  • Great video. The footage is of excellent quality and you have done your research on this. It's good to know that some young people today still respect those brave souls who died for their respective countries.

As war veterans are known to say, the real heroes are the ones who don't come back home.

  • Beautiful video

  • god bless those brave englishman :(

  • Their names liveth forevermore. Have just returned from a tour of Normandy and the Somme. If anyone gets the chance, I recommend a visit to the memorial at Thiepval, where a staggering 73,357 missing men are listed on the biggest memorial to the missing and a very sobering sight. Thanks for a great video.

  • alot of this video is staged, as was a majority of the somme film, it was a large PR exercise by the government to hide the truth from the public to prevent a rebellion. like when they climb up the bank, thats completely staged it could've been filmed at anytime, its been proven that it was faked and if you dont believe me then think about how the cameraman would be in the position to film that? it's incredible how many people lost their lives and the government lied, sickening.

  • A whole generation of men died in that conflict had two great uncles brothers died at the somme

  • Thank you for this.

What a shitty thing. The French suffered terribly - their country blown to bits.

Saying that doesn't mean that I don't acknowledge the British losses. 20,000 dead in one day is hard to comprehend. It takes the breath out of me.

That a young man can struggle his entire life, to grow, to learn, to live, yet it all comes down to a bullet, a bomb, or a sniff of gas.

    What a waste.

My heart aches for those who gave it all.

  • wow...that was really good.

ill always think about what war is...

  • a precision Half of troops in Battle of the somme are french

  • thankyouu:)

  • what is the song used here?

  • good vid mate - lest we forget

  • french? BAH! although all the troops in the great war are heros it is the germans who have my respect although being the enemy, they fought on 2 fronts and had the hardest fight just like in world war 2

  • poor guys did not even make it over the top

  • I think people need to commend the French too, after all they suffered the second costliest battle of WWI, Verdun, which I think was bloodier and stupider than the Somme, thanks to French and United Kingdom troops the German were held in check. Russia, quit after getting its nose bloody.

  • I think the reason people remember the Somme more was becuase it was an allied offensive, as opposed to Verdun which was defensive. People just remember that thousands of young British (And some French as well) were sent over the top to die, while in Verdun it was the other way around. Plus the fact that the first day of the Somme (The day everyone remembers) was so bloody

I still can't get over just how catastrophic these battles were, and how many thousands of lives were lost over just miles.

  • very upsetting ive been there 4 times now and m only 15 wish more people my age paid the respect i do :(

  • Heartbreaking.

I saw a doco a while ago where the commentator got a Scotland Yard lip reader to read what the men were saying to each other before they went over the top.

To "listen" to these men was even more moving than watching them. The lip reader could even tell us what accent they were talking in and therefore the area they lived at home.

The people responsible for this carnage on both sides went unpunished, some of them should of been put to the wall.

    .

    .

  • What was the name of the documentary please?

  • My country wasn't involved in ww1 but this video brings me great sadness.

  • yes we americans did little anything yes we helped win and gave some good men but i believe (being an american and texan) that the brits are very brave and deserve alot of honor for what they did

  • whats the song title plz?

  • Pia Jesu from Andrew Loyd Weber's "Requim"

  • i went there for a school trip :)

  • 2:09 :(

He's Dead Before He Gets Over The Top.

  • On the very far left, yet another one dies right before going "over the top." Senseless massacre.

  • dam man without the canadian core that wouldve probably been a total different outcome there

  • whats the song used here?

  • lest we forget.....

  • i think the worst part of this battle was how the general was promoted

  • Yes the numbers of the dead and wounded where terrible but people do die in wars and General Haig did what he was surposed to do and that was to win, people blame him for what happened but no one ever gave him an alternative option. Any other General would have done the same, I'm not saying that what happened was good but he did defeat the greatest army at that time.

  • As I watch this I am struck by the complaints from my generation to do with the credit crunch. Can't afford a holiday to Spain. Can't afford an I-Phone. Tut! Tut! We don't know how lucky we are.

  • epic

  • Poor fellahs, RIP.

Thou shalt not forget thy sacrifice,

And beg the lord giveth thy some mercy.

  • Great vid!I am from serbia and our bloodiest battle is the Cer battle!40 000 Serbian soldiers died during the frist day! They were heroes!!!

