  • How can I get the tone that Frank is using? I have a Peavey Vypyr.

  • GRACIAS ZAPPA POR EXISTIR

  • I remember when this aired originally. The whole show is magnificent. This is truly what rock and roll is all about. What a lineup. This really does Greg Allman's tune justice.

  • Did Zappa ever have a bad musician play with him?

  • @jeffmat4355 I heard somewhere that Punky Meadows was in a live performance of Punky's Whips. So maybe, depending on your opinion of him.

  • Anyone who likes this should seriously listen to the Allman Brothers version.

  • Just realized that Zappa and Prince is the same person!!!

  • I didn't know much I miss Frank till I saw this video, I never knew he did other songs!!

  • wow :D

  • Chad Wakerman is my Favorite Zappa drummer,

I dont understand why he is so underrated, i just love his sound and his style and he s very good in improvising over Frank Solos you can hear that on the Them or Us CD

Oh my God Robert Bobby Martin has such powerful vocals, they sound so soulful and bluesy and the man can also play Saxophone and Keyboard what a multi-talented Force the man is

    to much talent : )

  • @Zappafan1980 Totally agree man!

  • @Bluestravelerallfory

I just bought the, The Torture Never Stops DVD

Its AMAZING stuff 30. Octobre 1981 New York, 1 and 1 / 2 hour pure Zappa Force

The You Are What You Is Band they play almost every Song of the CD and some Songs of Tinseltown

    Rebellion

The picture and sound quality is very very good

Ed Mann and and Chad Wakerman are an amazing Rythem Team

Frank Solos are very good that Night

  • @Zappafan1980 I was learning a Barbara Streisand song and got a live CD of hers from the library and Chad Wackerman was the drummer.

  • @Zappafan1980 Best was Simon Phillips without a doubt :p

  • @Zappafan1980 I mean Terry Bozzio hehe - not Simon P.

  • @Zappafan1980

And of course the bassist is awesome. He works perfectly with the solos.

  • @Zappafan1980 Vinnie all the way in my opinion! Chad is definitely very good though, why else would he be in franks band! haha

  • Frank and the Mothers doing what comes naturally - playing great music, entertaining and leaving a lasting impression.

  • @Zappafan1980 Agreed totally, except I couldn't make a choice between Chad And Terry Bozzio. And in this band, i love Scott Thunes who's able to play his bass guitar from the depths of his craziness !

  • rotflol

  • Frank Zappa is the coolest guy that ever lived.

  • @Mettal4 He's right up there with Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix

  • @Mettal4 agree on that :)

  • Does Anyone know...how old is Rober "Bobby" Martin?? (Keyboardist here) and what he Doing Now? ? ?

  • @deglomerant Dont know how Old he is in this clip, but I believe he is still playing at random concerts and stuff like that - different events and such plus he is selling Fitness "Packs". :)

  • To solo je úžasný!

  • This version makes the original sound dull :-)

However Allman Brothers were great too !

  • Whos playing the drums?

  • Comment removed

  • @Bluestravelerallfory Drummer is Chad Wackermann

  • @Bamzuz Cool thx a bunch mate, he's a beast !

  • Thumbs up if he could've pulled off doing all the songs for School House Rock.

  • I was at this one. Bobby Martin crushed the vocal.

  • My wazoo! The Mothers make every cover their own.Too bad he didn't have time to rockify some phoney Frank Sinatra songs

  • Go Bobby Martin!! And Scott Thunes is such a psycho haha

  • big find...frank was well rounded!

  • 1:51 ♥

  • Awesome.

  • guitar solo

    *film face close up*

  • I wish I could have seen him(about 100 times)

  • Thunes - Frank's badass bass man. Impro maggio galore!

  • is that Matt Murphy playing the other electric ????

  • @tootime100 nope, strat player is Ike Willis, guy playing the tele is Ray White.

  • How could ANYONE dislike this video.... :/

  • Check out the y.c.d.t.o.s.a. vol2 in 1972! someone in the audience has a request for this song wich is actualy a coverversion(Greg Allman)...............Ass kickin version..........or better.....AssWhippin!

  • best dvd ever

  • How many of you have seen "does humour belong in music" ? its exelent!!

  • wow thats quite a deep V that keyboard/singer is wearing!!

  • @oldladyapt213 it's for a saxophone

  • @patdocsteeler38 his shirt is for his sax?? idk about that

  • @oldladyapt213 sorry, you're right. for some reason i thought you were talking about the strap

  • @oldladyapt213

think it was especially for 'he's so gay'

  • @Valrost thats a great song but most likely

  • holy shit, i havent been into Zappa for too long now, but i gotta say.. that vocalist is sooo fuckin good, can someone tell me his name? :)

R.I.P Frank, we all miss you!

  • @Cwilfert56 Bobby Martin, he's changed a little bit since then.

