@BluBoulzor not to say i'm one of those kids who wants to jerk Sephiroth off but if you play the other games surrounding FF7, watch the movie, and read up a little about it, there's more to Sephiroth than you think. I will agree he isn't the greatest villian tho, Kefka certainly takes the cake on that.
I don't mean to try to offend anybody's opinion, but I feel like Square still puts out good stuff. And I gotta say, I couldn't think of anybody who could fit the Final Fantasy series but Masashi, if Nobuo isn't doing the music. Hamauzu-san made some of the best music in the series on XIII. If you really look at it without the bias I think a lot of us may naturally have, his music is truly breathtaking and refreshing. I mean, Square has had a few misses lately, but they're far from washed up imo.
How can people call FFVI terrible? Or FFVII gay? Both games are incredible. I understand having favorites but why does there have to be a war over it? And no, I don't expect it to stop. I just wanna know if anyone can offer a good, NON-OPINIONATED, reason for there to be this big FF6 STINKS, FF7'S GAY! thing going on. @PeanutButterGoodness FF6 is awesome and FF7 sucks. The reason why ? It has nothing to do with the game. The game is decent. It's because the fanboys of that game are the worst of the universe. Even WoW and DotA fanboys have nothing on FF7 fanboys. They're all over Sephiroth who is one of the worst villain in any video games ever. The dude is getting controlled by his mum and half the game it's not even him it's fucking Genova who does bad shit. Plus it's 3d. Yuck.
@danielstipp misplaced comment, making those comments is when you compare shitty things to Twilight. Why the fuck do you compare an epic masterpiece like FF6 to Twilight?
The phoenix scene where it grants locke one final time to talk to rachel was truly epic..not even aeris being stabbed 7 times by sephiroth could be at par with it.. I mean...WHo would not want to have one final time with a dying flame? or anyone you love who is at their deathbed for that matter..? I would search the ends of the earth for such an artifact if it could grant me closure...
I remember when I was a kid, I always thought it was the battle songs and things like Devil's Lab (more action packed-stuff) that were OMG AWESOME (and, they are awesome). Listening through the soundtrack this many years on, though, the songs that stick with me the most from that game are the emotional ones: this, Relm's Theme, and the Aria. It's just an amazing soundtrack; arguably the best ever.
Grand jeu , grandes musiques qui me marqueront à vie.
@Farentir Final fantasy 4 may have not been as awesome in terms of storyline compared to FF6..but IT sure did open the eyes of MANY people to the world of FINAL FANTASY and many such other RPG's out there...so yes FF4 IS important and has it's place in history. awesome game..
Yes... One of the most memorable and most beautiful song in FF history. At least for me. Uematsu's best work was in this game. This is the best RPG game I have ever played. And, holy shit how beautiful this song is. This song makes me almost cry, it's so great and epic. Square... good times.
@Clouds095 I also find this song sad... but even though it's the common opinion, I somehow find Celes' theme sadder. But maybe it's because of the occasion where it plays.
Wow and I just finished listening to All that remains and now I'm listening to this song? Is it a bit wrong? :P. Naah This song I can listen at anytime. Very good song.
@Rusher4444 lol dude i just went from slayer, sepultura, death, possessed, dark angel and many fast songs from 240-300 bpm about death and then out of nowhere i come to here. thats the amazing magic of nubuo uematsu's music for games. other than heavy metal, i enjoy listening to uematsu's work. about 80% of all final fantasy songs i listen to all soundtracks of ff2,4,6,7 and all of them i like, best ff soundtrack constructed in my opinion.
@cmsasuke17 Yep. Absolutely right. My fav FF soundtracks are on FF2. FF4. FF5 and FF6. And I think Nobuo Uematsu's best work was on this game. Ever since I have played this game the first time. This song has been in my memory my whole life (including some other songs from this game) Too bad he doesn't make songs for the FF series anymore... As long as I enjoyed FFXIII and it's songs, These were the best FF games, and the music was just the best... FF isn't like what it was before...
I liked FF1-12, Enix game included. FF13 only a slight let down to me. But I don't think we will ever see a character driven game like FF6 again. That is to say, not by any company. This game is a master piece. We haven't seen a 3d adventure game surpass Ocarina of Time, and we haven't seen such amazing characters as FF6. Hard to make a master piece twice.
i miss this. such a great game, and they will never remake it because square doesnt know how to make good games anymore. this and many others will forever be loved classics.
Well this is strange. I'm writing a story and the quietest character is having a piece of his background shown, where his dad and brother are killed, and his mom, sister, and two little cousins get raped. And it's the anniversary, so he's remembering it all. This song totally fits it. And I've never even played this game, it's just in a music playlist I'm listening to to motivate myself. That's... kinda weird.
