  • Its been a while since I watched this video but it is one of my favourites.

    I absolutely love Black Bear.

I'm glad to see there aren't so many comments this time by people annoyed that it wasn't just pipes and drums.

Rejoice in the celebration of unity, don't wallow in the solitude of nationality :)

  • Magnificent. The 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army salutes you.

  • Scotland's a big party - and everybody's welcome. Might be my imagination, but these American soldiers look like they've got a wee bit of a spring in their steps there!

  • while this is awe inspiring i prefer the "bad-pipers" version

  • Now when the pipes are ringing and the kilts are swinging. And your heart is singing as you gaily march along. You can hear the story that is brave and roary In the tunes of glory of an old Scots song.

If you're standing near them and you ever hear them. You will want to cheer them as you feel the glory there. Because the rhythm fills you and the drum beat wills you. And the music thrills you of the old Black Bear.

  • look at the Americans...wanting to pretend to be scottish, how bad is this. truly awful. leave it to the real highlanders please. The Black watch!

  • @sundimented how many folk in the Royal Regiment of Scotland Pipe Band d'you think will actually come from the Highlands? A handfull. Most of them'll come from the Central Belt.

  • @sundimented mind you, they're from nearer the Highlands than the US is, so you've still got a point.

  • @sundimented fuck off you fucking prick... the world is so fucked up because of closed minded motherfuckers like. yes one of the best if not the best tunes on the pipes, but this right here shows the world unity, and that there are so many countries that try and do get along...

  • @sundimented i dont know how someone could say that this is a song that should only be played by highlanders and only on the pipes and the drums, you should be proud as a scot, as i am, that other nations would have the honor of playin this tune with the highlanders

  • @fisherman06100 We do indeed consider it an honor, fisherman. Scotland has a wonderful history. It is good to have such friends. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Semper Fi from Texas.

    Vietnam 69-71 5th Marines 2/1

  • @Rikki0 Rikki thank you for your service in that difficult time. i had many members of my family in vietnam, both in the army and the navy. the world is very fortunate have people that show the dedication and give the self sacrafice that you and so many others have through out time.

  • @fisherman06100 Fair comment. It just doesn't sound quite as good or as impressive.

  • All you non-Scots out there, especially the Americans; this one tune is one of the most famous marching tunes played by the Highlanders, especially the Black Watch. When the enemy heard this tune they knew the 'Devils in skirts' were coming! Ask the French at Waterloo! It's the sound of some of the toughest and bravest soldiers in the world coming right at you!!!

  • that hot air force corporal

    wow

wish she was blowing me to this tune

the oi you think they shout should be" war" thats what they shout in jockville

    scotia ya bass

  • Wonderful tune! but i would play it only on the Bagpipes and no other instruments. Your words, kennyy1690!!!

  • Glad to hear that some people in the audience know where to put the "Oi!"

  • this is a fighting tune to get you fierd up to kill and keep on killing till you drop.

  • Played at D-Day.....

  • I was recently best man at my best friend's wedding, held at a Renaissance Festival in Texas. The reception was held in the pavilion there. He had a group of pipers to supply the music. Unbeknownst to me he also planned a surprise for me. At one point he had them play "The Marine Hymn". I almost cried. It sounds wonderful on the pipes. Then they asked for requests. I immediately said, "Black Bear, sir". They all grinned and the leader said, "By God, sir you know pipes. Right, sir."

  • @Rikki0 Great story and a memory. I'm from Houston and I know the Ren Fest well. I love "The Black Bear". I was brought up on the pipes and drums by my father, Maj. Edward Driscoll,. He passed away at 93 in March and is resting at the Houston National Cemetery. He served in the CBI Theater in WW2 with the Black Watch.

At his graveside service I had pipers play "The Black Bear".."Going Home" and "Amazing Grace".

  • Asolutely Brilliant.

    Away The Gallant Forty-Twa.

  • Black Bear can stir one's emotions anyone, anywhere!

