@wfly81 I love Whippin' Post. I know what it is to not like a copy of a song one loves. I understand you. However, for me, I love what Frank does with this, and this is a killer version of the song in all respects.
@wfly81 Have you heard the Mothers do "Happy Together?" I can see how someone would assume what Frank covers, by reputation, would be a mockery. He mocked various things often. Even originals are often played seemingly bad on purpose, with irritating mocking vocals, etc. But this has his own touch on guitar (seriously gutsy enough for the song, I like it), a decent gutsy vocal, and for me it's played straight and with gusto to the end. I'd say it's a damn fine tribute, but that's just me.
I grew up with the Allman Brothers, and I listened to Frank and the Mothers on vinyl......WOW! Frank seems like he's doing a parody of the Allmans, and rocked the house.
I grew up with the Allman Brothers, and I listened to Frank and the Mothers on vinyl......WOW! Frank was doing a parody of the Allmans, and rocked the house.
Frank has such an unusual picking technique with the two bottom fingers on the frets and he almost plucks the strings. Also wonder what makes him pick certain songs by other artists to do.
Spellbound when I watched this show on a DVD outdoors in a Film Festival in Rome, this summer. Holy Shit... WHAT a show, even by Zappa standards. A MUST HAVE DVD, folks!
Loved it ! I saw him do this live in Dallas in 1981. A lot of people mistakenly think Frank was just some goofball who sang novelty songs and they have no idea what a fantastic musician he was. I like the funny stuff , too.
You're OK Bob6. Hitting the nail on the head. so to speak. There's a lot of phenominal live Frank "toss-offs" as you put it. Pretty tight band to pull it off. Never thought of any of it as a cover, but rather as tributes. Boot-legged and weird old vinyl is the best stuff I've ever heard, when they just go. Frank freakin' Zappa.
@justplainstupidbored I'm embarrassed to find all my replies stacked-up here (sorry KaZm!) But I have to add that if you think the critics are tough on FZ here, you should read what the Beatles fans are doing to FZ on his "I am the Walrus" cover, it's a hoot! I love the Beatles, too, but FZ has a way of de-and-reconstructing these tunes that makes me smile. (Beatles? Great pop. But FZ? Historically far more signiticant.)
Classic Zappa cover- Better than Greg could do with the piano. Get outta here Frank is the shit!!!!! Woke up from up nap with this in my head and realized this IS MY LIFE
@mccarol1956 abotu your calling this Zappa cover of Whippin' Post a "butcher job," I understand what you mean... the Allman's original has always been one of my favorites, to the point of being wrapped around my musical spinal column. But "butcher" is part of the point of an FZ cover. It's got a different "head" of irony, counterpoint and experimentation. It's apples and oranges. In the universe of Zappa music, don't judge him by this; it's a toss-off just as "Stairway to Heaven" was.
You can see the approval and smug satisfaction in Zappa's face near the end. He was such a perfectionist and cruel taskmaster. I'm sure he was thinking...."Nice job, Bobby. You nailed that one!!" He certainly did. What a voice !! What a talent !!!!
this band is KICK ASS, all of them giving superior performances and I'm not just talking about the music, but also stage perfomance. One seemingly crazier than the other.
@olibjorn I think that's Zappa's crowning glory, if that makes sense.

Isn't it great when you take an already great song, by a great band, and make it even better. Well actually, it's pretty tough to separate the two. I'll say this though, Bobby Martin absolutely kills it on lead vocal. The band is amazingly tight too.
When Greg Allman was asked in a 2003 interview with Gig Magazine which cover versions of Allman Brothers Band songs he really liked, he said that Frank Zappa did a kick ass version of 'Whipping Post'. The interview is on the Allman Brothers Band website.
Fuck this shit...i dont hold anything against zappa but the fact is the allman brothers wrote this and made a 60s/70s sounding masterpiece not some 80s sounding crap...Live at Fillmore East version is so much better and Gregg Allman's voice is more soulful plus Duanes and Dickey Betts's guitar work
@telecasterman081095 : It started in the early 70's,at a festival in Finland,(?), when a very stoned Allman Bro's fan demanded "Whuppin Pooost".Zappa tried to
explain to the guy AB played earlier but he kept it up,every song.In the end Zappa asked the band to play it, for the guy.And they did, unrehearsed. Homage.
@theMacvarish That's the story I've heard as well. I think this version is excellent. The musicians give all what they've got. And they are having fun playing it as well. Does Humor Belong in Music — Yes!
@gubsak55 : I was told it by a Zappafanatic.Apparently while Zappa tried to explain to the guy they were the Mothers, the band launched into it,right of the cuff. Afterwards it became a tradition, the band would rehearse it without Zappa so each tour was different. The DVD this is from also has "Mr Sting" on it. Watch it just to hear the engineer slowly fade Sting out.
@telecasterman081095 There are far better sounding versions of this song from other Zappa tours. Check out the version from the 1988 tour, when Frank had a much bigger band with a full blown horn section!
Fran rules! best cover ever of this un-coverable song!