its soundtracks like this that help make some old school games memberable. the music it self can tell a story of its own. I remember when i heard this theme for the first time, i was touched and i can't say that about many games at all. FF6 is on of my all time favorite games
Goddamn, you know a game was brilliant with excellent music when it still makes you cry. This and Secret of Mana's banishment-talking-about-hero's-mother theme rate highest in all time sad RPG songs. Just how the strings enter at about a minute ... man. Poor Rachel ... name of my first ever girlfriend, too, hehe.
@kizzatta Well, I didn't like VIII that much since everyone except Squall did crap damage, and X was one of the best ones IMO. XIII wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be.
Locke had been searching the entire game (and part of his life) for some way to make things right. Even with the world ending, he searches to rectify a wrong with his first love. If this isn't a touching moment, I don't know what is.
What makes this piece even more sad is the back story to it. Most people remember Locke Cole as a thief and badass but like all of the FF6 characters his tragedy was that he was looking for a relic to revive his dead fiancee. No one knew about his story, and he'll continue to be the ultimate treasure hunter.
VI is way better that IX. IX was actually the beginning of the downfall of FF games. The greatest FF games are IV, VI, and VII. Argue all you want, this is the fact of the matter.
IV was sexist. X was good too, apart from the changing "Thank you" to the cliche "I love you" and the Tidus Yuna pairing. And no matter what anyone (especially haters) says, I love XIII too...expect Hope. He should being female and less whiney and annoying.
@kizzatta Years later, playing these games again, I really find VIII is under-appreciated. I like it more than VII now, which I generally think is given more credit than it's worth.
@MessyPaint I have to agree VIII is awesome. But X is awful, you're fooling yourselves. XIII is a spectacle of catastrophe from each unsatisfactory gameplay mechanic mistake to the overused cut scenes. Add in a boring story and you have Final Fantasy XIII: a game that should have been an April Fool's joke.
@kizzatta That's not the fact, but only your opinion.
All FFs were great, including FFX, FFX-2 was the beginning of the downfall actually and we gotta thank Enix for that.
Anyhow, everyone likes his own FF better. For me, it's FFVI, FFVII, FFIX and FFX are the best ones. I liked FFIV and VIII too. FFXII was not that bad after all.
FFXIII though, it was a disaster and now they release FFXIII-2 which is even worse!
Music like this is WHY I love Square...before they became what they are, I mean good music still and all but... Not like they used to. Oh well Square's RPGs will ALWAYS beat any shooter game out there :3
We need a remake of Final Fantasy VI.... forever rachel... cyan theme.... terra´s theme... locke... omg... "Coin Song"... Shadow theme... all great themes that i want to listen and feel them again in a remake. . . we need to pray!
oh final fantasy. how you have spawned so many memorable tunes over the last decade or so. i enjoy the epicness, the sorrows, the hopes and the realization that without music, the games produced by square(enix) would not have such great impact. this theme commemorating rachel for the ffvi soundtrack made me realize just how great nobuo uematsu's vision was and made me such a fan of video game bgms!
This is the game that got me into games period I keep playing hoping to relive that moment where my emotions feel so real my heart feels like it is crushed with the weight of the characters and all that I can do.... the least I could do is stay with them till the end
so many emotional scene in ff6.. locke losing rachel. setzer losing daryl, edgar sacrifice his freedom for his brother sabin, shadow and relm, gau and his father, cyan with his entire kingdom and family perish at the hand of kefka, celes and locke etc.. all are epic story
There is ALWAYS something in Final Fantasy music that brings out a feeling of melancholy or nostalgia. You just think of the happy days and memories gone by, all in the past. Feeling helpless, knowing you cant do anything about it. Yet at the same time, there is a ray of joy. I dont know how Nobuo Uematsu does this.
can't believe it's been that long since FFVI came out.. awesome song.
amazing how the music alone is able to convey all the emotions intended on that scene with Rachel. Rivaling other tear jerker scenes of even most recent games. Heck and this was during times without nexgen graphics or voice-acting.
This song has reminded me to never discredit the contributions of Nobuo Uematsu. I always considered him overrated because he's the only video game music composer (if any) that could possibly be considered mainstream, as in, people who don't listen to video game music know who he is. Although I don't consider him the greatest composer of all time, he's popular for a reason.
the gamer has change. new blood man, square needs to sell games, so now they have sold out. The Magic is forever gone. We are in the genre of the wii. =(
@skyfir3s The producer itself is convinced that what we are looking for is simply gameplay. I don't disagree entirely despite that being a terrible sentence.
What we are looking for is no less than story.