  • Get on with it guys. Of course this is return to barracks. I am no piper either. Anyone who enjoys our music and culture will do me.

Hello. How are you doing ? Thank you for listening. You play it any way you like and welcome.

I was born within earshot of the one o'clock gun. I have a fighting chance of being buried in an indepenent Scotland. Never thought so, but better get on with it !

  • This, I believe, is the traditional tune played for the return to barracks.

  • JACK CLARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • think I have said great afore.!!

  • I stand a little taller when I hear this song. Possibly my very favorite bagpipe tune.

  • Im at something of a loss. Why are they all wearing different national uniforms and flags?

  • @grimblebrumble17889

Its whats called a Tattoo, many band from many nations come together for a concert

  • @grimblebrumble17889

The Tatoo involves other militaries from the commonwealth, hence the other uniforms.

  • I remember this like it was yesterday. Before my first tour.

  • How many times have I marched off to this tune when I was in 8/9 RAR.

  • Can anyone tell me when and where this military assembly took place?

  • I love the Bagpipes and drums...I too will catch hell but I'm thinking there may have been one or two instruments too many here. This band is well organized and plays and marches well together. I can barely hear the Bagpipes. The drums came out well. I've been to Scotland several times and played in a lot of pubs there. One of my forefathers came here from Scotland in the early 1700's. All this from my family tree. Wish I could hear this with Bagpipes and drum only. Bagpipes on my utube site.

  • As a former Scottish soldier I would have marched through the gates of hell behind a Pipe Band playing Black bear

  • As a former Scotish soldier, i would have marched through the gates of hell to the sound of the pipes playing Black Bear

  • Beautiful tune destroyed..bagpipes are oK but maybe it is the recording.

  • Wow! This is the most astonishing video I've ever experienced watching in my life. I love everything about this video! I love this song! I never figured out what this tune was until I came across this video! Now I know! I'm not Scottish, but I love the country's culture! There is a Scottish festival going on every year in Pleasanton, California. I'm making it a resolution to attend the event every year.

  • Okay, I'm gonna catch hell for this, I know. But I can take it. The Black Bear is my favorite pipe tune, but I kinda like the addition of the brass. It doesn't attempt to take over the tune, it just throws in a little accent at certain points. I love it either way, but I think this one is pretty nice to listen to.

  • My name is Michael,i'm a German but i love Pipes and Drums sins i was six years old!! And my wish, when i was going out of this World,is to listen to the Black Bear!!

  • My name is Michael,i'm a German but i love Pipes and Drums sins i was six years old!! And my wish, when i was going out of this World,is the Black Bear!!

  • Would sound a hell of a lot better without clarinets, trumpets, kazoos or whatever else is in there. Scots bands are pipes and drums only thanks.

  • @faeembrugh

I completely agree to you. I'm "only a German boy" but authentic scotish music is only made by drums and pipes.

    All the best for 2011!!!

  • @Jueja100259 Aye but many pipers love to play with brass the whole tonality many tones appeals. Bill Millan is dead the dumkopf has died

  • THE BEST!

  • I love it

  • sounds better wothout the 'pipes

  • WE would march off the parade ground to Black Bear in 8/9 RAR

  • As a now retired member of Her Majesties Armed Services, hearing the Black Bear once again sends shivers of pride down my spin. I can assure everyone that once you've marched to it; as I have done on many occasions, it leaves you with an insurmountable pride you'll never experience again.

  • Are their hats made of bear hair?

  • @lidlekitty - that depends on to whom you are referring... at 0:15 those troops are wearing kevlar (LOL), the pipers and drummers (see 1:22 or so for a good up-close example of 2 drummers' hats) wear ostrich plume feather caps. The hats as seen on the color guard at 1:51 are in fact bearskin - albeit artificial bear skin/fur these days.

  • @lidlekitty yes, provided, historically by the Hudson's Bay Company.

  • A ''See you later'' to our Soldiers and a March Out with a Massed of Military Bands and Pipes and Drums playing ''Black Bear''......O what a night..!!

