Charles Kavalovski was first a Ph. D. physicist, teaching at the university level and conducting research. He practiced horn on the side. He is simply amazing to have two careers at such high levels.
does anyone know why in some performances the orchestra is intentionally just behind the conductor? When I was at the festival hall in london last month they did it then, and it doesn't seem to make sense! this is a masterpiece btw :)
Some conductors like to stay ahead mainly to keep the strings up to speed whether they need it or not. In that case its best to watch the leader as watching a conductor that beats ahead is asking for trouble!
Great close up of the master conductor, the late Leonard Bernstein! He has been missed since his passing. I will treasure this wonderful video! And great close ups of the wonderful french hornists, too! What were the hornists name... including the horn soloist as played here? Please respond as quickly as you can!!!
The solo horn in this Charles Kavalovsky and on second horn is Harry Shapiro(2nd horn and former personnel manager BSO) who I studied with at Boston University. This is amazing intonation!
Great player, great performance, terrible audio recording

Oh wow, that's Lenny conducting the Red Sox. My childhood hero but all I knew was his time with the Yankees.

A Lewis. Seriously? Steve Lewis was probably in diapers when this was recorded.

No, its a lewis and it sounds a ton better than youe ver will. you win the principal job in boston and come back and say it sounds like crap

@bradhorn14
I don't think its a Lewis.. Most Lewis horns do not have that weirdly shaped 3rd Bb slide
i'd say its a Carl Geyer

I believe he played a geyer for most of his career.

I've watched a few videos of this solo on youtube and I thought the same thing.. why do they always seem late? lol
OYOBQ 3 years ago
the orchestra is responding to the rebound, not the point of ictus...is pretty common
