so your states seperate little governments were getting the power all confused so we gave most of the power to the federal gov? so, why didn't we just come together as one big country instead of small mini nations. .
sooooo..... the reason we need a stronger dad is so that it makes it more difficult for citizens who are being overtaxed to rebel.... and this is a good thing?
@kreendurron No, a stronger dad so make us more of a family. To be able to formulate a foreign policy, have a national economic policy that will lead to economic nationalism and be able to as a nation with a federal government which is supreme in the relationship with the states eventually become a world power. There is no need to rebel when you elect your representatives. You rebel at the ballot box. And as we have progressed we try to make that power of direct democracy stronger.
@hughesDV I think a simple observation of the status of the country proves that the 'rebellion of the ballot box' as you put it is ineffective at best. If it took one violent uprising to do away with the monarchy, it would probably take one or two more to do away with the aristocracy (though they may now have fancy titles we have a wealth based aristocracy running this country).
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

The current government of America is deplorable! I hate the government officials! Not all of them, but there are very few government officials that I like, very, very few! OK, but now the problem is that Dad is using the belt a little too often and too much. Dad is telling the kids "You must buy health insurance or I'll use this belt on you. Now do it or else!" And some of the kids (attorneys general) are taking Dad to court. And Dad is interfering with Arizona's ability to handle the illegal alien problem, so Kid Arizona has taken Dad to court. So now, we have an equally difficult problem.
lo. good one. Perhaps Arizona the child is violating the Family Constitution (I remember when little Alabama did that in the 50's) Ans some of our brothers and sisters are running around without insurance and then sticking us with the bill when they end up in the ER.
I like your reply though. The analogy can work from a liberal or conservative perspective I guess. Good thing we are all family.
Thank you for your kind comments. We will never know if the 13 colonies would have expaned or not, or Hitler ever coming to power, and the ending slavery under the Articles of Confederation. It is anyone's guess on what would have happened if the Articles of Confederation were still in tact. Knowing history, it probably would have died a long time ago anyways because the world is made up of people that want to be left alone and those that won't leave them alone.
Wow, under the Artciles of Confederation this guy admits that the federal govenment didn't have the power to create armies, wage wars, and collect taxes. Imagine that, the wars in the Middle East wouldn't exist, the military industrial complex would no longer exist, and the IRS would be gone. Maybe the Articles of Confederation wouldn't be so bad after all. We would truly be free.
Good points nomoreserfs. At the same time we would not of expanded westward, been able to stop Hitler, ended slavery, expanded civil rights nor reached the status that we have today. (We still are the dominant currency and envied by peoples across the globe) Although sometimes things look bleak, I'm not sure 13 mini countries could of weathered the last 250 years alone. But again a good point you raise.

@hughesDV Without the expansion westward there would not have been the mass genocide of various Native American people, and under the articles it is feasible that the various Indian nations could eventually have joined the United States. Under the Articles the US wouldn't have been able to conduct foreign wars meaning we wouldn't gotten involved in WWI meaning Germany would likely never gotten into a situation where someone like Hitler could come to power.
@hughesDV (continuation) Slavery was an unsustainable institution that would have eventually died on it's own, and likely would have sooner that it did had it not been protected by the federal government (which it was prior to the 13th amendment). The Civil Rights amendment would not have been necessary had there not been government instituted racism in the first place.
@nomoreserfs just good. this guys ideology is flawed. thats the reason why have 50 states that have their own government (and constitution btw)and their own capitals and we have senators that represent the states that they are elected in because each state is like its own country. thank god for the bill of rights and especially the 10th amendment thus states' rights and not having a powerful central government that cannot dictate the affairs of any sovereign state.thank god for thomas jefferson
@hughesdv so you must also think that its a good deal for us that the U.N. has the ability to modify our constitutional rights, Obama has the right to hold our country hostage to pass his socialist reforms that are quite blatantly passed using deceptive and stealthy "Cramming Through" with private threats to congressman on multiple occaisions, in the past the "bailouts, and healthcare" , More recently his comments to Senator kyl?

While some may argue the Feds are too powerful, you cannot deny the positive aspects of history which could not of taken place without a strong Federal Gov. How about ending Jim Crow. Do you like interstate highways? How about child labor, think that should of ended? You like your slaughtered animals to be kinda of clean? Thanks Feds... How about cleaner air or water, do you really trust states or BP? And what right has the Feds taken from you? I may agree but dont deny prgrss.