  • return to barracks tune.... brings a "tear to a "glass eye".

  • Love this tune - probably the best version I've heard of The Black Bear

  • The best pipes tune ever.Wonderful.But the place to hear it is on the slopes of Edinburgh on a lovely August night.Makes me proud to be Scottish

  • @PURPLEBEATTIE1 i am hopin to be across the pond for the tatto in 2012... one thing i have to odo before i die

  • @fisherman06100 Believe me you will have no regrets if you come to Edinburgh in August next year.As well as the tattoo there are many visitors as the city has The Edinburgh Festival on.Word of warning tho book very early cos Edinburgh is very busy in August with visitors coming from all over the world,

  • @PURPLEBEATTIE1 yeah all my moms family is still over there.... they all live in greenock so it will be a train ride up for the day... im very much lookin forward to it

  • @fisherman06100 I drove thru Greenock today on my way to Clydebank to visit a friend in hospital.Greenock is about 15 minutes by car from where I live

  • @PURPLEBEATTIE1

There is only one hospital in Clydebank, and it is big in my windows! It is a world class Heart hospital, I hope your friend has recovered well. If not, play this music to them! Regards from Dalmuir, Clydebank.

  • @40bytes lol I know it very well.I originally come from Dalmuir and when I was younger I had a flat at 577 Dumbarton Road and from my kitchen window I watched the builders build the hospital. My friend has indeed recovered. Many thanks. Small world eh ?

  • It seems scottishnationalist doesn't like anybody who is not scottish, irrespective of your ancestory. I wonder if he knows that a lot of the scottish catholics have irish blood in them, or does he ignore this point.

  • Gr8 tune makes you proud to be scottish where ever u r in the world!!

  • Wow ScottishNationalist did'nt like my comment?Well, I have to tell you they played the Black Bear at my Father's funeral on the bag pipes, But then he was from Nova Scotia,I guess in your eyes he was a Non-Scot too.

  • @mv2021nj I think he's overly sensitive. No, we the descendants of scot immigrants to N. America aren't Scots, but we ARE proud of our heritage. If blacks can be "african - American", why can't we be "Scotch-Irish American" and be proud of our heritage just as blacks are - and I agree, people who are not of Scots descent HATE the pipes, those of use who are of Scottish descent LOVE them.. I think scottishnationalist is confusing pride in heritage with us thinking we actually are from Scotland

  • @TheNaughtiusmaximus I think you are confused. I am not of Scottish heritage but was a Canadian soldier (of Irish heritage). I love the pipes and drums (or as we would slag the boys...pots and pans).

  • @cf80to01 oh, come now... Irish? call it "next of kin" to scottish! first - I love the irish warpipe. Plus, your "Irish" could quite possibly be mixed with Scottish. Think of Ulster-scottish, what in the US would be considered "scotch - irish" (scotch-irish being an american term) - to be more inclusive I could have said "those of non - celtic descent..." (and I would like to clarify that I was speaking very generally... there are many forms of bagpipe throughout Europe)

  • @TheNaughtiusmaximus Well said. I expect (being from the the Canadian Maritime Provinces) I am a mutt..... Irish, Scot, Brit, French, Aboriginal, American, etc.....) The only part I am sure of is the Irish, but I do love the Scottish Pipes and Drums. Some of my best memories in uniform are parading to the "pots and pans".

  • @cf80to01 most of us here on N. America are "mutts" ... me, mostly Scot (descendant of both direct immigrants and those via Ulster) but also Irish, Welsh, and Native American... nothing to be ashamed of, esp. since mutts make for more intelligent, loyal, and happy dogs... it's in the genetics, so it must be true of humans as well... look at the movie Deliverance... see what inbreeding does... LOL

  • @TheNaughtiusmaximus ....again, well said. I was not disparaging my heritage. I am proud of who I am, and I feel that I am a better person for being a mutt. For reasons I can't explain those pipes and drums still call to me though.

