This is hands down Brosnan's best Bond film, and in my top 3 of best Bond films.
Great villian (Sean Bean as 006) with a good motive, great kickass take-no-shit Bond Girl in Natalya, and Brosnan was great. It kind of went downhill for Brosnan after this one, I guess he couldn't top GoldenEye.
I personally hate the new "touchy feely" Bond they're going for these days, yet it worked in this movie. I think it's because Pierce Brosnan had a really good opposite in Sean Bean for the dynamic to play off of.
This movie corresponds with special and wonderful time in my life. Junior in high school. Dating my first real girlfriend. Bond fan for years, but this was the first time in 6 years (a long time if you're 17) I got to see a Bond movie on the big screen. I ate up all the build up and media hype. I was a full blown Bond geek. And WHAT A MOVIE! This is exactly what a Bond movie needs to be. Down to the last detail. I will always treasure my memories of this movie and remember those days fondly.
i remember all the excitment when pierce became the new bond and this film and the n64 game were both epic! the living daylights is my favorite film but this is second!
its cool the way both films have a conflict between bond and the soviet union and the soundtracks for both films are unreal! i think dalton and pierce are very good actors and both give u the impression bond is real unlike in older bonds were
If I could pick one girl for Bond to fall in love with, Vesper doesn't do it for me. Natalya does! I felt so cheated they discarded her after 'GoldenEye.' I thought Izabella and Pierce had good chemistry. The rest of the Bond girls always fell short in some way. Natalya was well-written, compassionate, and independent.
Agreed. If I wanted to see Denise Richards, I'd watch Wild Things. Don't insult my intelligence by casting her as a nuclear physicist. Izabella is hot as hell but her character makes sense and she plays it well.
@Malumbrus She's the only one that feels like a real person in the four Brosnan Bonds. The other "good" Bond girls feel like a couple of conceptual taglines or word balloons, and the actresses playing them can't even live up to the bullet points.
I was embarrassed by Halle Berry and Denise Richards. Horrible, unbelievable.
Izabella was the only Brosnan sidekick that I liked. That is, liked watching. That felt capable and compelling in her own right.
@MicheasTheMighty Kind of agree. The problem is the Bond Formula, which wouldn't allow for any implication of a monogamy from Bond.
If they wanted to rework the character for the 90s, that might have been an interesting angle.
Regardless, a bigger problem with the other Brosnan films is tone. Even the scores reflect that. So dull. Trying too hard to be reverent and referential of the past. Worst type of post-modern trash.
And casting. Ugh. Teri Hatcher?! Denise Richards as a ROCKET scientist!
@MicheasTheMighty And the idea of Bond falling in love with a Russian, with this as an ongoing piece of thematic and narrative structure would have been a good carry-over and throughline of what GoldenEye was trying to accomplish.
Unfortunately, everything, outside market rate, that this film accomplished as far as revitalizing and updating the character for its time was thrown away in the proceeding Bonds.
They have no continuity, and over three films less character dev than Goldeneye alone.
@MicheasTheMighty You're right...but you cant have the same Bond girl in two movies. It's not in Bond's nature to settle down, and he's a one man team. Thats how it is.
Best Bond movie.

Goldeneye is the best Bond film. Best Bond, best villain, best Bond girls, best locations, best soundtrack, best story. What more could you ask for?

The best of all Bonds!!! I always love it when the following appears at the end of the credits... "JAMES BOND WILL RETURN"

You know, this should've been nominated for a grammy, if not Best Original Song at the Oscars.

When you think this song was actually written for 'Leon the professional' it suddenly works so much better as a song

They cast names in the others. Pity.
