  • SGM, Every time I try to install the Charging Handle Impingement, I successfully get a bolt-over.

    :)

Tried using the MDTS Carbine Malfunctions articles as a reference (youtube won't let me post the link here) Not a huge fan of most of the info in the document, but it tries to cover a multitude of malfunctions.

I'd love your feedback on the malfunction classifications and info therein… and how to PROPERLY install a charging handle impingement.

  • "...because you will NOT forget the name of this drill." I watched this video quite awhile back. While at the range a couple of weeks ago I had malfunction and, without thinking, I said, "three little kittens" instead of my usual expletive. LOL

BTW, I love my VTac sling! Keep up the good work!

  • Awesome drill.

  • This is an excellent drill! And something I might add to my classes, Thanks!

  • Buying practice rounds also are a really good idea, you can pick some up from Magpul's website.

  • You should tilt the weapon to check for the type of problem before pulling the charging handle to not worsen the situation, as well as I agree with Malik4Mazadu.

That little gizmo only costs couple bucks. Worth it.

  • How do you install each of these malfunctions ? Would love to be able to practice this on my own.

  • @badboyclub59901 Looks like we will need to make that video to show all of you how to get those malfunctions installed. We will work on it.

    Kyle

  • I like this drill a lot. Takes people out of their comfort zone. I'll remember this when I start teaching.

  • When in doubt, lock the bolt to the rear, strip the mag, run the bolt twice, and shake that motherfucker a couple of times if running the bolt doesn't clear it, then go from there. Great video, my brother. Great video, indeed.

  • This is good drill practice, actually its outstanding however you teach bad habits "tap rack bang", take a snoop and poop and find out how SEALs have adapted a remedy that is more efficient and timely.

  • @sgtleroym Thx for the feedback. Could you explain this technique a little more for us? If you mean to take a look at the malfunction, then that is what we teach, but for this particular drill we want the student to treat the drill as though they were shooting at night and can't see the malfunction.

If possible please let us know the technique.

    Thanks

    Kyle

  • finger bangin ftw. give that magwell the trident.

  • "Finger bangs it" lol

  • Comment removed

  • @TKDgeehun Absolutely, that is if there is light. If it is Dark , we need to be able to clear malfunctions. We try to train for the worst scenario, then deal with the daylight option. This technique works day, night, mittens..... Kyle

  • I'm no expert...but why not do a quick chamber check before troubleshooting? Like for example, if my gun fails to fire, I quick turn my gun over, check the chamber to identify the problem, and then trouble shoot?

  • rename it 4 little kittens and have 1 good rifle on the line.

  • these weapons are LWRC M6 ?

  • @blamsamblam87 ATPAIL Mil Nomenclature is PEQ-15

Check with TNVC, they carry these items.

  • Hey VT, what was the model of lazer on the end of the third rifle in this video?

  • Ak's don't jam :3

  • helllllla slow

  • he finger bangs it?!?!?!

  • I think this is actually called SPORTS if i am not mistaken.

Slap Pull Observe Release Tap Shoot its basic training stuff.

  • @Winstonlegthighs SPORTS won't fix those malfunctions. There's a reason they teach you it in -BASIC- training. Key word.

  • love the drill

  • Fingerbang? Lol that seems pretty offensive.

  • @xWYHxBaird I highly doubt they care.

  • @xWYHxBaird These guys make their living teaching lethal shooting techniques and tactics. For some reason I don't think they're the type to be bothered by sexual innuendo.

  • I like MagPul's way of clearing double feeds... They lock the bolt back before stripping the mag- So there's no pressure on the magazine/round...

  • @Malik4Mazadu That is a technique and the one taught by many military instructors. If you want to clear the weapon faster, ripping the magazine out, then locking the bolt to the rear is quicker. You already have your trigger finger near the magazine release so I just hit it. If you are using MagPuls little lever gizmo, then I would say go for it. Most of the folks I train do not have that modification on their weapon so this is a little quicker.