  • @TheNaughtiusmaximus I should have added that I was in the Canadian SSF (Petawawa) when we were rebadged to 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. Our new shoulder patch was a black bear and this became the Bgde march.

  • @mv2021nj ur right hes not scotish

  • in kingston ontario we love the bagpipes queens university (where i attend) is of scottish origin so we have an excellent pipe band and we also have fort henry (where i work). At the fort we play black bear whenever a hot woman is in the fort lol.

  • Interesting comments considering this is a CANADIAN event. A majority of the pipe bands are Regular Army, Militia or community based groups. To those that think these folks are not "true" Scots, you don't understand the nature of North Americans. All of us are a summary of our ancestors be they Scots from the Maritimes, Irish from Newfoundland or Quebcois. I am proud of my Irish and Scots heritage. I am proud of my country and also proud of the land of my father and mother's birth, Canada!

  • Bellissimo.

    Ciao

    Luca Italia

  • This would of been a hoot to see live

  • R.I.P. Bill Millin. I salute you sir.

  • Awesome. Nice to see all three cadet branches represented on parade and two Air Force Bands....black Bear just stirs the Soul~!~~

  • all those who say "OY!!".. "like" this

  • PIPES FTW!

  • proud to be Scottish

  • I really like this song, the march, the bagpipes, the drums. It's just amazing, I think this is real culture and a very nice one.

  • magnifico , bravo muy bien

  • In my travels I've found that any one of Scottish descent, is drawn to the pipes. Almost as if the blood inside you jumps to that sound! Also I've seen many a non-Scot, wince to it. A woman once asked me," This goes on and on, When do they stop playing?" I replied " Miss, they stop when you surrender."

  • @mv2021nj "Also I've seen many a non-Scot, wince to it"

You are a non Scot, you are an American you are not Scottish. Irrespective of whther your ancestors may have been Scottish or not.

  • @scottishnationalist Why did you bash mv202? He was paying your countrymen a compliment. I'm also an American. My ancestors were mostly Irish, but I don't claim to be Irish. I'm American. Does that mean I can't compliment the Irish?

  • @Rikki0 These same posters show up on this board periodically as welcome as flies at a picnic. For some reason, they feel they must be sure that nobody mistakes themselves as Scottish unless they pass their inspection. Frankly, nobody should care. The vast majority of Scots welcome their cousins across the pond to visit them and pay homage to their ancestry. Ignore them.

  • @lindygee Thank you for the reply, Lindygee. What you say is quite true. The Scottish people have a long and proud history and are a wonderful people. Unfortunately all countries have their share of trolls, including my own.

    Semper Fi.

  • too fast & should never ever have full band accompaniment to the pipes.

    *is dissapointed in canada*

  • i would LOVE to march to this tune one day, while playing the pipes

  • further to this that makes them scottish and they hang on to that with more fervor than most of you cretins posting here who know nothing of what it means to be scottish being born or living in scotland entitles you to claim that you are scottish but accepting scottish history amd values makes you scottish

  • this is for all the reprobates and retards posting here when the clearences happened the scottish imigrants settled and farmed canadian land with the same methods they farmed the scottish land they took with them there cultural identity and there cultural practices.

  • love the black bear one of my fav's being ex member of the 48 th highlanders of canada

  • love this tune

  • Nothing can match the pipes for tunes of glory! Or to scare the living daylights out of the enemy, especially when the Ladies from Hell are on the march.

  • Rousing stuff !

  • have always loved theis tune. Always diissappointed at Tattoos we only get a few bars. Thid video is valhalla. Love it and it is on my favourites also told others of the video. >

  • black bear should only be played by pipes and drums ie NO OTHER instuments

  • @kennyy1690 I agree

  • @kennyy1690

    I agree

  • @kennyy1690 Really? I think it would sound beautiful on the violin...albeit, nowhere near as powerful, but beautiful nonetheless.

  • @kennyy1690 I agree - the pipes are lost in there!

  • @kennyy1690 Do you not think tho that this isn't just a Scottish thing, this is a celebration of respect for the armed forces from everywhere.

