i think i'm one of the only people that likes the new met production better. granted, there are parts that are way too dark but i think i'm just really enamored with alice coote's hansel.
I was in this production (one of the children's chorus at the end) and it was hands down, the favorite of all of the children's chorus. That's Judith Blegen as Gretel, one of the sweetest people on the planet. Rosalind Elias played the Witch so brilliantly and had impeccable timing, so much so that you could clearly hear all the kids laughing in the audience.
How I miss this wonderful old production. The new, "Oh-so-hip" production, with it's rather perverse images takes all the wonderful and genuine sweetness from this great opera. The prayer and pantomime with the angels used to move me to tears. Too bad it's now history.
Beautiful Classic, gorgeous singing and so very accessible for children. The current tripe playing at the Met is a disgrace. Don't waste your money. Buy this DVD and wait for a new production that reflects what the composer intended.
Just a lovely opera! Far superior to most of them that are just fancy porn no truly civilized decent people watch, only the pretentious who fool only themselves, not the great God of Hansel & Gretal, Jesus Christ.
Would you happen to have the rest of this or know some1 on here on YouTube who does? It's a breath of fresh air to see such a beautiful traditional production!
This DVD is now available at -zonadecompras- (with 3 -w- at front and -com- at back, of course) Then, on -búsqueda avanzada- write -Thomas Fulton- and that's it .
Good news! DG reissues this performance on May 11. Looking forward to Flicka's farewell performances in opera - Hegge's Three Decembers at Chicago Opera Theatre followed by Despina (?) in Cosi at Ravinia this summer.
Metropolitan Opera - please nuke the godawful H&G production current on the boards and bring O'Hearn's beautiful fairy tale back to the stage. Everyone in this performance is having the time of their lives. The DVD is now impossible to find and second-hand copies are going for very high prices on Ebay and Amazon.

Who played the witch in this production?
klassicalkid90 5 months ago
@klassicalkid90 Rosalind Elias played the Witch in the 1982 cast. In earlier years, she played Hansel on the same stage!