  • The music,Pius Jesu, is just perfect

  • thats terrible music

  • music,Pius Jesu, was just perfect.

  • Estupendo,les felicito,sobre todo la musica es muy adecuada.Excelente trabajo.Adiós y saludos.

  • "Today we enjoy such freedoms, that in time we forget that men have died to win them.."

    -Franklin Delano Roosevelt

  • whats the song called playin thourgh the vid plzzzz any1

  • My Great Grandfather was here. He lost a leg but was lucky compared to some of the poor souls who didn't return. Bless them all.

  • What fantastic and poignant footage. The opera just about made me tear up. I guess we don't give the Brits enough recognition for their contribution to WW1. They were the only real stayers of the war from start to finish. Stalwart, they never faltered, but were true to the end, and won. God bless the British fallen and God save the Queen (HM EIIR).

  • It is sad so many young men had to die...

Great video, and very very moving... Thank you for posting..

  • It is sad that so many young men had to die...

Great video... Very moving... Thank you for posting..

  • thank you for posting.

  • it makes me proud to see our boys there

  • Honneur au courage des Poppies et Poilus tombés sur la Somme.Their sacrifice was our Liberté.

  • So much respect for these people.

  • The British people should never forget the sacrifice these chaps made in this battle.

  • just a second or 2 from the shovel bit they leave a wounded man on the floor who is shaking, much been terrible for him

  • I find world war one to be one of the most harrowing wars to read and learn about. Death tolls greater than that of even D-Day in WW2 were happening often and with the way it was fought most men really had little chance of survival, over the top, get to the enemy trench... what next. Visited the graveyards when I was in high school, and they send shivers down your spine. Grave after grave simply inscribed with "A Soldier of the Great War, Known Unto God".

  • such a shocking waste sending all those lads into that hell.

  • everybody should be made to go to tynecot and ypres so they can see for themselves how devastating this war was, i visited ypres last year and its something i will never forget

  • War is Horrible.

    Peace

  • Nice flower at the end what is it called.

  • they should've made concrete bunkers in their trenches and waited it out until the germans were stupid enough to charge, then mow em down.

  • R.I.P to those soldiers.

May God be with you all <3

  • They fought against because of orders, if there were no orders, that soldiers may be friends.

May the fallen soldiers rest in peace.

Srry for bad english, but i am german

  • australians are tough bruts.

  • 1:55-2:00. Haunting footage. Those guys are just a few minutes away from going over the top. Look at the fear in their eyes. Really got to me.

  • its so sad, the loss of life from both sides. the soldiers are the innocent ones, even the enemy soldiers

  • 0:32 .. The clergy always poke their nose in to wars, no matter whose side it is.

    Pure hypocrisy.

More useless than the generals were.

  • As long as there is man there will be war.

  • "We shall never forget", but we did.

  • are the trenches still there to this day where they were fighting?

  • Yes but the sand bags are stone, you can visit them.

  • with the coming of the morning and the setting of the sun we shall remember them, we shall remember them

  • I love watching old videos and looking at old photos. I collect old photos, especially tin-type, from estate sales and antique stores. I try to imagine what they were thinking and feeling back then at that moment. I'd love to be able to travel back in time. If you like the history of WW1, then visit the WW1 Liberty Memorial in Kansas City Missouri USA, its awesome!

  • Yes. That's Germans wars, not French, English, Polish (slave Russia, Germany and Austria; now free since 1989). We should never forget, that Germans did(I, II WW, SS, shoah, GG). I AM SORRY, BUT TRUE HURT!

  • during the filming of WW1 battles many were staged to seem more heroic to raise morale but the "trench rescue" at 2:19 is obviously real beacause of the realism that the guy being carried died despites the mans best efforts

  • 2:23 -In a documentary on Somme footage accuracy, nobody knew who the guy was in this segment so I'm not sure why the vid poster has comment about the soldier 'dying 30 mins. after reaching the trenches'.

  • its good that footage like this still survives does any1 know if there is footage from the argon forest my great grandfather fought there was gased by the germans but lived and had lung probloms for the rest of his life

  • The chap with the shovel at 2:36 is so fatigued he stumbles into his mate and apologises with a mutter and a touch to the brim of his helmet.

