I want to say thank you to Stephen Fry! It is a wonderful show and he is actually brave to want to open up to the world and reveal that much about himself. I adore the man, he is a great inspiration and role-model to both me, and I imagine a lot of people, all over the world. And YES this generation is lucky.. To have someone like Stephen Fry! Love from Denmark!
SF: "Our generation, you know, we don't know we're born, as the old saying goes. We've never had to work as hard as our ancestors. We've never had to suffer as deeply as our ancestors. We've never been treated like our ancestors. Yeah, we talk about how there's no respect anymore, but actually, our lives, in the most fundamental ways, are more respected, now, as lives, and our, you know, existences are more respected than ever our ancestors were. So, there's much to be proud and pleased with."
This was very touching! Dear Stephen, I am truly sad about the horrors that happened to your family. My greatgrandfather died in WWII, but on the Russian side, fighting the Germans, trying not to let them through and conquer the East side of the European continent... 25,000,000 Russians died in that war!...
I have cried and that says a number of things to me. One, the film was excellently made. A story told with due diligence and two that I agree wholeheartedly with Stephen's sentiment and comments about how lucky we are in some parts of the world today and how much respect we actually have as beings in a society that actually to a much greater degree cares what happens to each and every one of us. It's such a disgusting pity that some want to return us to world riven with hatred and death.
Seeing Stephen Fry have a moment was very sobering. It's just another reminder of why we should ever let the past repeat. The Holocaust was truly one of the darkest moments in human history.
As many posts here have said, I want to imagine that Pavel survived. Sure it's not very likely but it's possible. Since we'll never know, I want to think he was happy with lots of kids of his own living a long and full life.
A very nice documentary about Stehpen's ancestors. I did some family research myself here in the Netherlands and I went back to about 1600, eleven generations back. It's very exciting to find out who your ancestors are. What I always find very touching, is that a lot of people still become very emotional to hear sometimes shocking things about their ancestors, although they have never known them. They still feel the family bond, after such a long time....
I dont know if anyone has noticed but there is so much footage of the Jews in Holocaust times, I found out the reason for this a while ago, Hitler was planning to wipe out the Jews compleatly and he wanted to have a record of the dead race, which thank G-D never happened as we would not have ppl like Stephen fry.
I want to go back in time and punch Hitler square in the nose for making Stephen Fry so upset =0( It is heartbreaking to see your hero feeling so sad.
If Hitler were around right now I could cheerfully strangle him after castrating him with a dull spoon. May Hitler burn in hell for what he did. All those people dead, murdered on his orders...and for what? One man's ego and delusions of grandeur?
@furrantee Do you really think, that is was just only because of one man's will? Millions wanted to get rid of the jews, and they want it today as well...
@TheArchangel1526 True, people wanted to get rid of the Jews. Yes, there are people who still do today. But what Hitler did was bring it to a point. He was a charismatic leader who told his people he would make things better and that all of their problems were from the Jews. Sheep have to have a shepard, lemmings need the Pied Piper. Even peaceful protests can become violent and start torching cop cars. Hitler didn't start anti-semitism but he helped provide the match on the powder keg to war.
You're so right about your generation, Stephen -- but there are thousands in Africa and the Middle East today whose reality is the same as that of the poor Lamms during the Holocaust. Genocide is reprehensible wherever it happens.
It was so moving at the end when he was reading out the survivor's story. It shows how the choices we make take us down one path instead of another. I felt overwhelmed with sadness but also eternally hopeful, and I like to think the human spirit truly does triumph over adversity. Wonderful Post.
This program has completely inspired me. I know nothing about my family history, I can only hope nothing like Stephen's ancestry has happened in mine.
This was one of my favorite ones of the series. I cried both times that I watched it. I know a great deal about my family history, nothing so horrific has ever occurred within it. Our family was very blessed in that. I adore Stephen Fry as an actor, and as a fellow human being his story, his family story has reached myself and others in a way that as Jeremy Irons put why he loves Ireland, without any bullshit.
@MrsFreshMorning it's assumed he died at Auschwitz. Not all the deaths of the Jews held in concentration camps were recorded or found in the future. It's very heartbreaking to discover, especially if they were family.
Three times I cried, dammit. (throughout this little series) Not much gets to me like this video has. Appreciate the upload. Think I'll be seeing if I can get a copy of this, somehow. (a -purchase-)
The final statement Stephen makes "so lucky simply to to be alive" gave me chills down my spine. Its true had Stephen's grandfather not come to England and stayed his family may never had existed. Stephen's story made me realise how lucky/fortunate I am to have my family around me. I just cannot comprehend how anyone person can be so evil as to decide to kill a whole load of innocent people, as Hitler did. Thank god his family did survive.
There might be seperate software not sure but I use ancestry dot co dot uk it has all the records saved on its data base. Including newspapers and probate. A very good site
@heat000 It s alway s POSSABLE but not very likely. It is nice to think he did and lived to be very old with a family of his own with MANY grandchildern. Miricles DID happen because there are still Jews, Thank you Lord for THAT. . Chances are if he did live Steven will never know because records back then were inconplete but considering everything better then you could exspect.
@LadyKatherine1960 and just imagine one of the grand grand grand children op Pavel doing a family history research like that and finding out about this documentary. That would be so wonderful and something everybody should hope for
@DeanMalenko Oh my IF that happened and I were EVER heard about it I WOULD cry..shoot I would flood my self. . I just WANT to believe Pavel had his miricele and lived a longgggggggggggg life with MANY grandchildern. I hold on to that UNLESS proof turns up other wise.
Very sad that one of the girls (Livia) ended up at a different camp, shows how families were torn apart. Imagine how terrible that would have been for a 15 year old girl. They didn't really touch on that, but that impressed upon me a lot, being not that much older.
The name is in Hungarian (Pál=Paul, I have no idea why BBC translated it Pavel which is the Slovakian version I guess), but the writing under the name must be Hebrew.
omg so sad. i was crying also :( what a wonderful story. Also the Lisa Kudrow story is so so sad. check that one out. I also cried with the Kim Katrall one, its obviously not the same tragedy as this, but sad nontheless. i'm addicted to this programme.
