millions of dollars used in financial aid, thousands of schools and hospitals created in countries that are in desperate need of both education and medical aid. not to mention the thousands of "evil" christians that travel overseas to help build houses and these schools and hospitals and help run them. thats the good that the catholic church "alone" does what do you do to help the people in need?
This whole discussion is framed as what good does religion do? As if religion were a thing that could do anything. It's like asking if "Ideas" do any good? It greatly depends what the Idea is. Animals are basically selfish. We are animals, so as far as I'm concerned a 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' is a good start. You are noticing the Us vs. Them aspect of organizations, but you have to remember that organizations are the alternative to all vs all.
You need to understand that it is not the religion that caused those wars. The Church was run by man, and still is. Cardinal Richelieu, Cardinal Mazarin, and so many other politicians were put in high positions by France into The Church. These "Cardinals caused alot of problems. Remember, Religion is run by man, but based on God. The Holy Wars had absolutely had nothing to do with religion, it's called Power. You really think the dirt poor soldiers died for religion?
@TheBullMoose95 Dirt poor soldiers dying for religion? Possibly. Remember, religion offers answers and a way to a better life. Dirt poor people tend to want both, and be able to afford neither.
If I recall, the Crusades, perhaps the worst done by Christians (on scale more than in deed, I don't really want to examine the Spanish Inquisition) was based on the pope wanting to keep power away from the feudal kings. It was a power struggle.
The pope wanting to keep power away from feudal kings? True, but no. It's called politics. You really think religion had to do with the Crusades? The only Crusade that even came close to a religious cause was the first. After that was just for money and glory. Yes, it was a power struggle, between man.
Global atheism? Are you nuts? Really, a world full of people who didn't give a damn about morals or respect other people's opinions. What a morbid thought.
@TheBullMoose95 The pope called for the Crusades in an attempt to keep power over the people. I'm not sure why you say no to anything I wrote. Stating it was a power struggle between men is in no way fundamentally different from what I said. Please clarify.
Do you think believing in a religion is the only way to have morals or respect for our fellow human beings? If so, what a sad world that requires a father-figure watching you for you to be decent.

Maybe global atheism would force more honesty.
