  • Giant steps? Man that's awesome...tough nut to crack.

  • please let me meet this guy and be his apprentice!!! ugggggggggh.

  • Man u just made me fall back in love with my bass bro.

  • Omg I went crazy when he broke into giant steps ( if u don't know what that is u seriously need to take a gospel brake and listen to some jazz)....INSANE BRO INSANE!!!!??

  • At 5:09 when he starts talking about the open hammer pluck thing, what is the order of slapping the one string? Slap > Hammer >Slap >Pop?

  • If anyone here knows Dale, tell him the 2-5-1 (with the flat 9s) changed my life

    Wayman Tisdale

  • 1:22 my dude KILLED GIANT STEPS ! Wow ! that man is awesome !

  • ur bass says ouch.

    Yer Bad

  • Dale is awesome,no doubt about that but why is it called Gospelchops?I just don't get it...Maybe it's a kind of gospel where Victor Wooten is God ;p

To me,Gospel music is when James Brown sings in the first Blues Brothers movie.Great bass shops though ;)

  • Gerald Forrest, the creator of gospel chops, got the name because all of the musicians that he uses in his videos either played or play in the christian church. Hence, the name Gospel chops. And every musician knows what chops are, so that part is self explanatory.

  • Thanks for your explanation.

I must be a terrible musician because I still don't get the chop thing;I thought chops were like skills or something...

  • LoL, it's all good. That is basically it. Chops are your skills, ability, licks, basically everything that you do in your arsenal that makes up you as a musician.

  • Yo Dale is off the chain 4real.

  • there is a video that i got to that says that it is no longer available after the end of this and it is freaking sick!!!!! This is the definition of an humble bass player!!!

  • this guy is reeeallly good!

  • good? good? all this awesome sick, bad, phat, dopeness and all we can come up with is good?

  • that's my brother!

  • This dude is fast!

  • I play a 55-02 there is no difference other than the maple top on the 55-94, same guts

  • saw him with J Davey last week at the El Rey in LA. They were killing!!!!

  • well first that would be impossible because im a woman and second you talk like keston and your also 23 and act like it.

  • can sumbody tell me the difference between a lakland 55-02 and the 55-94...or is there no difference??!?

  • 55-02s are made in Korea, 55-94s are US made which makes the 55-94s a lot more expensive

  • lets hookup!

LOL the comments here are silly Yl

  • If i am mistaken that bass is a J&L made by some dude that was a part of fender and e left an took off. Those bases are sweet, nice tone and they have alot of models, check them out J&L peace!!!!

  • lol its a lakland 55-94 im pretty sure, well it's defientely a lakland, where did u get J&L from ahahahah

  • I agree, def a lakland. I think he meant G&L, which might have a similar headstock shape, but just guessing.

  • I've noticed that the best bass tone I've ever heard has come from gospel music played in predominately african-american churches. Whenever I hear a gospel song like this one, the bass guitar tone is BOOMING with awesome tone and power. What is the secret behind this bass sound?

  • feeling

  • Pay homage!!!!!!!!!...4:41!...Dat was one of the sweetest chord melodies I ever heard...

  • wow!

  • my bad, wrong guy yo

  • FUNKIN FURY!!!!!!!!!!

  • Talk or no talk I learned a lot from this plus that's the homie. So I think he was nervous. Can't tell when he plays tho!

  • Talk or NO talk? maybe you should learn how to speak.

  • Do anybody know what kind of bass that is ?

  • It's a Lakland bass.

  • in the beginning in 2:45 of the 2-5-1 turn-around you played the 1 using the middle finger but when you show it again you dont use it {unless its another chord}

    which one is right??

  • thats was crazy hand cordinnation at the end at 10:13 to 10:20

    im practicing that now...

  • he plays some 2-5 (circle of 4ths) at 0:35 this is wicked jazz tho I don't hear that much gospel in the first part

  • useful tips and nice playing. much respect, sir.

  • What an educated player...check out his myspace page too

  • wow how long has this dude been playin?..im inspired!!!

  • ur sick man dont even need a keyboard

  • I dig the combination of jazz/funk flow-style, that you have going on; you play/talk like you have a technical background in music, long with, i sure, natural playing ability... keep up the awesome sound!

  • This is a GREAT video..it has help me a lot with my chords!!...Thanks!!

  • Awesome feel and instruction. Seamless transitions. Love it. Im ganna have to get a new bass now cuz my action is horrible and my neck is broken... o well. Someday I'll be that good

  • This Cat is Sick.

