  • @TheMelodyblues my point is that a good singer is a singer, not a model

  • Thanks for sharing

  • Great song and great singer!!!

  • 7 people are still in chains

  • "None are more hopelessly oppressed than those who falsely believe they are free." - Goethe (Illuminatus).

  • i hear whites singing this song, i really dont know how they can relate to it.

  • @ajahamza I wish I could be free of hatred, of lies, of poverty, of indentured servitude disgusied as jobs, of judegmental attitudes, of sexism. I wish I could live up to my potential. I have million things I wish I could do but am constrained by chains that bind us . The chains of the economic system enslave us all. Many humans have these desires I think. The working and underclasses have always suffered ~ our problem is we do not see what unites us. That's how I relate to this song.

  • @tabithatwitchetty Lmao I wish for a day when whites may be able to look at people of different races and see them as human beings without losing sight of what is special and unique about racial or ethnic membership. I wish for a day when blacks do not have to pay the price for white man's identity crisis. i wish for a day when Every where Blacks are on this planet, OUR PROGRESS AS A PEOPLE is not ALWAYS BEEN INTERFERED BY Whites,

  • @tabithatwitchetty ''our problem is we do not see what unites us. That's how I relate to this song.''

Althought i empathise with your sentiment, we didnt creat a society or culture that justify oppression, enslavement, subjugation, etc. I believe that it should be firmly established that this racist perspective is a result of a collective white supremacist mentality that defines Western civilization in of itself.

  • @tabithatwitchetty Am sorry but this how i see the world. Whites cant not empathise with this song, you have to be member of an oppressed to relate. The last time i check, still have the botth the political and institutional power.

  • @ajahamza Many people of all races can see themselves as a member of the human race and celebrate and respect the diversity and uniqueness of cultures as a positive aspect of humanity. I accept the history of my culture and its impact across the globe. There is bugger all I can do to change history or the global economy, I can only try and live my life with awareness respect and personal morality. As a white working class woman I have no power. The working class in any country suffers opression.

  • @tabithatwitchetty The song is not about the struggles women face or the struggle of poor people. This a song about BLACK struggles. I personally believe that you have to be a blacks people to really tap to the emotions of this song. I dont think we will agree on this, maybe am being unreasonable because of the way i feel about whites people.

  • @ajahamza All music is interpreted by the listener individually and that is why we can relate to music from other cultures. I totally agree that the main theme of this song is about black struggle and of course I cannot relate to or have suffered that particular form of opression. Music can develop empathy on some level. It can also educate and open minds to other views and ideas that may allow us to change the world for the better and eradicate hatred and inequality whatever form it takes.

  • @tabithatwitchetty me emocionaste mucho, gracias

  • @serramalaga eres bienvenido

  • @ajahamza to me thats a very blanket veiw, we all stuggle it dont matter what colour you are!

  • @ajahamza Listen to the lyrics carefully: "I wish I could share all the love that's in my heart/

remove all the bars that keep us apart". What good do songs like this one do if people keep separating themselves from each other? Yes the song is about black struggles, but it is also about love, tolerance, and people coming together despite what separate us, be it race, gender, nationality, etc. Just my 2 cents. :)

  • @roxpr2000 i really wish i could see the world they way you do. The black history and my own personal experience of the west and with the white race stops me from seeing the world the way you see it.

  • @ajahamza Good grief, you're a 28 year old girl living in London. If you have experienced more grief (in your personal experience) that is bad luck and nothing to do with whether or not you have black heritage. Do you honestly think there is some conspiracy that "the white race", whatever that is, keeps you down or "stops you from seeing the world as you see it", to paraphrase your bollocks. Please supply details on what injustices you have experienced due to your melanin count..

  • @donkmeister There is much evidence to substantiate this—I know so many whites have simply ignored and cast from their collective consciousness acknowledgment of the white-on-black racism that has characterised the west, so I might actually have to launch into a diatribe to remind some you of this—if it is necessary,. It really won’t take that long, but in this case i cant be arse. I dont live in the west anymore, so not my problem, but in continent? i will make it my problem,

  • @ajahamza The beauty of perfect music such as the sort produced by sublime artists like Nina is that it can help us to relate to each other on a level that skin colour often prevents. It can touch the soul, develop empathy and support understanding and knowledge. Music, dance and art is, and always has been, universal. It unites us as a species while being so diverse it makes the mind boggle. I relate to Nina as a woman and as one who has struggled and, though relative, it is no less valid.

  • R.I.P Nina, now you really know how it is to be free from this crazy world today.

    EKSally

P.S you are not missing a thing believe me!

  • Wow. That made me tear up a lil bit.

  • @txherezy me to!!! " I'd sing cos I'd know that! I'd know how it feels to be free!!! " we all know , we all get the massage!!:)))

  • Best song ever.

  • Oh and thanks to you, SFS! I need to get this record.

  • Nice job, Life On Mars (uk). One Nina I hadn't heard. It's so great,

  • nice...

  • Beautiful is the word. Amazing.

  • why a pic of her smoking? free to smoke?

  • I wish i could knew who these five guys who doesn't like this song...

But the one thing i knew all of them from Connecticut.

  • My absolutely favorite song as she sings it.

    Timeless.

I feel the message, the music of this song applies to all of us each unique one of us every where at every time on this earth.

    Oh joy!

    God bless you Nina Simone.

  • Funny... just like Curtis Mayfield... the power of less! How strong it is to sing quietly! Go Nina. RIP.

  • Lot's of great versions of this song, but once Nina sang something, it stayed sung...

  • What a wonderful rendition of a very moving song. Discovery chain: funkysober's new song Sunshine into my life features the singer from the Coke ad which licensed part of this tune. Thanks Boy George!

  • Brilliant if you enjoy this then listen to the version by Dionne Farris.

  • @paulspalace

Thank you paulsplace. I took your advice and checked our Farris' version of the song on youtube. You are right, it is a good rendition. The slower pace, slower than Nina's version, is more reflectivee. Gives reason to think and reflect. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • possibly the most powerful song I've ever heard. Its intensity builds with each verse. This woman knows what it feels to be oppressed, and she sings this from the very depths of her soul.

  • This is now, and will forever be, the definitive version of this song. Billy Taylor and Nina Simone are both legends. God bless their souls.

  • This is great. However, I think some of the live versions of this song blow it out of the water.

  • Very Beautiful. Touches the soul.
