  • im all for helping people, but why is their suffer worth less than ours? please tell me.

  • your doing it wrong!

  • Wow, that's amazing, if this continue they will be able to cure people with lesions on the marrow !

  • That rat needs an MP 40 and a Heer double decal combat helmet size 4 if he's going to go into battle.

  • NIMH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Walking is actually a reflex in the "lower" regions of the spinal cord. It is likely that the rats, after having been given those medications and being electrically stimulated, were able to walk because their "walking reflex" regions had been awakened; they were not necessarily walking voluntary. This is AWESOME; however, RIGHT NOW it seems to only be useful for walking. Perhaps later they can find ways to return voluntary muscle movements to quadriplegic individuals.

  • NIMH!

  • lol they make me laugh look how cute they are walking like that lol

  • Cruelty to rats. Pffft. I'm sure all you 'hippy douchebags' would rather have a close friend in your house whose paralysis was recently cured, than a fucking rat...

Yea, it's a shame it has to be done this way but the world and life doesn't puff out perfume and daisies out of a metaphorical asshole now, does it? It's for the greater good. The sooner you realise that, the sooner you become a rational thinking 'hippy' rather than a moronic, blind sided and illogical one.

  • can we do that with people,i know some one who could use that.

  • awesome lol

  • Woah wait a minute, if the spine is severed what controls the heart and the lungs?

  • @Dude1337jeeb , i don't know about lungs , but the heart got it own electrical circuit pulsing system

  • @0000000NoName0000000

No you need the brain for both, the brain regulates everything.

  • @Dude1337jeeb Not entirely. All the brain does is apply electrical impulses to your heart.

You can power a heart with a 9-volt if you wanted to.

  • But why not test on actual crippled humans, instead of crippling the innocent rats? They suffer, if you think suffering is a good thing you should offer yourself to be tested and make some money out of it. It is likely you will die a horrible death, like the hundreds of other dead rats they didn't show you in this video.

  • @PeterD2S lol shut the fuck you sad pathetic fucking hippie, its a few fucking rats you sad act and since you are clearly retarded i will eplain to you that the treatment used on these rats could damage a human even more wich is why it need's to be tested.

  • @oBLACKIECHANoo Nah. It's wrong and I am not a hippie, I am a human being.

  • @PeterD2S yes im a human been, a smart one, you are clearly not.

  • @PeterD2S your dumb.

  • @PeterD2S And I bet they never show you the hundreds of thousand if not millions that are killed in rat traps all over the world for thousands of years. Lolz why don't you fight the use of rat traps first.

  • i have pet rats, and i dont support the idea of the poor buggers suffering, but the fact that they were able to walk again with such ease is something i do support. this is definately useful to humans and an incredible advance in technology.

  • My Uncle lacked a spine throughout his entire marriage until he got divorced, but with drugs, and some stimulation (Hookers), he managed to get it back. But in all seriousness, I hope this helps out many paralyzed humans in the future.

  • i dont like the drugs but the drugs like me...

  • hahahaha i love it...m.m.

  • peolple wouldnt be saying cute little rats if they knew that the rat flea is what caused the bubonic plague (black death) there called VERMIN for a good reason lol!! but ah cute little rats lmao

  • cute little rats!

  • slashbanall.. what a load of bull.. there is no god man!! if there were then we wouldnt have to do any experiments we and every thing else, would be flawless pure and invincable. if what you are saying is correct about him being happy that we are experimenting to gain better knowledge of our reality. then surely all that means is that we are nothing but his experiments of him trying to gain more knowledge of his reality!!! im sorry to say this but when are people gonna stop beleiving in shite?

  • so what do you propose? we came from a slime billions and billions of yearrs ago? and by pure chance and accidents life came from that sludge?

  • no just that god is a bullshit theory!!! for people who beleive in fairy tales and fables. just to let you know smart ass lol slime is a complicated structure in that its a compound. every thing in the universe including your smart ass brain. come from two elements one is hydrogen and ive forgotten the other but what then crafted us and everything else is ultimately gravity. reactions inside the hearts of stars is what we and every thing was made from. people need to wise up and see the truth!!

  • lol you sound like youre 12...anyways the slime is actually the simplest life form you can get..if it were complex then you wouldnt need 4.2billion years to get to humans... talk about fairy tales evolution has more holes in its theory than ever. evolutionists cant even find a transitional fossil and its been over 170 years since darwin..evolutionists cant even explain how the eye came to be or how the flagellum either...can you explain this to me?

