yea i was looking in my tank and i noticed that one of the females has gotten really colorfull and has stripes now and is chasing the other female around and the male was fighting with the colorfull female...their the only fish in my tank besides the pleco
The "colorful female" is not a female! It was a juvenile male (which explains the female coloration) but when it grew up, it got its male coloration :) so basically, you have 2 males and one females.
Try changing your water more frequently. Clean water seems to stimulate them to spawn. Also, they tend to spawn only when they feel safe. So if your tank is overly crowded or the fish you want to spawn isn't dominating, then there's little chance.
hey man i was woundering if you can help me i have key hole cichlids and female layed her eggs now they are in her mouth turnig into fry! should i let nature take care or pull her out and remove the fry from her mouth?reason im asking is cos i dont have just cichlids in my tank! i have salmons, angel, sharks , mollys
@geeimatree1 then put a grown female and male in a aquarium with a stone cuz they paste there eggs to it and remove as soon as the eggs are there cuz they eat there own babys.
Yes I just had a female die, she got too weak and was an easy target holding the babies. The male, I think, and I really don't know if this is ever the case, is too young to do his job... he just dances infront of a bunch of the fish in the tank.

No! LEAVE THE EGGS IN HER MOUTH! It's apart of the ritual! and if you don't have a male one, then...yeah you get the point...

Mine are starting to do this as well... though I think they are still wayyy too small to be mating.
octoalex 5 years ago
My mbunas always start mating about 2 inches long. Though I think females are much more successful in holding fry when they are bigger.

A male can dance in front of other males too...and that is a sign of aggression, not affection ;)