  • Seen that concert in Germany in 1984! ''Them or Us'' Tour

  • If you can't see the pure, raw emotion in Franks face and every move, you are an idiot who probably thinks Kiss is a great rock band!

  • Look at the expression on Zappa's face. From start to finish not even a trace of emotion, just pure concentration. Genius

  • >>Love!<<<

  • Seen him play this in providence. it was longer and even better. frank played foxy lady hendrix too at that show. WOW

  • Duane had nothing on Frank ;-)

  • Wow. Frank single handedly made this song even more amazing....

  • I've said it a dozen times today in utube comments - Frank respects just about everything he parodies.

  • Lol a harbor xD

  • UNIQUE

  • Genius is all ways COOL!

  • It's the end of Dancing Fool

  • Does anyone know what is the song they're playing in the beginning? Is it some real deal or just random messing around?

  • please god, bring back frank zappa.

  • Killer guitar tones from FZ and Ike willis through this whole show.

  • TIGHT as F*CK!!!!!!

  • PS - Frank Zappa, Jesus thinks you're a jerk...and I agree.

  • @wfly81 I love Whippin' Post. I know what it is to not like a copy of a song one loves. I understand you. However, for me, I love what Frank does with this, and this is a killer version of the song in all respects.

  • @skidancin I have no problem with cover tunes, but this is a mockery.

  • @wfly81 Have you heard the Mothers do "Happy Together?" I can see how someone would assume what Frank covers, by reputation, would be a mockery. He mocked various things often. Even originals are often played seemingly bad on purpose, with irritating mocking vocals, etc. But this has his own touch on guitar (seriously gutsy enough for the song, I like it), a decent gutsy vocal, and for me it's played straight and with gusto to the end. I'd say it's a damn fine tribute, but that's just me.

  • NOW thats what I call GUITAR WANKIN'!

  • 2:54-3:02 .... Unreal

  • 10 mutants detected.

  • AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

  • I saw him twice but never saw him do this. Duane would have been proud. What talent we have lost in both musicians.

  • @mns8858 No, Duane would NOT have been proud. He's spinning in his grave.

  • thanks for posting this.....the world lost a great talent

  • Wow.

I grew up with the Allman Brothers, and I listened to Frank and the Mothers on vinyl......WOW! Frank was doing a parody of the Allmans, and rocked the house.

  • Wow.

I grew up with the Allman Brothers, and I listened to Frank and the Mothers on vinyl......

  • I heard Cosmic Debris on the radio in a line-up that included Joni Mitchell singing California. I almost died of shock.

  • the guitar player is black!

  • @unknownkingdom And his name is RAY WHITE!

  • @unknownkingdom two black guitarists. isn't that just typical.

  • Frank has such an unusual picking technique with the two bottom fingers on the frets and he almost plucks the strings. Also wonder what makes him pick certain songs by other artists to do.

  • Seen him do this at Stony Brook University Gym in 1984, Halloween show, still the Greatest concert I ever saw.

  • @ 5:40 frank is like i wanna play guitar..... stop

  • Spellbound when I watched this show on a DVD outdoors in a Film Festival in Rome, this summer. Holy Shit... WHAT a show, even by Zappa standards. A MUST HAVE DVD, folks!

  • BE E UTIFULL!

  • Music is the best.

  • Loved it ! I saw him do this live in Dallas in 1981. A lot of people mistakenly think Frank was just some goofball who sang novelty songs and they have no idea what a fantastic musician he was. I like the funny stuff , too.

  • I'm digging Chads Simmons

  • R.I.P The only genre for this mans music is called "ZAPPA" END OF!

  • God i love this track.wish i was there to see it live.

  • Was not called GLEE when Frank invented it.

  • Was not called GLEE when Frank did it ...

  • yes...i think FZ and the boys did to Whippin Post what it deserved....

  • Keep jammin frank where ever u r ....

    OM SHANTI OM SHANTI.....

    Bob martin's brilliant vocals

  • Keep jammin frank where ever u r ....

    OM SHANTI OM SHANTI.....

  • is that drummer chad wackerman

  • @JimmyPagerules1 yes it is chad wackerman

  • @JimmyPagerules1

    yes right on

  • best segway to that song ever

  • I was at this show

  • You're OK Bob6. Hitting the nail on the head. so to speak. There's a lot of phenominal live Frank "toss-offs" as you put it. Pretty tight band to pull it off. Never thought of any of it as a cover, but rather as tributes. Boot-legged and weird old vinyl is the best stuff I've ever heard, when they just go. Frank freakin' Zappa.