  • mr baxter stop sending me messages. ive said what ive got to say now fck off please. take care

  • "slime is actually the simplest life form you can get"

bold claim. is it based on any science or something you've just made up.

"can't even find transitional fossils .."

really? well In my reading and research, I've found that they HAVE found transitional fossils. I suggest you do some research on the subject you so confidently speak about. Also, quit learning about evolution from your church. Learn from Darwin, or anybody who is more qualified and knowledgeable than your church.

  • can you send me a link of this transitional fossil....im sure if it was fact it would be all over the news no?

  • yes, it was all over the news. unfortunately "Ida" turned out to be not a human ancestor at all, but an ancestor of lemurs. evolution is like a huge family tree spanning millions of years. we won't find every "missing link" because it is rare for conditions to preserve fossils.especially of human ancestry, due to the belief that we originated in the forest where scavengers, microbes, bacterium etc. would have left no remains. btw, every new fossil is a transitional fossil or "missing link"

  • hmmm actually youve got it wrong there are over a half a million fossils and none link one species to another species its never been found evolution is so impossible scientists and mathematicians actually have the probability of life happening by chance to be 0 or 1 in 10 to the power of 2000....even if there were 1billion per second combonations there still wouldnt be enough time on earth for this to happen bc only 10 to the power of 74 out of 10 to the power if 2000 is the time earth was here

  • and yet here we are. so what's that say for your probability. and btw your "1 and 10^2000th" odds don't jive with the probabilities that I've come across, but I'm willing to learn about where you got your info if you would send me a link.

  • Study on animals is well worth the benefit if it helps cure people, nature is much more cruel with no such benefits. There are obvious exceptions on the kind of animal as well as the purpose of the experiment. Its a fcuking rodent most likely bred for that exact purpose without the experiments they wouldn't exist. sounds a little like playing god doesn't it. None the less life is precious and fragile no matter the species such is life (We are just better at it)

  • Wow, I dont see any harm in testing animals whatsoever... I actually believe God would be happy that we are doing so, in order to gain knowledge of our reality -_-

  • the voice is irretating me!. and good job rats!! you help us humans!

  • Why are people saying "poor rats"?

They can walk again now! :D

And anyway, I think we can sacrifice some dozens of rats , so we can save paralyzed humans all over the world, yes?

  • rat brain looks like a vagina XD

  • It's ironic that most people who has commented like "poor rats" or "try this on humans" would actually scream when they saw a live rat at least. I would actually bet that they would start throwing things at it or even smash it. So, how much do you really care about these rats?

  • Comment removed

  • @VentoLT

    poor rats...

  • @VentoLT

Agree. Rats are parasites anyway, so if you want to apply human emotions to them and feel sorry for them, they owe us a great deal, their existence in fact.

  • me to. People cry for seals and dolphins but rats are somehow "inferior" I guess

  • Comment removed

  • If they dont do this how can they develop cure for your grand parents?

  • LOL wth is wrong with you guys, i smash rats just for the fact of getting inside of my damm house, and i'm pretty sure most of the people (at least the ones that care about the own health) do the same, now those guys are doing something that might help paralized people and you guys are like "oh poor rats", FFS, just STFU!

  • @TheKadeshi there's is just a poor way to not let u know that an experiment is going on an animal(which is illegal hauuahua)

  • @TheKadeshi die in fire

  • Jeśli chcielibyście oglądać polską telewizję przez internet, LOVEPOL oferuje stabilną platformę do oglądania polskich stacji telewizyjnych - bez anteny czy dekodera. Darmowy, 3-dniowy okres próbny. Polecamy! :)

  • this is really really fuckin bad tbh.. they sether the rats spine for tests :/ fuckin uncool....

  • @oWomenAreObjectso

they dont feel pain....so it reaaly doesnt matter...! people kill the crap out of rats..its worse to see them stuck on those disgusting traps! and suffer to death!

  • this is fantastic, i would love to see them work on this technology the thought of that being someday adapted to humans is amazing.

  • TAKE THAT GOD!

  • @FRIZZBI07 God: "Gee, I never thought of that."

  • why would anyone do this? Its not like that rat is gonna live for so much longer anyways.

  • the point is to transfer that science to humans

  • when will we need to make a rat walk again?