If a Scotsman were in a jam in a 'live' duty would he be concerned about anything but whomever might be there to have his back?

Rejoice in the celebration of unity rather than the solitude of nationality :)

  • too mnay pipes and drums to make this an effective rendition of THE BLACK BEAR

  • The best music ever! Thank you Scots!!!!

  • AMAZING!!!!! bloody fantastic how OUR scottish music reach every part of the globe

  • The Ironic thing is, is that the kilt was only worn by the scottish highlanders, all of whom were catholic.

You orangemen should not be wearing gaelic dress or playing gaelic instruments.

  • this has to be one of the proudest most rousing military tunes of all time been parade commander a number of time were te pipes hve played this and never failed to be moved

  • YEEEEEE HA!! How could you not love that???

  • Magnificent.

  • Stirring stuff!

Who are the guys in light grey with red berets? No disrespect intended, but they seem to slouch along with none of the swagger and pride of the other bands.

  • @renard801

He renard801. The "guys" in light grey with red berets ar the Bundeswehr Musikkorp from germany.

  • Many thanks for the information, TheKamio.

I have now seen more of their stuff on YouTube. They are good musicians.

Strange, on the other videos they wear green berets, not red as here.

It seems odd to see an army band swing their arms so casually when they march, unlike the more 'rigid' British bands.

  • They belong to different parts of the Bundeswehr:

    - Green berets => infantry like armoured infantry and anti-tank troops (disbanded). Maybe they are ceremonial guards

    - Red berets: MP's, support, artillery, intelligence, engineers, anti-air etc

Please correct me if I'm wrong ; )

  • @renard801

As wimpous said, this is another band then those with the green berets. German Bundeswehr actually has 18 military bands, the color of their beret depends on the division or unit they are attached to. e.g.:

red berets are worn by the Heeresmusikkorps (army bands) 12 and 300,

green berets by HMK 2 and the Stabsmusikkorps (Staff Army Band = ceremonial service in Berlin), afaik

  • i love marching off to this song

  • overwhelming and beautiful, taiabondola from Italy

  • i always thought everyone marched off first then just the scottish regiments marched off to the black bear. i also was lead to believe that traditonaly it was the tune all scottish regiments marched back to barracks to. the brass section spoil it a little.

  • What do they yell?

  • Oiiii! :P, In Canadian cadets, some kids call it the Oi Song, cuz they dont know what it is.

  • At the EMT all the brass bands go off first only leaving the massed band of pipes and drums to play Black Bear.

  • In addition to below - though it's still good entertainment and shows team effort - Black Bear was written for the pipes and drums and when palyed by any quality pipe and drum band (not just Scottish - the Scot don't hold the World title) it truly stirs the blood. The brass sounds good but spoils the true essence.

  • @lecrazyBof - Very true!

  • Cruiserfrank - read the comment (this is to clarify for others, if need be) kilbraur said 'a bagpipe tune ruined by adding a BRASS SECTION'.I'm a born a bred northern Scot - my granda would spin in his grave at your comment - Where have you been brought up to think a brass section normally plays with a traditional pipe band?

  • Played in a pipeband as a drummer for years, and this is my Favourite still brings a tear to my eye

  • Omg i think some of the people there are from the best army in the world :O , oh yeah they are The British Army! ..... no more to be said

  • A lovely bagpipe tune ruined by adding a brass section. Absolute sacrilege. In Scotland that is officially illegal

  • agreed 100% haha

  • Officially illegal? Then why has every single Scots regimental band done it? Try telling the Black Watch or Royal Scots Dragoon guards that their bands can't play Black Bear with their pipes and they'll rip your balls off.

  • even in battle? spoils a good sound

  • I served with the Argylls for three years and we never had a brass section.

  • I've seen brass sections with The Black Watch, The Queen's Own and the Dragoon Guards. But then, I'm a Yank so what do I bloody know about it?

My hat's off to your service, by the way. I did 20 in the US Army.