We are hungry for a good story, a game with a tragic and dramatic love story, starting with an adventure and developing into awesomeness in a world of phantasy and unknown magic. That is what final fantasy was, and owned at being. Now final fantasy is a whore like any other big name out there
@skyfir3s Ironically, the best JRPGs of this generation are on the Wii. Problem is, Nintendo of America and that incompetent fuck Howard Lincoln II, err, I mean Reggie Fils-Aime, won't release them in the U.S.
I just played through this game again recently. Though graphics, sound, and gameplay change with each passing year, great games will always be great games, and this is one of them.
Rachel is the sleeping girl in the basement of the northeastern most house in Kohlingen. This plays anytime you enter that room, I think. It also plays the night before the party sails with General Leo and Celes to find the espers near the end of the World of Balance half of the game.
No, it is only played when Locke revisits the memory and when you find Locke in the second half of the game. He'll take the party back to Kohlingen to revive Rachel. It's a very sad moment.
Rachel is the love of Locke's life. She fell and almost died and is held in stasis under the basement of a house. There's a quest involving her in the ruined world.
This is very well done, and yes, I think it is a sad song, though maybe not the saddest in video game history. Definitely one of the sadder ones from this game, along with Gau's theme...that one makes me think of being lonely and an outcast. Oh, and I appreciated the recent comments from SirGalahad86 (3 I think they are very poignent, and yes, I, as a 33-year-old man who has been through a lot already, can certainly relate.
This song embodies the very essence of love and loss which often go hand in hand...it brings back so many memories when I hear and always ends up leaving a heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach.
You cannot compare Locke and Celes to Cloud and TIfa. Locke and Celes had great character development, and there was almost none in FF7- it was all sacrificed for graphics!
Agreed. I couldn't get myself out of Midgar because I just didn't feel connected to the story in anyway but the rest of the world (save a few of us) says that FF7 was the Masterpiece and has seen the most spin off treatment of ANY other FF game to include a full feature length movie sequel to the game. If only they would make FF3/6 into a movie, even if it was straight to DVD. If it can hold the story together with some decent acting... EPIC!
FF7 was so huge because it wasn't crappy, but mostly because it would have been the first FF most people played, and it was something of a killer app for the PS.
This is the ultimate song of one man's regret. I'm sure we've all been through times when we wish we could have done more only to see things slip away...
Going through a situation like that now, so this song is very cathartic. I suppose it kind of lets me be aware of my feelings and not to bury them.
Sorry for the depressing comment, guys and gals. This Christmas was a bittersweet one for me...
@chaff5 I am so sorry. Life goes on though. Hey, if Locke could get through seeing his fiance die twice, you can get through this too. Not to detract from Locke, he is a great story character, and pretty decent in battle.
One of the greatest pieces in the entire game and no doubt one of the saddest. For those who did not know, you can hear a slower Locke's theme in Forever Rachel. A brilliant decision by Uematsu in tugging at the heartstrings of gamers everywhere.
I remember hearing this for the first time when I was twelve and I was floored with the quality. Now, at 22, the song remains one of the best in FFVI. Great work, Uematsu!
funny you mention that about Locke's theme, because this song was in my head in music theory class this morning, and I realized that exact thing. I then come on here to listen to the song and see someone mentioned it
I agree with everything you said. As a kid this was the first RPG I've ever gotten into. And now as an adult this still remains my favorite song in any final fantasy ever. And it TRUELY is amongst the saddest.
OMG I've never noticed that Locke's theme is the basis for Forever Rachel. Absolutely amazing by Uematus and great observation. I had to hum it to myself while playing Locke's theme to realize this.
I love this song, and its one of my favorites among all of the FF games... i accidentally killed Cid when i fed him a fish, and then the scene were Celes tried to kill herself played afterwards with this song, and it just makes me realize how amazing nobeu uematsu is at what he does. i hope one day i can be as good as he is.
I recently started an acoustic group that plays game music and this is one of the first tunes we worked on. What an excellent melancholy song in the midst of a game brimming over with strong music. The melody in this really pulls the heartstrings and the harmonies are just amazing. Uematsu really knows how to touch the emotions.
@BluBoulzor not to say i'm one of those kids who wants to jerk Sephiroth off but if you play the other games surrounding FF7, watch the movie, and read up a little about it, there's more to Sephiroth than you think. I will agree he isn't the greatest villian tho, Kefka certainly takes the cake on that.