    Kyle

  • @VikingTactics I believe their point is, sometimes weaker arms(mine) may not be able strip the mag if it is locked too tightly. So they want to release the tension just in case it is too tight. Then there's no wasted movement of trying to strip it, failing, then locking the bolt back.

But I see your point. Most likely you can strip it first without issue.

  • @Malik4Mazadu Let's say you experience a failure to fire (click instead of a bang due to a bad primer) and you decide to do that highspeed Magpul technique of locking the bolt to the rear before you remove the magazine. But because it's raining cats and dogs and your gloves are muddy, the charging handle slips right out of your hand and you induce a different malfunction. Now, if you had removed the magazine in the first place... just a thought.

  • @VikingTactics For a civilian hunter, it is really irrelevant in how I or another hunter does this, but still. I also believe in the home defense role too. Where time is extremely important. So I still follow the current techniques in efficiency. I like your guys' demos better though. Maybe it's just the videos you post, but your guys' seem a tad more authentic. But then again, I haven't seen everything of MagPul's.

  • @VikingTactics its not really quicker then magpuls way, because u do a tap rack bang b4 you go into fixing the weapon. if u just took the little bit of time to look and see what the malfunction is, then it would make a lot more sense. and also i agree with malik, better to lock the bolt b4 hand. it just makes more sense.

  • @Malik4Mazadu I agree. I clear all my double feeds this way. Never had any issues.

  • @Malik4Mazadu What Kyle said was true I can back him up on that, i am currently serving in the Marines as a Infantry Riflemen and thats how we train to. We are taught to drop that mag first then lock the bolt back then finger fuck the round out.

  • while you attempting to fingerbang your m16 the bad guy with an ak unloaded 2 mags at you.

  • @loves2spooge319 good thing it was an AK so not a single round from those 2 magazines connected

  • haha. fingerbang that bitch to clear her shit.

  • Pro status

  • DOUBLE FINGER BANG!!!!

  • yuck this didn't go well...

  • Seriously, who is the one guy who didn't like this video? Probably Larry Vickers. LOL!

Just kidding, great vid guys. Thanks for putting the slow-mo and sub-titles in there so we could really see what was going on. Excellent touch.

  • the finger bang part is awesome, these drills are awesome. really appreciate all the video uploads man

  • Question: How does he pull the on the charging handle on the bolt override? I've had the bolt override before, but usually the stuck casing prevents me from pulling on the charging handle. I end up dropping the magazine and use the bottom lip to dig into the ejection port and pull the bolt back to get the problem casing out.

Are the rifles used in this video just different than the standard issue M16? Or am I missing something else?

    Great videos, btw. Very helpful.

    Proud to Be 11B

  • @hernandot3 The weapons I use are just like the standard M16/M4.

Pull the charging handle back as far as you can, it won’t go all the way. Once you get it as far as you can pull, push on the bolt catch to hold the bolt in place. Now push the charging handle back forward to create the space needed for the case to fall free. You may need to use gravity by lowering the muzzle. Make sure you keep holding the bolt catch, if not it will usually just let the bolt ride forward.

    Hope this helps.

    Kyle

  • @VikingTactics thx for the video. lol i had to fingerbang my ar15 today, and didnt even think to call it that!

when my round jammed, i pulled the charge handle back to try and force it in, but when i did that the bolt carrier snapped back and put a big dent in that round. so i say pull the handle back then LOOK and make sure the round is out of the way before releasing it. im new to these awesome guns so any advice would be helpful. thx again vikingtactics

  • @randallschecter Absolutely, the way I try to teach this is to feel that they fall out, or you may hear them, and of course, if you can see, take a look and make sure they have fallen out. Dented rounds can be a real bear to get out of the chamber sometimes when they become jammed by the bolt and carrier slamming forward.

Glad you like the videos. You should check out the Malfunction DVD, it goes farther in depth on all of the malfunctions.

    Kyle

  • @randallschecter note: when you need to fingerbang your AR make sure you turn it so the ejection port is facing down. This will allow you full penetration of the magwell instead of playing just the tip like the guy in the video, as well as using gravity to clear the obstruction. this is obviously only works for righties btw.

