You could use a sewing machine to attach the strap so that it wont come off...you would do this before you taped your two halves together.

Anything bigger than this bookbag would probably be considered a backpack. I'll be making a tutorial on that as well. To attach the straps so that they stay on you could use more pieces of tape and try distributing the weight over a wider area.

Duct tape is fairly water resistant so it should be ok if it gets a little wet. I wouldn't dunk it in a bucket of water or anything though.

Don't you think it'd allow more space if you gave it depth? instead of connecting the bottom with 1 piece, put 2 together and then connect it. so it'll have a ~2inch wide bottom too. So you could add more stuff.(you could do the same with the sides)

Giving it more depth would certainly make more space but my original goal was to just make a simple bookbag and not go all out with the duct tape.