  • @KennyGJE

never! the point is to use it on us!! thats why people do these type of experiments...!

  • @KennyGJE

They're obviously testing on rats simply because they can't test on humans.

This could be used to help paralyzed humans walk again, or even dogs/cats.

    Stop being so ignorant.

  • I tought u would understand i was being ironic not ignorant

  • Please get a new narrator...

  • hahahahahahaha

those rats look like their having fun.

  • Nice!!!!

That will be a godsend to so many people!

  • @djteknovibe lol that was just awesome Roland rat FTW!

  • yey the rats are able to continue carrying harmful diseases thanks new technology

  • who knows maybe they will use this on humans..

  • yes ok you can feel sorry for the rats, but comone, TY GOD for rats! I mean, they are the reason we got so many awesome meds! we soon got a cure for aids becuase of those rats! its just plain awesome! torture 1 rat to save milions of people in the future? the rats are heros! if somone gave me the shoice to be tortured to save millions of lives, I would have done it!

  • Yeah I'd rather let us all die than to make the world more populated with cancer, I mean us humans. We are destroying our own habitat and while we are doing that we are also destroying other animals' habitat. Nature made a big mistake making humans able to reproduce so much with a huge life span.

  • @ObliviuxProductions

Nature made a mistake? You did not just say that.

  • Pretty spiffy....

  • she sounds special

  • Damn I know someday this will help but I feel bad for those rats because they broke they're spines on purpose and that's fuked up

  • i know its helping us but i feel sorry for the rats

  • If it makes you feel any better if the rats were in the wild they probably would face a violent death and be eaten by a hawk or other bird of prey.

  • @brittbo2006

The rats are able to walk again so its all good.

  • That rat on a treadmill made my day.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA LMFAO

  • on the atlantis topic if it just sunk below the sea why the hell haven't we found it yet? i'm pretty sure a satelite could pic it up and with all the subs? i doubt atlantis exsists and if it does why haven't we found it yet

  • ok cruel....but an army of marching rats would be great, I like their thinking, I too have considered finding ways of making animals march

  • This has nothing to do with making animals march, and more to do with treating paralyzed people.

  • Dont be absurd, never once did they mention humans or paralysed people, marching armies of animals is far more likely and, lets face it, useful.

  • thepigofhappiness, I like your way of thinking. When I was a kid, I would have loved to see rats march with 2 legs :D

  • ok

    you're either fucked up

    or 10 years old

  • wait, so they, broke the rats back or the rats back were already broken?

  • @iRawkBabyy They broke them for testing, and in a number of years humans will no longer be paralyzed.

Animal research accounts for 85% of all bio-medical science.

  • Thank you for posting a rational, intelligent comment. Finally someone that understands how beneficial animal research really is. Without it, we'd be 20 years behind schedule as far as finding cures are concerned.

  • Awesome!! Just what the world needs!! ROBO-RATS!!!

If we could employ millions of them to run on treadmills we could solve the worlds energy crisis!

    ok... maybe not.

  • So this means what? That using a combination of drugs, electrical signals and wireless networking I can hijack paralyzed people and make them dance?

  • I am a rat, and I endorse this.

  • there fucking rats people??? god most of you have put out spring loaded traps for these things... If a HUMAN can walk again because of this it is worth it.

Hell if I thought drowning a hundred of theses bastards in gasoline would save a human life I would be doing it right now.

  • so all harm humans have done to the planet is right , so we can overpopulate the world and do more harm to it? and in the long run destroy ourselves?

If there was intelligent beings in the universe that could visit it they would be hurting to look at our planet. People have such a primitive mindset these days. Back in the days of the Greek, Atlantis, Maya, Egyptians they were much more intelligent than we are now. Maybe not as resourceful, but than again they dint live thousands of years.

  • you know Atlantis never existed right?? I wish stupid people would just stay off the internet.....

  • your the one whos stupid calling someone stupid because you dont agree something never existed. :P

  • ok lets play a game called proving your stupid...... who was the first person to mention Atlantis? (this is a easy one that you will probably have to google anyway)

  • You're quite a fool if you think Atlantis is a hoax. There were accounts FAR before Plato which stated the existence of the "lost continent". Atlantis may not be what you think it might be, just a continent which sunk below the sea floor. You can't out rule the possibility that it didn't exist because even reputable scholars have a hard time doing so.

  • lol ...your lost continent could of been america lol ...who knows ...