  • @pjconecrushernn ya, thanks for the tip

  • @VikingTactics I like AK47 polymer:)

  • @hernandot3 what infantry regiment are you in, just curious?

  • The tap rack bang first portion is a huge waste of time. If you would tilt your weapon, I.D. the problem and fix it the first time you'd be better off. Looking is so much quicker than blindly hitting your weapon for no reason, pulling the charging handle ( which can make some malfunctions worse ) and then continuing to attempt fire only to find out you didn't fix the problem.

  • @Thetacticalinformer How do you presume to ID your weapon bolt position in less-than-ideal light situation, or a no-light situation? It's not like everyone is rocking NVG monoculars, such as LEOs, or home defenders.

  • @Korruptor Tactile clearing my friend. There's a huge difference in feel in the 4 major malfunctions. Even through gloves.

  • @Thetacticalinformer

thank you. He's driving my crazy T R Bangin every time.

  • @theblackkknight1 I know man. The idea is an algorithm, or a process of elimination. But the flaw is it takes too long, and it's way too much detail when if we can learn to use what we have ( senses ) to I.D. the problem, and problem solve we can overcome this ridiculousness.

  • Kyle, is there any way you can post a description or a video of how to set up each malfunction. I know how to do the double feed with a backwards casing but I am not familiar with setting up the other ones. Thanks for all the videos.

  • @easy09day We just produced a Malfunction DVD that is available on our web site that covers this information. Should explain all the malfunction installations.

Let me know if you need more help.

    Kyle

  • AK47 because kittens are just silly when you can have a lion.

  • Excellent!, very instructional. In the part of the world where I'm training soldiers and Marines the only changed I will make is, not to drop the magazine on the sand, but to place it behind their knee, while fixing the issue. Thanks for the video.

  • he finger-banged his gun. im gunna flag. lol i had never heard of that tho, thanx for putn up these vids, im new to shootin and i wanna b in swat wen i get old enough and after iv been on the police force long enough. again thanx and keep it up.(ps i love your products and am gunna outfit my ar with a fair ammount of them)

  • Outstanding. This is up there with Clint Smith's pistol malfunction clearing drills. Touching each set of skills in one compressed evolution.

  • Excelent demonstration video! Thanks

I know the G36 is not really common, but maybe there´s a chance to make a basic video about the weapon ´s malfunction manipulationsadaptet to the G36?!

  • How common are these three types of malfunction?

  • @TaZ101SAGA Double Feed is very common. The other two not as much but we do see them every now and then.

    Kyle

  • @VikingTactics Noticed one thing in clearing double feed, dunno it has mentioned in comments yet. Double feed is often caused by bad mag. This means that the shooter should not use the same magazine again. Instead he should take a new magazine from his gear if available.

    Good video and great exercise.

  • Kyle,

Why do I need to cycle my weapon "twice" and not just one time? If there's a round in the chamber won't it extract after one cycle of the charging handle? I attended a week with Rob T. a while ago and we used this drill. It is the best malfunction drill I've seen, but I was on the shitter earlier after watching this and pondering how to make this faster.

    Thanks,

    MG

  • You should demonstrate this with an AK.... oh wait............

  • what would cause these malfunctions?

  • I kept telling everyone i knew since back in high school that finger-banging is important! But who listened?

  • the FB(finger bang) classic move learned in nam.

  • haha fingerbang that ar!

  • Quick question Mr. Lamb. I just got my new ar15 and I can't seat the magazine with the bolt closed. But if I download one or two rounds, I can then seat the mag then pull the charging handle to charge the gun. I remember in your book you mention that you like to charge the gun by locking back the bolt first then insert mag and let the bolt ride forward. It definitely worked for me. Can you elaborate why the latter method works and the first one doesn't? Thanks.

  • @yenhan705eh77 Make sure you only have 30, not 31. I normally don’t lock the bolt to the rear to load although that is a fine way to make the initial load. You must be able to load the mags with the bolt forward such as during a tactical reload. See how many rounds are in the mag.

