULTING I agree that this idea is commendable and third world citizens are wonderfully resourceful, but the idea to "just get the bike out..." is just naive. That's led to inefficiencies and problems like dilapidated wells. People are not assholes. Cynical... skeptical... overly critical... probably, but I've never met someone who just doesn't care.

Youtube wont let me post links so check out TED talks: Water filter and bamboo bikes for other solutions.

  • @WLKCONSULTING its great that we love to help those that are out there in other countries and obviously need help, but sometimes we forget that we too have problems that need fixing so we don't get into the same problem they are in

  • really brilliant

  • this seems like a great idea

the biggest problem with it that I see though is that it doesn't really seem like a long term solution. If you give this thing to people in 3rd world countries, how long 'til something breaks on it and it's just sitting there useless and unused? 6 months? a year maybe? someone needs to maintain it

  • I've lived in a third world country and they can fix ANYTHING with nothing. Necessity is the mother of invention...

  • beautiful

  • Comment removed

  • cool!

  • Nice!

  • how are people in third world countries going to afford this. What happens when the filter needs changing and they cant afford one. Also the tires would be more practical if they were solid rubber, no worries about tires going flat.

  • @rthom86

  • @rthom86 give money??

  • and people who don't have water are going to buy a bike? so who pays for this? who is going to maintain them? its a good idea but very impractical

  • @TheDigitalguyy ... um, if you did some research, governments around the world set aside world relief monetary funds to help solve issue that afflict the people of un-cared for nations. If you watch Dragon's Den, you would have seen a mobile water filtration invention by 2 college students where the final product wasnt even done and the U.K. gov't already pitched in millions to purchase and seas it overseas. God Bless

  • This is such a brilliant idea!

  • omg! thats like the best idea EVER!!

  • It's not just for drinking you moron.

  • Haha every fucking comment I see from you, you try to act so tough over the fucking internet. Such a fucking bullshit e-thug u r .

  • That's because you're an ape who still hasn't figured out how to cook, wash your hands, bathe or flush a toilette.

  • there's talk of dehumidifers that make water where humidity is high

  • great i guess that is not for free

  • Great idea and great work constructing it. Btw, what kind of filters does it use? Does the filters need to be replaced from time to time due to particles from water? Does it potabilize water or just clean suspension particles?

  • great idea

  • this is an awesome idea and id like to see all the pessimists think of a better solution than this!

  • Great idea!

  • wow, I had no Idea how many idiots were out there. guess they have never had to get water themselves or live a REAL LIFE..

thanks for this...I know it is of good use.

  • So stupid. Btw no mention of how long you need to go to clean a few liters of water. I wonder why... Why do we put money in such stupid projects instead of putting it in some viable projects that aim to bring clean water to villages and populations that do not have access to it??

  • great idea.if i lived in a poor country this would look like a limo to me.

  • Good idea, but why the silly backing music? Am I moron, do I need sad music to help me understand?

  • That is Awesome!!! Great idea

  • sounds like the Gary Jules version of Mad World

  • i believe ur right

  • whats the song?

  • This idea doesn't hold water.

  • This is still freaking stupid. Just wanted to remind everyone.

  • looks kind of impractical for now but I'd say it's a big step in the right direction.

  • replacement filters, bacterial contamination of the closed receptacle, and required repairs of the mechanical unit, including replacement inner-tubes make it simply unattainable in its current state.

But we know that these sorts of innovations actually are initial steps toward a (sometimes distantly) related final product.

    Good idea. 5/5

  • This is much too expensive for the third world. Being single purpose make it worse. If the design allowed for transport of goods ass well (so they can make a living of it) one could consider it feasible, but it still needs to become much cheaper and simpler.

  • doesn't hold enough water and is way too expensive

  • Great Invention!

  • does it have an mp3 player built in?

  • yeh, it comes with 20" plasma and auto-pilot as well

    idiot!

  • that's awesome.... though.. can family's in the third world actually afford this?

  • it looks more like they would share the bike between a few families, & each have their own 'clean' container, need to also be able to keep the spout pipe end clean. // another idea would be have a long small hose-pipe & have a pedal pump on the end with a filter. // think about hills water would be from above or below, need to pumped, only step stairs to access village. // filter plus UV solar, mobile village system better// but this is a good idea for flatter areas. I like cycling.

  • Great going guys! You should make a carbon version so that its light!!!

  • Great idea guys!

  • Wow, carrying that water must make that bike heavy lol. Still, its a very cool idea. Until the filter needs changing.

  • great idea, but it's spelled aqueduct..unless of course you meant for it to be that

  • What a crock of crap, man-made global warming. If people could afford these Aquaduct cycles & the many filters needed to filter the kind of crap out of their water supply, then they could pool their money together and drill a clean well that will outproduce & outlast this piece of crap.

Use the motorcycle and burn the wood, there is no such thing as man-made global warming. We are not causing other planets to warm either, but they are.

  • i love how all these student project videos always drop something in about pollution. like it really matters that it doesn't "pollute" when you claim to have 5000 children a day dying of thirst (OMG THE CHILDRENSSSSSS!!!!!111).

i think you need to work on your priorities, then make a more efficient design using a motorbike engine that can filter enough for a whole village per day. one family probably cant afford this bike, but a village might be able to pool resources and get a larger pump.

  • seems like a better idea than any you've come up with. oh wait, you don't have any ideas?

  • you first. i already stated my idea (motorbike engine powered pump for a whole village)

I'll build you a prototype and make a video, just send your bank account number and routing number to my buddy N'Tambo in Nigeria for funding. i assure you that your rich uncle you didn't know you had died in a plane crash and we just want to fund our project with part of your inheritance, while we transfer the rest to your account. you can trust me!

  • sure

  • very good idea but america is too dumb to mass produce something like that

  • If you don't like America, move your punk ass away.

  • reminds me of the movie 'waterworld'

  • AMAZING

  • omg pollution aaarrrggg

  • amazingly stupid.... wow.... this idea is so stupid i could scream.

  • then post up your idea of something to clean water that doesn't require a motor or expensive maintainance.