Articles of Confederation? You forgot to mention the Virginia Declaration(should have been a bill) of Rights 1776 that were not in the constitution of 1789. A bill of rights had to be added by demand .....also note the wording between the original Virginia declaration of rights and the United states bill of rights. Also take note of the wording of the constitution and go to an old black law's dictionary and translate the wording to get a better picture of what is going on.
Brilliant!!!! You are Amazing! I'm listening to you from now on because you are the only one who can explain things in a way thats easy to grasp and fun i might add!!!! :D Thanks
I do have to add that using Ike and Tina Turner as the analogy is not all that fair in that white men beat up on their wives too and I am tired of black people being painted in a negative light in so many ways.
Good point greatbydesign, black men have def. been portrayed by the media in a negative brute like way and the association of Ike could be construed that way. I assure you I pick my analogies based on common association, which ever ones most people register with (know already). I also consider myself a feminist and rest assured I address domestic violence throughout the year.
Research the financial history of the feminist movement in the early 1900's..
Relating to shay rebellion I would recommend you look at historical documents relating to banking and you will soon come to the conclusion of why usury/interest was banned for hundreds of years, and you will also learn how it is used to grab land and in those days you went to debtor's prisons. It seems the banks tried to take too much from the already poor farmers..... I will give you sources to look up if you msg.
thanks, i think it would be AWESOME if you made many more of these. As a student that is trying to get some studying in, it's a great resource to have someone teaching you, where you can rewind and re listen... beats taking notes!! thanks
The AOC failed in that it sucked as the US's first attempt at a national government, but that doesn't mean it was an overall failure. It's thanks to the AOC that it helped the states successfully fight a revolution against Britain, provided stability throughout the war (and kept colonists focused), gained France as an ally, negotiated the Treaty of Paris. More significantly, the fact that states gave their western land claims to the national government as an asset, and land ordinances
... show that the AOC were not a failure....it did, however, have many problems which Shay's Rebellion highlights....but yeah, at least that's the abridged explanation of how the AOC were not a failure (as I had learned in my history class)
Your right, I do a Good, Bad and Ugly lecture for the AOC and always include your points...... Of course Native Americans might not be thrilled lumping in the NW Ordinance with the Good.
Shay's Rebellion? Those farmers had real grievances; they weren't crazy people & they were being ripped off.
Some wanted to consilidate power in the hands of an even smaller & wealthier group eve more than they already had
Seemed to me the insistance of excluding the majority of people form daily political say was the heart of the issue & continued w/ the new constution, as that was the result
This is at the heart of the anti-Federalists & Federalists debates w/ Madison etc.
The 1787 Convention notes he took make it abuntantly clear that was their purpose in creating the new govt w/ instutuins like the senate in the first place: keep the power in the hands of the opulent few. That POV is reflected in the rehtoric against the Articles; so people repeat that w/o knowing it (some)
Ha, I grew up in buffalo. Your high school should be named after Czolgosz, not after a tyrant like McKinley.
It's also invalid to argue that because the AoC failed that therefore a strong central government was needed. The constitution was formed to halt people's movements such as shays, not support them.
Now we are overtaxed to the extreme from every possible angle. The Articles of Confederation did not allowed federal taxes or abusive State taxes. Thats why the Revolution happened anyway. They left England because of taxes and the Alexander Hamiltons brought the US Federal Government and Central Bank ideas over to America.
I disagree. Our "daddy" is not the federal government. The states are sovereign. Even under the Constitution, the states have nullification powers over the federal government and just recently Montana nullified a federal gun law.(The Sovereignty Clause only gives the federal government sovereignty in 18 enumerated powers) Plus the 10th Amendment was a major principle found in the AOC. The AOC failed because it wasn't finished yet. Even the Anti-Federalist papers stated that.
Nullification is not in the Constitution, it was invented by the states following th Alien Sedition Act in the KY-VA Resolutions. I am not too attached to the arguments so I can appreciate your passion. The analogy works just fine for the US regents, perhaps you should take it up with them.
Its always interested to me that the 10th is thrown around unless your talking about progressive issues. Forgive me if I am wrong but I would assume your pro gay marriage b/c of your love with the 10th.
Nullification is not in the Constitution, but it was a principle taught by the Jeffersonains. No, I am not pro gay marriage because of the 10th Amendment. I am not even for marriage by the state in hetrosexual couples. Marriage used to not even be an issue determined by the state, and was simply a legal union.(I am for gay legal unions) You are right about the 10th Amendment. The federal government has disobeyed it many times.
I see your point. The law although does recognize "marriage" certificates with tons of governmental rewards (taxes, wills, insurance, social sec., etc) and like or not marriage is a social status that is embraced by large segments of the population. With that being said, gays have a point when they cite the 14th amendment. The 14th does trump the 10th in regards to equal protection. There is also the issue of Full Faith and Credit which is seemingly violated with DOMA.
Thank you sooooo much... i am actually watching all these videos to study for the Ap exam! on friday! a great overview of everything... CAN you please do WWII?
Look if you want to argue for a different future thats fine. But you cannot change the fact that the Constitution grew out of the weakness of the Articles. I could tell it different but that would be kinda of counterproductive. Why I am at, could I also teach we won Vietnam and up is down and black is white. Peace. I can see where you are coming from though.
It is actually Mr. Dude and I do not "make" up the history, I just teach it. I teach the concepts on the regents examination. SO if you have a problem with a concept on the test such as the need for Federal Power after the collapse of the Articles perhaps you should take it up with the state of New York's Education Department.
Articles of Conferderation failed for two extremely simple reasons, 1. Each state coined it's own money, no national currency. 2. Communication problems, lack of communication technology. Today it would work no problem.
Yes, he said the tree of liberty should be replenished w/ the blood of patriots and tyrants. (or something like that). As an Anti Fed he did not trust power and liked the idea of power changing hands, of keeping the power mongers under a careful eye.I believe during Shays he was in France(w/ Sally Hemmings),it would really not be until the Louisiana Purchase that Jefferson would adopt a more expansive view of what gov. power should be.But in his younger days, TJ dug a revolution. Hope this helps!
No, the federal govt was never intended to be our "daddy". The states and the people were and are not "children". You're entirely wrong on these fundamentals.
Also, I don't know of any children that want to give more power to their "dad". No one _commanded_ the states to give up the Articles and join the Constitution. They all signed on of their own free will.
You really do take things literally. The point is just to get the kids head in the game, then you have the opportunity to teach the facts. The facts the states signed into the idea of ratification (following Fed. Papers). The analogies are just a way for kids to understand the fundamental idea. Of course the analogy can be argued, yeah, kids don;t give up power to Dad easily but the concept that a parent makes certain decisions for the best interest of the family ) is easily digestible.
so your states seperate little governments were getting the power all confused so we gave most of the power to the federal gov? so, why didn't we just come together as one big country instead of small mini nations. .