    Kyle

  • what kind of forends are on those rifles?

  • @YOWHATTHEHELLUP71 Those are VTAC Extreme tubes.

    Kyle

  • @VikingTactics you guys have about $165.00 + shipping coming your way.

  • now me question is.. how do you create the first 2 malfs?? also would it be best to close the dust cover?? just so when the operator picks up the rifle he wont be able to identify the malf right away? Great drill btw!

  • @pingpong909 Bolt override- pull bolt to rear and lock it, push charging handle forward. Drop a piece of brass in the charging handle channel and release bolt.

Charging handle impingement- Same as above but place brass between bolt face and hook on the charging handle. Takes some practice.

Dust covers closed will definitely screw your buddies, but isn’t the way the weapon will be when you have some of the malfunctions. You can lay weapon down on dust cover side, or do the drill at night.

  • "...it sounds goofy and it offends a lot of you tactical guys out there."

    HA! That's great!

  • Gooood luke

  • He is professional!

  • if all else fails draw your sword

  • Thumbs up just for saying "finger bang the mag well" Ha Ha!!!

  • Just wondering why on the double feed malfunction he didn't lock the bolt then rip the mag out?

  • @jeff31b

My experience is that you are much quicker to pull the magazine out while your hand is there to get a hold of it. I switch hands to lock the bolt to the rear, therefore it is slower for me to switch, then switch back to pull the magazine out.

What is the malfunction that is fixed by locking the bolt to the rear first, then removing the magazine? Just trying to use economy of motion.

    Kyle

  • Wouldn't the extra pressure from the bolt essentially "wedge" the magazine in place due to the round only being partially stripped from the magazine?

I've always been taught to relieve the extra pressure the bolt is adding to the rounds that are already jammed up by locking the bolt to the rear.

However, in practice, it does seem that give the magazine a good SOLID tug will usually rip it free.

    Great vids.

  • @opmike343: I teach that way b/c I want to use one technique for all. If you strip the mag, then attempt to lock the bolt to the rear it will have the same effect and is usually faster. With a Bolt Over Ride or Charging handle impingement the bolt won't lock to the rear so it is much quicker to rip the mag, attempt to lock the bolt, slap the charging handle forward, point the muzzle down to allow gravity to pull the bolt override out and then cycle twice before loading again.

    Kyle

  • @VikingTactics I wanted to shoot you a quick message saying thanks for answering all the questions that people ask you. Alot of instructors mainly ignore their student body. It does not go unnoticed. Even if it's only one normal joe say thanks, hope you know it's appreciated. Take it easy.

  • @trojanmike2008 Glad we can help.

    Kyle

  • What exactly is a bolt over-ride and charging handle impingement?

  • Asnmonkey6969,

Bolt over ride is when the bolt has overridden a spent or live cartridge and it is stuck between the back of the charging handle and the front of the bolt carrier. Charging handle impingement is when you have a similar circumstance but the cartridge is between the front of the bolt and the back of the charging handle.

We will have a good DVD of these procedures coming out soon. It will go more indepth than the You Tube Videos.

    Kyle

  • Amazing video as usual. I NEVER get tired of watching your videos and I always pick something up to share with co-workers and friends. Thanks for your time.

  • Great video. I was just wondering why that after the malfunction was cleared the same magazine was reinserted when the magazine is often the cause of the malf.

Was the same magazine used just for the purposes of this drill or for some other reson?

  • 1341USMC

The same magazine was used because we supply the mess for the shooter. We make them fight through with what they have. We do teach to always put in a fresh magazine if possible. We also teach to set the magazine by your knee so after fixing the malfunction the shooter can quickly recover their magazine to be placed in a dump pouch or pocket.

    Glad you like the videos.

    Kyle

  • I don't understand why you would immediately tap, rack, bang if you don't feel that click. Wouldn't it be better to once you pull that trigger and you feel nothing to check the chamber first and ID your problem that way your not facilitating the problem more by going into a tap, rack, bang?

  • tap rack bang isnt going to make the problem any worse, you dont have to worry about that. what you do have to worry about is spending too much time out of the fight because your gun is jammed.

