Thanks for this. It's amazing. I remember looking for them on comps and "The Greatest Story Ever Distorted." I also distinctly remember finding out they were from New Jersey (I am too) and being disappointed. They sounded exotic and I wanted them to be from somewhere else. What an idiot I was! Now it just makes them seem greater!
Used to play Smersh on college radio around 88-92...brilliant underground band that was undeservedly overlooked..but they were included on some various artists samplers such as KK records: Crack of A Belgium Whip
Yes...I love the song "Hoedown", I had heard these guys on colloeg radio K.X.L.U.while I was @ U.C.L.A. in 1988 and they blew me away then, and I agree they were and still are ahead of their time
I heard these guys back in the 90's on late night radio doing "Judy". I taped the brodcast
and remixed the track using the recording. I thought that I had a rough setup!...I had always pictured them as some harsh punks. These guys are awesome! Total basement analogue dorks. Love the Smersh. Thanks for the post!
the greatest american band from the eighties ephemeral "cassette culture" that no one has ever heard of ! some asshole like david geffen should re-release their entire back catalogue on one huge box set and see what music would change into in ten years...

One looks like weird Al, and the other looks like the kid from my school who plays too much Nintendo DS.

Profitez-en, c'est une des rares traces laissées par SMERSH ici bas. Un son unik.