There is also the issue of Full Faith and Credit which is seemingly violated with DOMA.

DUDE YOUR AN IDIOT FEDS SHOULDNT HAVE POWER AT ALL!!!!!! IT TAKES ALL THE POWER TO THE PEOPLE AND GIVES IT TO A KING
case and point george bush.... where did that lead us? TRILLION dollar debt
nunurox 3 years ago
It is actually Mr. Dude and I do not "make" up the history, I just teach it. I teach the concepts on the regents examination. SO if you have a problem with a concept on the test such as the need for Federal Power after the collapse of the Articles perhaps you should take it up with the state of New York's Education Department.
Respectfully,
Mr. Dude Hughes

Thank you for the video.

Articles of Conferderation failed for two extremely simple reasons, 1. Each state coined it's own money, no national currency. 2. Communication problems, lack of communication technology. Today it would work no problem.

Thomas Jefferson wrote that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing. why????
dazzle323 3 years ago
Yes, he said the tree of liberty should be replenished w/ the blood of patriots and tyrants. (or something like that). As an Anti Fed he did not trust power and liked the idea of power changing hands, of keeping the power mongers under a careful eye.I believe during Shays he was in France(w/ Sally Hemmings),it would really not be until the Louisiana Purchase that Jefferson would adopt a more expansive view of what gov. power should be.But in his younger days, TJ dug a revolution. Hope this helps!

exactly what I like, hardcore decentralization!!!

No, the federal govt was never intended to be our "daddy". The states and the people were and are not "children". You're entirely wrong on these fundamentals.
Dirtfire 3 years ago
Its an analogy bro. Relax.
PIGSforTRUTH 3 years ago
Also, I don't know of any children that want to give more power to their "dad". No one _commanded_ the states to give up the Articles and join the Constitution. They all signed on of their own free will.
Dirtfire 3 years ago
You really do take things literally. The point is just to get the kids head in the game, then you have the opportunity to teach the facts. The facts the states signed into the idea of ratification (following Fed. Papers). The analogies are just a way for kids to understand the fundamental idea. Of course the analogy can be argued, yeah, kids don;t give up power to Dad easily but the concept that a parent makes certain decisions for the best interest of the family ) is easily digestible.