  • DMJERRY

One of the issues we run into is that you cant see what the issue is. We train for all malfunctions to be fixed at night - when you wont be able to see what the issue is. If you dont get a click, it could be that the round did not go all the way into battery, or that a round failed to feed properly, and may be fixed with a tap rack.

    (continued...)

  • We try to keep things simple: immediate action and remedial action. If you have a stove pipe and you conduct immediate action, you will induce a worse malfunction, but how will you know that, at night, until you conduct immediate action?

Let me know your thoughts on this, I am always willing to learn.

    Kyle

  • I understand. That makes sense. Train for worse case scenario. Thanks for taking the time.

  • I can attest to this during the Viking Tactics Night Fighter Class last Nov (Great class).

During the support side-only exercise, I induced a stovepipe when I accidentally blocked the ejection port with my knee.

I applied immediate acton and induced an even worse malfunction. Remedial action requires time to execute and is specific. Immediate action addresses most of the malfunctions.

In the end I had to use my teeth and the a magazine to clear the rifle and continue with the fight.

  • @VikingTactics

Kyle, 99% of the time, a FTF will give you a click of the hammer falling. All others you get the "ghost" trigger" because the stoppage is preventing the carrier of getting far enough forward to let the hammer drop. But if you are training guys on the 100% with zero visibility for any possible stoppages and malfs, I see where your going.

  • HEY! At no point did you ever say whack the fwd assist several times THANK GOD!!!

  • The objective of VTAC's training is to provide you with the knowledge and tactics to survive a gunfight....not a 3 gun match. You must put effective fire into a threat no matter the situation or the environment you are in. A DEAD threat gives you the best chance of surviving an engagement. Don't get me wrong, I love to shoot both for recreation and when it will save your life, but in the mind of Kyle and his staff, the M4 is a weapon. Neutralize the threat. My two cents.

  • kyle- when the dvd come out brother--- think about it!!!

  • Awesome video. I love them. I can't wait until you swing out here again so I can goto your class.

  • Rilfle, weapon who gives a shit. I call rifles, "weapon systems". I could care less what its called. In these vids they are calling it that because they want to. I don't think anyone really cares what the legal term is. call it what you want to, We aren't in court.

  • Great job guys!!

Your class discussion on malfunctions and this drill to reinforce the discussion is outstanding. Keep up the great work and keep the teaser videos coming.

  • Excellent video as always MSG Lamb. Thanks for continuing to dispel the crap the drama web regurgitates. - Kelly

  • Lmao @ Fingerbang

  • It is all semantics. Who cares whether it was called a weapon, firearm, rifle or blaster. Did you learn something?

  • Another great video, keep it up Kyle.

  • Thanks for the video Mr Lamb they're are appreciated.....

  • this is where a Magpul B.A.D. comes in handy

  • Jesus.......for a gun enthusiast you sure are sentimental, who cares what he calls it. Even if he called it a rifle, the fact remains it is a weapon.

  • YOU are the weapon, the gun is merely a tool.

  • OH! my bad, I was always taught "one mind any weapon" in USMC School of infantry. But you are right. thay din't know shit.

  • A knife is a weapon, but also a tool. A rifle is a weapon and also a tool. Multi-purpose stuff rules!

  • And in some cases, the person is also a tool.

  • It's still a weapon. Suggest you stop trying to cater to the anti's and embrace what a rifle is. They don't care if you called it a cuddle stick. They don't like them.

  • Yeah, an assault rifle is a weapon. Sorry. Weapons are things that are designed to hurt. They have been made for that reason since cavemen were making spears in caves.

  • wow. stop being so petty. how old are u 12? when u make ur own vid u can call it what ever u want. it doesnt really matter right now

  • @thehammerglock17 enough of your diluted PC lawyer logic. its a god damn weapon. the guns creation was first intended as a weapon. to kill people.

  • @thehammerglock17 if you haven't served in the military or law enforcement, you don't qualify to have an opinion. Shut up, and let the professionals teach.