  • Actually, if you look closely you'll see that his hand is on his helmet before he's even regained his balance -- an instinctual reflex to keep it from falling off his head. If he were in fact giving him a "tip o' the hat" apology, don't you think he'd have turned to him to do it? He's facing in completely the opposite direction. I'm sure all soldiers were emotionally and physically fatigued quite a bit.... but look at the terrain he's on. He clearly just lost his footing in that muck.

  • poor guy

  • At 1:50 that Vickers is still smoking. The chap behind it, rests his head on one fist as if in weary dismay.

  • poor guy at 2:09 doesn't get to even stand up

  • they say if u didn't go over the top like ordered they'll kill you...i wonder if they killed him "/

  • Don't worry. That particular footage was faked. The two clips from 2:05 to 2:16 were filmed in an indoor studio, I 'think' in Canada. You can tell because they running into a fog which is used to hide the studio walls, and that they don't have their standard issue backpacks.

  • That scene was staged... But this happened all over the front on the first day. Men got hit before they even managed to climb over the parapet, falling back into the trenches.

  • TWO guys...look to the left of the screen.

  • No Surrender Rip

    Gone But never Forgotten

  • Maybe the Germans dont get a look in because they declared War on the French and Brits. I dont like the fact that anyone died, whether its Germans or Brits, but no sympathy comes to mind when I think of the huge advantage that the Germans had over the Brits and allies.

  • In trench warfare, no-one gets an advantage. Only the artillery rule.

Only one thing came out of the Great War that was good - the attitude that we have today towards war. In New Zealand there are still farmers who rarely show emotion or talk: behavioural leftovers picked up from their fathers' and grandfathers' manner after returning from the horror.

  • Marciano: Britain declared war on Germany. Germany was surrounded - if you look at the map - by the Allies of Britain, France and Russia and infinitely inferior in manpower.

  • great video;...thanks

  • Lest we forget, very moving footage..........

  • and yet the allies only advanced a grand total of 6 miles

  • i went to belguim to see all of this...its quite a sad place to know how many life were takeing... i realy cudnt believe it...

    its horrible

  • You did well then, considering it was fought in France.

  • wat country is the somme in?

  • The Somme is in the region of Picardy, France.

  • the guy with the man on his back is called Herbert Bridgen my great great great uncle or something like that.

  • my great grandfather tells me many stories, he served on the frontline for 2 years at various different places and fought at the somme. one of the most moving he ever told me, especily in the way he did. he said he and some soldiers came across a helpless german pilot near a downed plane who looked about 16 and he threw his gun away shouted some german whilst cryin hystericly abd beged and my grandfather put out his hand and smiled and let him go and he ran for at least a mile apprently.

  • good man =)

  • So tell me, why did we die..

We died `cause our fathers lied.

  • What is the background music from in "Battle of the Somme--Real Footage"? It was appropriately chosen and very pensive.

  • 20,000 dead in 1 day.

  • my great grandfather was in the trenches........60,000 dead in the first 2 hours one day.....madness

  • att he end it says "we shall never forget" well most people nowadays dnt know jackshit bout WWI or WWII...

  • my great great grandad died there they found him dead with his cap still on his head i still have that cap to this day

  • Excellent film. What a senseless and horrible waste the Great War was. The leaders of Europe should have been thrown in jail on both sides.

  • more specifically, the generals, Imcompitant arses, the whole lot of them!

  • a brilliant marriage of music and footage. Very moving. Very moving indeed

  • maybe those 4 years were the worst years of Europe ever...so terrible when you think of it

  • No more brothers war! Rest in peace. 14/88

  • at 2:21 which man died the one being carried or the one who was carrying the other?

watching these war videos makes you feel sick when you think what they went through

  • Honneur aux POPPIES et POILUS tombés sur la Somme pour notre Liberté ,to our Freedom.

  • it's terrible when you see the soldiers walking along wavin their hats at the camera no knowin that most of them would be dead before the end of the day

  • if someone wants U to fight a war, just say NO!

  • They will never be forgotten, most of these soldiers probably got shell shock. And that, is apparantly worst than death.

  • British, British not english same percentage of every other country in Britian killed aswell

  • garrvict is dumb amercians didnt fight in this battle and the germans never surrender it was an armistis not like ww2

  • Outstanding contribution. My grandfather died in this battle on Jul 8, 1916, without ever knowing his wife was about to give birth.