  • Plato was the first to mention Atlantis. and the stories were never taken seriously in his time. further more... the world will not end in 2012, the . Egyptians didn't talk with aliens and Elvis is dead.

  • utter bullshit. You have no proof that atlantis doesnt exist or that the world will end in 2012 OR if egyptians "talked" to aliens. dont forget the nazca people who made a alien airport.

  • the thing is I need not disproove any thing you need to find proof and there is none

  • so why dont you just rid yourself of the earth since we are ''overpopulated'' like you said.....not so easy

  • lol yeah since the damn muslim don't stop fucking (8.1 child/familly) it's not going to be easy hehehe.

  • stfu you keyboard warrior i really don't think you would say that in front of a muslim so dont say it. You probably also call black people niggers behind their back you ignorant canadian.

  • it's all ready done and what i said is true ? and black people has nothing to do with anything ?? why bring them up ? anyway i really don't know why i shooted a comment like that on a paralyzed rat video ...must of been a response to someone here and youtube didn't do it's job AGAIN by showing it ...anyway adios

  • @Nivlac1982 Lmao ah life is cruel ;D

  • this had animal activism written all over it. i sincerely hope they find these rats paralyzed.

  • amazing.

  • yeah we like to abuse animals for the sake of humans, what a ill joke !

  • where is PETA when you need them?

probably taking semi-nude glamor shots of models again.

  • This video appears monstrous as it fails to explain what humanitarian protocols were taken to protect the subjects from pain (I mean, 10 minutes ago their spinal chords were severed? Wouldn't it hurt to exist after that?).

newscientistvideo you FAIL at public relations... which is REALLY REALLY BAD FOR SCIENCE!!!!

  • maybe they turned off their pain receptors, just saying

  • Wow it must have taken a ling time to find that many rats with spinal cord injuries to take part in the the trials. Poor little fellas, it must be all that skateboarding mice do today. I saw mice skateboarding in some movies recently and I thought, It will all end in tears. Looks like I was right, It's a good thing these scientists came up with this to help them.

  • @Saromatae Although your comment regarding using human spinal injuries for research has some merit.

I assume that the scientists studying this procedure want to dissect the rat afterwards to examine the site of the procedure.

This would not be possible in humans for decades.

To have gotten to a to a point where it seems obvious to move on to human subjects has no doubt required many previous animal studies, which it would not have been ethical to subject humans to.

  • I am pro-voluntary human testing, but not forced. I think that if a society is violating human rights to save human lives it is not a society whose lives are worth saving. I am totally for animal testing, and eating animals. The fact that humans have large brains (what makes us human) is partially based on increased protein from eating animals. Also, like the physicist said, "(If humans had not domesticated animals we would still be hunters and gatherers)."

  • i swear if i see a rat walking on my tread mill one day im going laugh

  • lamo

  • especialy if it says dont mind me im getting back in shape

  • This is sooooo cool!!!! So much potential for curing nasty diseases. Besides, the rat looks funny.

  • @outlawkelb

    oppose'

  • you people crying about the mice.... If you've ever killed a mosquito are as guilty as the next person... "That's Different!(blah blah blah) They carry diseases(blah Blah blah)". The mosquito is just as alive as a mouse and therefore just as important in the scheme of things. And another thing... What about animal meds? Are we supposed to test those on humans?

  • This narrator voice is unbearable

  • too bad that sentence doesn't make sense with that word. I think you're just making excuses

  • I meant the rat should be named as a leading contributor in the study.

  • Even though it breaks my heart to see this video, i know that this type of research is beneficial. This rat should be cited in the study, at least.

  • Poor rodents :(

  • you PETA fanboys are so foolish. Would you rather test it on humans? Grow some balls and stop feeling "sowwy" for the little mice. If you're so concerned about the animals well being, then these products should be tested on you. Also "conscience" is really spelled conscious you tard.

  • Actually conscience and conscious are two different words. One stops you doing bad things, the other is your awareness/wakefulness. But I won't call you a tard.

  • I failed to see the bright side of this video, now I see it.

This rat was saved from becoming some python's afternoon snack, and instead had his spine severed, and made to walk again standing upright eating treats all day.

    Its a miracle!

  • I certainly don't think they surfed the sewers looking for rats who had severed spines to heal, sorry to break it to you guys.