  • great !

    visit my videos

    bye

  • Man that is sick son...if I wasn't so confident in my ability to learn and grow as a player and person I'd quit after watching this cat play. Hell I would quit after watching alot bass players play...can't be that shallow.

  • at the end of this vid all i said was....wow!

  • One of my favorite bass players.......straight up

  • I agree wit ech10 ... guitar players dont just start playin giant stepz like dat

  • Nice Brother Play that bass

  • WWHHHHAHAAAATT?!?! WTF is wrong with you? do you even play the effin bass? are you retarded. for gospel you need the low-B first off, secondly, all of his chordal work is on the normal strings of a four-banger. Also, he showed some great stuff with popping and slapping. Don't say anything if it's gonna be that stupid and ignorant.

  • little rhythm.. yea right... the dude is just nice at creating his own groove while style being in the pocket. It sounds like his out of the pocket but hes in there hes just doing his own thing while still being aware of the pace. And alot of bass players have taken a more LEAD role with there istrument which is good because they can be on the bottom and come and add different flavors to the music every now then.

  • You Fool...

  • are u kidding me? please provide us with the proof that he'll be stumped when he gets on a 4 string.....have u seen him play a 4 string? im tired of all these youtube haters (especially the ones that have no videos)....dale black is one of the better bassists in the industry...obviously ur too naive to know that...wow ur dumb....get off youtube

  • wow

  • i know the video is about bass....but that drummer was killing it too!!

  • Victor Who?

  • That Boyyy is from mars or some planet!!!

    AWESOME he is!!!!

  • One Word....BLESSED!!! My Man you have incredible talent. Keep doin what chu do brotha

    God Bless Your Ministry.

  • MABUNDA its just how brothers talk about these situations thats all

  • yes, He is very good

  • good stuff

  • i mad that the cameraman went over the drummer while dude was demonstrating some stuff.

  • this nigga is for surely up there, please get your basses out and practice because this nigga is a problem

  • I believe the bass line he "quoted" was Autumn Leaves, not Giant Steps.

    Nice vid

  • POBOYSTRUGGLIN--I See why you are "strugglin"!! I was talking about the progression heard @ mintute 1:20 to 1:41. "Les feuilles mortes" or Autumn leaves utilizes the II V I relatie minor progression that he teaches towards the end. Come on bro--know the music before you post. A little "shed" time will cure your ignorance of music.

    Peace

    -p

  • Here go brother, since I know you won't get the knowledge for yourself.

"GRIOT: n. / pronounced: "greeohs" / meaning; Ancient storytellers of West Africa who used poetry and rythm to teach villagers about their history...from Latin cretus, one brought up or trained, from past participle of crere, to produce, bring up; see create".

I chose that over the term griot over "Jeli" becuause it's more popular use in the English language.

  • Your assingment for today--Look up the name "mvemba" & its meaning. Then practice. It's OK man--"Ego te absolvo" for your lack of knowledge...

  • ah jajaj se pasó de lanza este vato. excelente.

  • This is my boy... Dale I see u! Ya main Kasey... dude u always been one of the tightest in my book. U up there dude...

  • I like this guy maybe he is not the best explaniner but his good thats for sure. Thx for inspiring me :)

  • ebs rocks best bass gear out there.

  • Why do you want him to play like victor and bill dickens like everone else? hes put his own spin on the two styles in my opinion. That giant steps thru me off I didnt expect it. Very nice!

  • Why do you want him to play like victor and bill dickens like everone else? hes put his own spin on the two styles in my opinion. That giant steps thru me off I didnt expect it. Very nice!

  • why do you want him to play like victor or bill dickens like everyone else? Hes putting his own spin on the two styles in my opinion. Nice Giant steps line though. If i could get my daughters into music like that.

  • Oh man, I just love this vid.. Are u doin slap???

  • Forgot to mention also--nice improve to the Giant Steps bassline.

  • Sorry for the typos--writing in a hurry!!!

  • Get you triplets tighter. As you play faster, you lose clarity and your notes just sound like ghost notes. Instead of the open hammer pluck method a la Victor Wooten, experiment w/ the up and down thumb a la Bill Dickens. Good though!!

  • victors ace but if you really wanna sound like bill plug your bass in turn it up and throw it down a flight of stairs

  • awesome control and finesse. and strangely enough sounds like "music", not wankage which is seems to make up alot of youtube these days. good stuff.

  • AWESOME! And the best part is that he is doing it for God. God bless you bro.

  • i didn't know him

AWESOME !!! more than very good man

    i love it

  • this is probably the best gospel chops bass vid.

  • He is very good!
