It's called variation. If you played the whole song at the samo tempo it would start sounding monotonous.

@SPS148669 What you are descirbing is actually characteristic of solo piano playing. The slowing down you hear is sometimes caused by wide leaps (the hands move a great distance in little time), or a deliberate slight pause for a dramatic effect before entering into a new section.

@SPS148669 It's an intentional thing. All these pieces are in free time, so the musician is free to speed up and slow down the tempo of the song to his own desire.

Its not so much that hes struggling to play it at a constant tempo, but more that it's more expressive for him to vary the tempo on the fly.

Just bought the Piano Collections book and this was the first piece I wanted to try... hahaha I have a deathwish, at least for my hands XD I forsee lots of practice with a metronome and gradually speeding things up 8D;;;

I tried but it raped me up the butt. I got like the first 2 notes then just gave up. I recently got sheet music though. So i'm going to try and learn it and put it up maybe. Great song.

@DevonCosmos Depends what you mean by 'playing by ear'. Personally, I can read music, but not at sight and read while playing. I learn from sheets and then play back from memory. Given enough time something like this isn't any more difficult to play from memory as it is from sheets. It's the actually playing itself thats difficult for both. Playing by ear/memory just takes longer to learn.