  • Some rats for thousands of people? Sure that seems like a 'moral' trade, but where do you draw the line?

1 tlife for a million lives?

    1 life for 100 lives?

    10 lives for 20 lives?

an innocent child's life for 2 adults?

Where do you YOU draw the line?

Is human morality ready for this line?

  • If it ever boiled down to 1 life, for 100 lives, or a 1 life for a million lives, that 1 life would have a say in it, trust me. Thats why people sign up for clinical trials for new drugs and new procedures.

  • What if it was completely up to you? You couldn't talk to that one person.

  • Its alot like being an organ donor, its your choice, you can die, and give your organs to research and save the life of someone else, but no one else can make you do it. I can't think of one time in my knowledge where one person was sacrificed for the lives of MANY, and that one person didn't have a say in it. Shit, even Jesus had a say in his death. He could have been like "Stfu" but instead he was like "=D"

  • can the rats control there own movements?

    or..

  • i'm pretty sure they can't for now, but they will

  • electrical nerve stimulation = electroacupunture

  • First I'm not certain they made the rats paralysed.

Even if they did its not free cruelty, its for a medical purpose. Every medicament was tested on something.

The food industry do worst anyway.

  • Poor rats...

  • I was thinking the same thing...but then if such experiments can lead to curing paralysis in humans it seems worth it-I'm sure the rats live short lives.

Think of the animals we eat, eventually they're killed and cut up to benefit us...its about as cruel.

  • This is cool, I'm going to take up skateboarding!

  • As an owner of 2 beautiful pet rats, it is sad to watch this. They really are great pets who bond with their owners and are the most intelligent of all rodents.

However, I am glad for research like this as it is invaluable to really improve the lives of hundreds of people.

  • Walking rat :o

  • It is a torture. And it is cruel. And it is extremely selfish. But we need to do that if we want to help members of our species and loved ones who are paralyzed.

  • poor little rat :(

  • to those who say this process is cruel: yeah, maybe these mice lose their life

but do you like chicken? beef? sashimi?

  • Yeah, they are scientists, they dont believe in karma or anything.Neither do I..but I hope they or their children pay for this cruelty to animals...

  • fool.

  • why should their children pay for it? they didn't to anything.

if you killed someone, should your children go to prison?

  • Hmmm I suppose it isnt pretty but the facts don't lie. This sort of thing has keep you, me, and everyone else, lucky enough to be born in a prosperous civilization, healthy. Which in turn we go off to get fat, drink and drive, snort things you can clean heavy rust away with, and die on our own accord. Amazing the human race is... Give it a few years and Ill take a stand with you when the smart ones dies off and the only expermints on rats is blenders for 1000000 5 star views on youtube.

  • I think I'm in love.

  • Nobody believes in nothing. Because someone doesn't believe in a god it doesn't make them evil...

  • omg i hope they take good care of those ratties or ima fly a plane into their lab!

  • You love rats? you should have a lot of them in your house then?

  • this is why we need a real life Rapture. So we can have these miraculous scientific breakthroughs without "OMG POOR MOUSE :(((((((((( SCIENCE ARE EVIL"

  • Hey look! It's Stuart Little recovering after a failed stunt!

  • Why did they dress him up like michael jackson?

  • If i was a rat id give myself up for medical experiments. Be honest with yourself...wouldnt yyyou?

  • Poor little mouse :(((

  • just because something is research doesnt mean its not cruel

  • Just because something is cruel does not mean it is wrong.

  • hahah was that a joke? of course cruelty is wrong.. i have no interest in arguging with you though... just think about what you said again haha

  • Lol.

  • look up the definition of cruel.. and tell me that it doesnt sound pretty wrong.. hahah idiot

  • Cruel; willfully or knowingly causing pain or distress to others

A surgeon knowingly causes his patients pain during procedures. This is not wrong.

Cruel: rigid; stern; strict; unrelentingly severe.

Good coaches and trainers are rigid; stern; strict; unrelentingly severe. This is not wrong.

Cruel: enjoying the pain or distress of others.

Enjoyment of certain things does not depict right or wrong.

    Idiot? Childish name-calling.

  • yeah but theyre not operating on the mice or rats for the rats benefits are they.. you idiot.. and theyre not training them for the animals/rodents better are they.. idiot!! hahaha.. im going travelling for 2 months.. so if you write back with something else just as thoughtless i wont be able to reply.. so dont think you won.. idiot lol
