Thanks Lionel - very good comments there. One thing I didn't mention is that if you can't quite get it there with the osc trimmer and the local osc coil, you could then try lowering the IF by screwing the IF transformers in. But this assumes the receiver doesn't have a 455 kHz ceramic filter and you're only a few kHz off where you need to be on 160m.

4 - Try find a receiver with only the AM band not having to worry about other bands

5 - Older type receivers are generally better performers than some of the newer ones as some of them are harder to retune or lousy selective.

6- Best to tune up the receiver on a station transmitting on 160M in Melbourne VK3ASE usually come on 1865 at 10:30 PM on Sat nights or 11 AM Mon to Sat.

Very good demo from Peter and I will add a few more tips as I have retuned a lot of receivers to 160

1 - Turn the local osc capacitor to be completely out of mesh

2 - If your receiver is not quite on 160 m

You may have to turn some of the slugs but very careful as the ferrite slugs are very fragile so use a proper alignment tool not a screwdriver

3 - If you live in Melbourne tune the 2nd RX

to the Greek station on 1422 the local osc will be on 1877 Khz..

Fantastic porject.

I have an old broadcast radio that I was wondering what to do with this looks like a good project for next weekend.

Theres not much topband AM where I live so a BFO would be a must for me.

I guess you could also retune in the other direction for 500 KHz.