  • WW1 has always brought a big emotional effect on me, i had family on all sides in that war, and i dont know if any of you believe in past lives but i do believe i had a past life in this war

  • I 've visited the Somme, Verdun, Ypres, Vimmy, Albert Bapaume Road, Caribou Park, Aire Sur La Lys and most of where WWI battles took place. Saw what's left of the trenches and also military cemeteries. I imagined these brave men on those days. It is amazing actually seeing them in this video, although I've already seen these footage somewhere else.

  • whats the song playing called? can any1 tell me? its really beautiful.

  • This song is called Pie Jesu. Very beautiful. Have a look at the Aled JONES version or look at the you tube site for Britains Got Talent and have a look at a young bloke by the name of Andrew JOHNSTON. Very fitting. LEST WE FORGET.

  • pie jesu' - made popular by sarah brightman

  • it's called Pie Jesu.

I think this is the Sarah Brightman version

  • Pie Jesu. It's the Sarah Brightman version I think.

  • Pie Jesu

  • Good old English fought all the way to the end. Sometimes with no help from other countries god bles you

  • Hats off just to them? What about France? Their country suffered the most in the war.

  • Russia did.

  • The Brits deserve much respect. Not taking anything away from the French/Belgians/U.S. etc, but the UK really did the bulk of the grunt work throughout the hell that was WW1

  • I beg to differ from fellow American to fellow American. You should take the U.S. off that list in your comment. We really did nothing until the end. Our brothers to the North in Canada did more than anyone in the war which was a huge sacrifice. Like Vimy and Ypres with the poison gas. They pretty much got sent in to get slaughtered and won. Lest we forget.

  • Thank you... Your comment is much appreciated...

  • To chizble: Hey there mate, in a friendly tone, can we add Australia and New Zealand (the "Anzacs") to the British and Canadian contribution? Really admire your gracious comment acknowledging the Canadians there too mate. Kind regards.

  • Wow, that's sad as hell. Look at the lower left corner of the screen at 2:09, he didn't even get out of the trench before getting killed. His body just sunk right back in.

I think the trenches were possibly either more horrific than the D-Day Invasion or just the same. Every soul there should not be forgotten..

  • He wasnt killed ..i know u guys wouldnt believe this but my dads grandfather was on that scene were they all ran out of the trench..the man got and anxiety attack and count breath. so everyone told him to act dead for the time being.well that what my great grandfather told my dad anywaze,

  • My Great Grandfather was a rifleman in this battle. These brave men shall never be forgotten.

  • We Most to remember those braves soldiers from the world wide, who came to fought in French Land for Peace of the world and France! Thank you all USA England Canada............... RIP !

  • My grandfather fought there and also Ypres & Arras. These guys should never, ever be forgotten. True hero's ...RIP!

  • Ive been to the trenches these men actually fought in and stood by their graves on a school trip - it was scary to think of the men who had lost their lives right where i was standing

  • It's scary to think that a whole generation was lost there, the bravery of those guys was immense, 2:08 to 2:11 is very sad, one guy doesn't even get out of the trench.

All of those guys are heroes

  • Luckily for you that scene is staged, the men were wearing no packs that they would have carried their supplies in, and its in my school history book taken from a film. But of course this sort of thing happened every few minutes in World War One.

  • My great great uncle was the guy with the man on his back, he died later on.

  • real men

  • Pie Jesu translation: quite apt "Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy, You who take away the sins of the world; Grant them peace, Grant them peace. Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God, You who take away the sins of the world; Grant them peace, Grant them peace. Peace everlasting, everlasting."
  • "Pie Jesu" actually means "gentle Jesus".

  • the song wants to make u cry :(

  • and we shall never forget

  • the men at 2:02 are the warwickshire regiment god bless

  • My great grandfather was in the war, I don't know if it was this battle, but he was an American so later in the war. He won a purple heart for saving one of his allies from a gas attack.

  • What an incredible video. Never, ever forget these heroes.

  • We must not forget our brave vets who fought in ww1. My great grandfather fought in the battle of Belleau Wood. He saw his best friend from childhood get shot by a german machine gun. After the war my great Granfather paid for the trip his friend's parnets took to see thier son's grave back in europe. I hope someone makes a WW1 memorial in washington d.c. like the world war 2 one. WW1 vets have done so much yet we didn't give them the respect they deserved.