oh final fantasy. how you have spawned so many memorable tunes over the last decade or so. i enjoy the epicness, the sorrows, the hopes and the realization that without music, the games produced by square(enix) would not have such great impact. this theme commemorating rachel for the ffvi soundtrack made me realize just how great nobuo uematsu's vision was and made me such a fan of video game bgms!

so many emotional scene in ff6.. locke losing rachel. setzer losing daryl, edgar sacrifice his freedom for his brother sabin, shadow and relm, gau and his father, cyan with his entire kingdom and family perish at the hand of kefka, celes and locke etc.. all are epic story

@meouby Agreed. This in Final Fantasy in my humble opinion, has the MOST Emotional story of all the Final Fantasy's

The world has only ONE best composer - Nobuo Uematsu! The saddest ost in the game for sure!
Detsurasu 1 year ago 2
There is ALWAYS something in Final Fantasy music that brings out a feeling of melancholy or nostalgia. You just think of the happy days and memories gone by, all in the past. Feeling helpless, knowing you cant do anything about it. Yet at the same time, there is a ray of joy. I dont know how Nobuo Uematsu does this.
Chichiri520 1 year ago 3
so sad.
hagu44 2 years ago
can't believe it's been that long since FFVI came out.. awesome song.
amazing how the music alone is able to convey all the emotions intended on that scene with Rachel. Rivaling other tear jerker scenes of even most recent games. Heck and this was during times without nexgen graphics or voice-acting.
prier 2 years ago 4
This song has reminded me to never discredit the contributions of Nobuo Uematsu. I always considered him overrated because he's the only video game music composer (if any) that could possibly be considered mainstream, as in, people who don't listen to video game music know who he is. Although I don't consider him the greatest composer of all time, he's popular for a reason.

I had a really weird dream about Locke and Rachel last night- I dreamt that he saved her. :( So sad.
evaperonfan 2 years ago 4
This is one of the most memorable tracks off ff6, which is saying a lot since the entire OST is nostlagia for me.
Just incredible, god bless you uematsu for giving us this gift of your music.

hmm.. why is it that Final fantasy 's quality begins to go down after IX ?
Now its all about gameplay and graphics, what the heck happened to that immersing story ?.. its just sad..

the gamer has change. new blood man, square needs to sell games, so now they have sold out. The Magic is forever gone. We are in the genre of the wii. =(

@skyfir3s Now, we are totally forever alone with good final fantasy.
RafaelSafo 11 months ago
@skyfir3s i agree unfortunately, they trying to appeal to new fans instead of giving their dedicated fans what they want ;/ sell outs
chapel66 11 months ago

When is this played? I don't recall hearing it before. And who's Rachel?
I've played this game, and must have gone deaf for a second.
And this is one of the best soundtracks ever made.
curtithird 2 years ago
Rachel is the sleeping girl in the basement of the northeastern most house in Kohlingen. This plays anytime you enter that room, I think. It also plays the night before the party sails with General Leo and Celes to find the espers near the end of the World of Balance half of the game.
guitarjew93 2 years ago
No, it is only played when Locke revisits the memory and when you find Locke in the second half of the game. He'll take the party back to Kohlingen to revive Rachel. It's a very sad moment.
MechWarrior894 2 years ago
Rachel is the love of Locke's life. She fell and almost died and is held in stasis under the basement of a house. There's a quest involving her in the ruined world.
gheldon 2 years ago
It plays after Celes's "suicide", too.

'Forever Rachel', FF6 (PS1, GBA, and SNES).
'Aeris' Death' is in FF7, not FF6, not only that, but the notes are different. Both are touching melodies none-the-less.
I am sorry if I offended anyone.

Composers tend to use things in a lot of their music. It's called a composer quote. They may do it to them-self of other composers that they like.

So if Celes is the original female Cloud and Lock the original male Tifa I guess that makes Rachel... oh snap
J3n50 2 years ago
You cannot compare Locke and Celes to Cloud and TIfa. Locke and Celes had great character development, and there was almost none in FF7- it was all sacrificed for graphics!

motionista 2 years ago
EPIC!
chaff5 2 years ago 3
FF7 was so huge because it wasn't crappy, but mostly because it would have been the first FF most people played, and it was something of a killer app for the PS.

This is the ultimate song of one man's regret. I'm sure we've all been through times when we wish we could have done more only to see things slip away...
Going through a situation like that now, so this song is very cathartic. I suppose it kind of lets me be aware of my feelings and not to bury them.
Sorry for the depressing comment, guys and gals. This Christmas was a bittersweet one for me...

I'm going through a terrible break up right now (gf of 5 years, 2 of those engaged) and this song is almost bringing me to tears.
I played FF3/6 as a kid and I always thought this song was very emotional and I felt a part of me in Locke. Even more so now.
chaff5 2 years ago

SirGalahad86 3 years ago
funny you mention that about Locke's theme, because this song was in my head in music theory class this morning, and I realized that exact thing. I then come on here to listen to the song and see someone mentioned it
boxcarguy07 3 years ago
I agree with everything you said. As a kid this was the first RPG I've ever gotten into. And now as an adult this still remains my favorite song in any final fantasy ever. And it TRUELY is amongst the saddest.