  • Scots look very good ... as always ; )

  • Many thanks for this great video. :)

  • theres Canadian musicians!

  • NEVERMIND i read the info lol...... in Quebec lol....... Its a multi country tattoo

  • i meant good :)

  • The German's band not have pipe look like very boring = ="

  • let us :D

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Pay no heed to the many smal minded whingers on here - just go with the flow of this exuberant performance!

  • Well said.Just enjoy the spectacle

  • Thankx Winnie , both for the effort in production ...and the reminder to those who just cannot see the forest for the trees....some ppl will complain at their interrment that there is not enough earth covering them ....U just have to LRV the PIPES , OR DON'T BOTHER POSTING ....GO THE SCOTS!

  • Top stuff!!!

  • Hi, I'm English born. My Great Grandfather was a Lt. Colonel in India during the Raj in the 1890's and I can imagine him hearing the Scottish Regiments playing this when returning to Barracks. Its my favourite Pipe tune and think this is the best version the Black bear on the Tube at present. Thanks for posting.... We are so lucky to have such Great Military history in Britain and Our Scottish Regiments and tunes like this a big part of it. the ever present thin red line!!!!

  • dis is padantic but did anyone else notice the american soldier out of step right at the beginning, would never happen in britain

  • Hate to be mean, but those are Canadian soldiers in deserts. American troops would be at sling arms in combat gear. Plus American troops do not Shoulder Arms like that. US shoulder arms is very like British Slope Arms. The US military has no comparable drill movement to that Shoulder Arms.

  • i wz wondering why the yanks were playing d bagpipes :D

  • jesus not a jock among em, i live on the reiver border we are all cringing

  • Incredible band. I can tell that they're as good as I had heard, but damn, that sucks that the venue reflected so much sound.

  • Excellent and well done... thank you .

  • Thanks for your efforts in posting The Black Bear ...love this foremost of all pipe tunes....aussie Polak , been to Edinburgh Castle , been to a military tatoo, just love massed pipes .....I dont know why ppl hijack a music tribute like this with complaints ....LOVE THE MUSIC ...THE IMAGERY ....ALL THE HISTORY ...SCOTLAND THE BRAVE

  • @6905632418

I think I did it right Shiralee

  • This is a top tune and it is a shame that some of the comments on this page are total crap. This tune has nothing to do with the royals it is played to welcome the" jocks" back to barracks It was also the tune that lord lovet had his piper play as he came a shore on D-day because the highland devision had been left as the rear gard at dunkirk as a message that we were back and would not be leaving again

  • @HARRISGILLIE Yes thats exactly what its about.Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.First class tune

  • @HARRISGILLIE

    scottish please mate not jocks

  • badenmeliz from germany !!!!!

    good time all

  • Check your history! The Queen is a direct descendant of James the V1 of Scotland and 1st of England. James was the son of Mary Queen of Scots. The late Queen Mother was the Duchess of Strathmore before her marriage. The Queen is technically Elizabeth 1st of Scotland but she is still our Queen!! Ancient history is interesting but time to move on!!

  • My Scottish blood weeps over this lackey genuflection to British imperialism, the United Snakes of Amerikkka, and Cocaine-Cola. Poor Alba!

  • There are a lot of us from Scotland who find your statement offensive. The UK is under one flag, and one Queen, and proud of it. All due respect to you personally, but it ain't your country, don't worry about it.

  • Even this song ment as a "retire to barracks' sounds like a "battle formation" tune. Love it!

  • I guess the other troops are also international.

I like to do work that is almost impossible...

But bringing so many so different troops together, with so different instruments, and make it sound perfect?

    *impossible* ;-)

  • Professionalism at it's finest :)

  • sadly the pipes where "to much in background", not as clear as usual.

But perfection isn't good enough to describe it.

If I'm not mistaken, it was international.

Those with grey jacket and black trousers, red barret seem to be germans.

If international, it's even harder to get such a perfect result from

  • yes, germans, bundeswehr

  • pure class:)
