  • Who is watching this for their English GCSE?

  • TheMapleAce, I've heard the term GCSE on BBC Radio at least 20 times. No one has ever explained what it means.

    I'm guessing it's a college entrance exam.

Since you haven't read the book, I suppose you won't do so well, but good luck anyway.

  • favorite version :D

  • Hi Guys! DO you any sites where I can have this downloaded?

    PLs Help!

  • Cinematography - breathtaking.

    Music - IS Tess.

Justine - natural and fits Hardy's creation perfectly. What an actress! (Portrayed an amazing Natalie Wood - a must see)

  • Crap this is so long. 21 parts. :O

  • I love Hardy's clever use of allusions in the book. It is what makes the story so remarkable!

  • appreciate the upload this helps me understand the book more

  • This Justine really did justice to her role of Tess.. Beautiful Actress..!!

  • Thank you for uploading this.

  • I have not had the pleasure of reading this yet but, is it supposed to be Sunday?

That would explain why they are wearing all white frocks and dancing so merrily lol.

Or maybe if not it is just for uniformity's sake because visually it looks splendid.

  • @librermonami It's May Day, a fertility ritual. We got the maypole from it.

  • I find it funny how this is 'girly' when a man wrote this story.

anything with feelings is somehow feminist

  • @lovellae Very true, apparently when Hardy was writing it he was truly melancholy and in love with Tess as if she was real that he had created.

Wish she had a more favourable ending though.

  • @OurManInMarrakessh

But hardy ending this piece in a tragedy was the most effective way i think

  • @lovellae - Tragicly yes.

  • @OurManInMarrakessh Very common for writers to fall in love with their characters. :) lol

  • isn't she the most lovely woman on earth?

  • i was named after this character :) im so glad i found this. ive always wanted to read my namesake's story but i could never get a hold of the book!!!

  • Aww, who could have possibly resisted Tess at 4.43 in the film as a dancing partner?

Just love Justine's little dreamy smile at 6.03, lovely looking girl.

  • Poor Angel trying to select one girl from a bevy of beauts, the trials, the trials.

  • The best version of Tess of the D'urbervilles by far, and Justine was the best Tess also.

I dont know what they were playing at in the 79 version, and the 08 version was a bit dark but this version catches the essence of the book. Very well acted and lovely soundtrack.

  • nice dancing ......looks like a lot of fun

  • I love the 2008 more because of the actress in it.. Im biased so theres that.. I do like parts of this a lot.. like someone said.. if only we could pick and choose..

  • I love her hair.

  • oh and if any 1 knows where i could get it from....could u please send me a message. thanks x

  • i have been looking for this version for years!! i use to love this video wen i was little....everytime i cum home from school i watched it insted ov my kiddy programms!

been trying to find the video everywhere, but sum1 taped over it! does any 1 no how i could get it agen?! please? xx

  • this for me has so much more energy than the new bbc version

  • the actress who plays tess is so pretty!

  • angel's brothers seem like total fags

  • marvelous..thank you for uploading!! there was also a play with Robert Patz...u know abt that?

  • Great version...!

  • @LjimaeStarr I mean this Justin Waddel version=D

  • This beginning scene is perfect... the music, Tess and Angel are all perfect.

  • OMG I LOVE THIS CLASSIC THOMAS HARDY NOVEL. why does he write such depressing material =(

  • I find this version much more superior in dramatisation than the 2008 version. I'm glad i'm not the only the only one who thinks so. The musical score is lovely too

  • @limbumog Me too, but there are definitely some parts of the 2008 one that i'd add to this one, and vice versa! If only we could pick and choose :(

  • @limbumog

it is sad that this version deletes so many scenes,

  • @limbumog But Tess in 2009 is more beautiful (Gemma Arterton)

  • @san77icognr1 im sorry i think justine is more beautiful :)

  • This book highlights the wickedness of Christianity that has impacted England during the Victorian era and still greatly influences the US as well.

  • Christianity has been wicked most of the time.

  • fuck you. and your ancestors. pussy face.

  • How very unchristian of you.

  • so? you have a problem? who said christians cant be thugs?

  • So there's no reason to get taught by a thug.

  • did i say i WAS A THUG? i mearly said that christians CAN BE thugs too. please in this case, work on your language. it is VERY irritating to not know how to interprete english and start to find loopholes and fluant here.

  • I think I know the meaning of fuck you...and unrestrained anger is a sin. So if you still pretend to be Christian you must be a bad Christian, ergo rather a thug than anybody else. It was you who said that. (Isn't it spelled "merely"?)

  • I supervise a book club at my highschool and this story seemed to resonate with many students. Males who participated in the discussion felt compelled to sympathize with Tess. This is truly a poignant novel. To some extendthere are indisputable parallels between Tess of the D'urbervilles and the novel Clarissa.

  • I couldn't decide who was worse, Alec or Angel. Angel was such a hypocrite. Alec was a scoundrel, but you can see he was also suffering from urequited love and kept trying to win her over.

  • Thanks so much for uploading this!! Tell your dad this was written by a man, so it's not girly! Try the Roman Polanski version the movie "Tess". It's super beautiful too.

  • Indeed, written by Thomas Hardy. Marvellous writer

  • thank you thank you so much for uploading this! i love this version, and Justine is the wonderful talented actress.

  • Good film, great great Novel. Hardy is genius.

The girl who plays Tess in this is fantastic, just how I imagined Tess.

  • thank you so much for uploading this. i love this version of tess :)

  • Thx for uploading- I love the look Tess gives Angel as he leaves. "why didn't you dance?"

  • Wonderful!! :-)

  • Justine Waddell is such a magnificent actress! :-)

  • thanks for uploading this:))))