  • Its a shame that America hadn't come and ended WWI sooner though, but i guess open submarine warfare gave America the final push

  • Americans wouldnt of ended that war any sooner, it was a war of attrition.

  • not realy.. They entred the war becuase they lended a great deal of money to the french and britts.. and if france and England would loose the war, us would loose loads of money. Wich is why they entred the war.. with the coverup of the submarine war..

  • Yup have to protect your assets. #1 cause of war

  • the Americans wouldn't of ended the war sooner it the Americans just came in at the end and took all the credit it was the British French and Canadians who did all of the hard fighting

  • Argh this is what annoys me about certain Americans. So bloody ignorant, you come on a video about the Somme and spout crap like "Its a shame that America hadn't come and ended WWI sooner though" The Americans wouldn't have ended WW1 sooner. No one fought harder than our boys, may they never be forgotten.

  • If the men in the video, hadn't gone out think how our lives could be now, but still the bloody war shouldn't have happened in the first place. We should all be thankful, if you think about it 1 of those men could be your ancestors.

  • OMG..i hate war..war games are cool i think..but when you seee real movies you think "omg..why did we humans do this shit?? are our brain's shit?" when i see this mens smile in the trnches and eat...i must cry..they wanna be happy in this fucking wartime i hope they R.I.P

  • thanks to these boys,i now live in peace and tranquility,we owe them so much

  • There watched I for the Dead; but no ghost woke.

Each one whom Life exiled I named and called.

But they were all too far, or dumbed, or thralled,

And never one fared back to me or spoke.

    Wilfed Owen

    "The unreturning dead"

May all of them sleep in peace.

  • my great grandad was wounded on the somme and met my great grandmother who was a nurse while he was recovering, however when i went to Thiepval last year he was listed on the database as being KIA July 1916 which seriously confused me.

  • At the start when i saw the soldiers walking their it feld very emotional with the song but i couldnt help it but i lolled at 0:13 to the moped xD

  • same

  • Amazing this happened only 90 years and 5 days ago today.

    11/16/08

  • Honneur au courage! des "Poppies" et "Poilus" tombés à la bataille de la Somme.

    1918 / 2008,souvenons nous.

  • great video.

does anyone know what the song in this is called?

  • what a waste of humans lives. fock

  • I just recently found out that my great great uncle was in the Battle of Somme but was

    K I A on 3Oth of September 1916

R I P Uncle William I hope to visit your grave in day

He was one of the 7,408 New Zealanders killed or missing in action.

  • these are the best man and boys ever like omfg there was like some boys at the age og 15 in there. like 20,ooo gt killed on the first day.

if i was their i bet you i would had have shell shock. people got shot just for sticking thier heads out of the trenches by the germans. its sad :( poppies rule!:)

  • I just found out Yesterday that my gr8 Uncle wasin the battel of some but he died on 30th September 1916. R.I.P Uncle William.

  • Honoring and respecting, those braves English soldiers who fought in this battle.

    we will never forget them!

May they all Rest In PEACE...

  • God bless them

  • 30% of the brits casualties were before their own front line, terrible...

  • If it never happened the world would be different, you should be glad things happen because you don't know the other possibilities, they could be catastrophic.

  • All theese brave soldier in the World War 1 was heroes! My grandpa was pilot in france he died in 1917 :/

  • I read some very inaccurate things recently, like the Anglo-American did all the job and stuff.I will only recall a few facts about World War I.

    - 1,5 millions Frenchmen died during the Great War (for a population of 40 millions).

    - 27% of the young French males between 18 and 28 died during the war.

    - More than 80% of the frontline was held by the French army.

    - In 1918, during the last major offensive of the war, the French had more divisions involved than all of the other allies put together.

  • This is a video about the somme, the one battle which cost the most lives out of any army in one battle ( the somme for the british)

please respect this instead of being stating your facts. All armies did their part

  • Awesome, we are very lucky to live in "our" time. Though we as a nation are still at war all over the world - regardless of your political or religious views any man or woman that goes to war is a brave sole.

  • where do you get that kind odf footage?