  • @justplainstupidbored I'm embarrassed to find all my replies stacked-up here (sorry KaZm!) But I have to add that if you think the critics are tough on FZ here, you should read what the Beatles fans are doing to FZ on his "I am the Walrus" cover, it's a hoot! I love the Beatles, too, but FZ has a way of de-and-reconstructing these tunes that makes me smile. (Beatles? Great pop. But FZ? Historically far more signiticant.)

  • Southern rock... but from the south of where? Lotsa fun.

  • What is the interlude? befor the "whip. post"?

  • @frazier618 Dancin' Fool

  • @frazier618 Yeah, I thought it might have been "Stick It Out"

  • sikk

  • Awesome Vid...Thanks!!1

  • Nice

  • Classic Zappa cover- Better than Greg could do with the piano. Get outta here Frank is the shit!!!!! Woke up from up nap with this in my head and realized this IS MY LIFE

  • Classic Zappa cover- Better than Greg could do with the piano. Get outta here Frank is the shit!!!!!

  • Butcher job on a beautiful song!

  • @mccarol1956 It's a Jam you Stupid Idiot, I'm sure there are worse covers, but you just don't mix "Zappa" and "(Worse)* in the same sentence.

  • @mccarol1956 abotu your calling this Zappa cover of Whippin' Post a "butcher job," I understand what you mean... the Allman's original has always been one of my favorites, to the point of being wrapped around my musical spinal column. But "butcher" is part of the point of an FZ cover. It's got a different "head" of irony, counterpoint and experimentation. It's apples and oranges. In the universe of Zappa music, don't judge him by this; it's a toss-off just as "Stairway to Heaven" was.

  • Comment removed

  • This is coming from a huge Zappa fan and i know he has his own fun with songs but this one was butchered

  • @tenn1983 You have to be kidding? The original version is the best but this is the best cover ever. That guy has great pipes!!

  • Frank WAS TO AWESOME FOR THIS WORLD!

  • Zappa sound is Massive.

  • Gotta love the sound of zappa's guitar..

  • kuriositeetti. Tämähän ei edes ollut Zappan biisi. Joku juoppo oli tätä kiljunut encorena Suomessa. Sen jälkeen tämä biisi oli Zappan ohjelmistossa !

  • Zappa makes me want to cry because he's dead :'(

  • I Was Sitting Right In Front Of The Left Speakers, Ears were ringing 4 2 days!! Still Miss You BUDDY!! You Were The Best!!

  • Great!

  • very cool

  • Love how much fun Scott and Ray are having at 3.18!

  • WOW, remember it well. What a show it was.

  • this band is KICK ASS, all of them giving superior performances and I'm not just talking about the music, but also stage perfomance. One seemingly crazier than the other.

  • @olibjorn I think that's Zappa's crowning glory, if that makes sense.

Like, it's disappointing watching the vids on here of Dweezil Zappa's ZPZ tours. Yeah, they get a good sound out. But most of the time I see his band just stood (or sat) around, generally not looking like their enjoying themselves or that they're really into it.

  • Sure glad I saw Frank play live!

  • Bobby Martin rocks my socks. I could go gay for a pair of shorts like that.

That aside, what a song to go out on. Zappa and co. sure knew how to give you your money's worth.

  • That guitar solo at 2:30 is awesome! That's why Zappa should shut up and just play his guitar more often...

  • some tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimes iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelll............................

  • I miss Frank Zappa SO much!! He was amazing.

  • Wish bands were given the opportunity to get as tight as this. Its so much easier to do it all easy like.

  • Bobby Martin smacks it on this.

  • Isn't it great when you take an already great song, by a great band, and make it even better. Well actually, it's pretty tough to separate the two. I'll say this though, Bobby Martin absolutely kills it on lead vocal. The band is amazingly tight too.

  • When Greg Allman was asked in a 2003 interview with Gig Magazine which cover versions of Allman Brothers Band songs he really liked, he said that Frank Zappa did a kick ass version of 'Whipping Post'. The interview is on the Allman Brothers Band website.

  • This is great to escape from modern crap.

  • What a Man's real guitar playing is all about...GENUIS

  • @marekstob "Does Humor Belong In Music?"

  • Fuck this shit...i dont hold anything against zappa but the fact is the allman brothers wrote this and made a 60s/70s sounding masterpiece not some 80s sounding crap...Live at Fillmore East version is so much better and Gregg Allman's voice is more soulful plus Duanes and Dickey Betts's guitar work

  • @telecasterman081095 Its a tribute fool, a sign of respect nothing to get in a nerdrage about

  • @telecasterman081095 : It started in the early 70's,at a festival in Finland,(?), when a very stoned Allman Bro's fan demanded "Whuppin Pooost".Zappa tried to

explain to the guy AB played earlier but he kept it up,every song.In the end Zappa asked the band to play it, for the guy.And they did, unrehearsed. Homage.

  • @theMacvarish That's the story I've heard as well. I think this version is excellent. The musicians give all what they've got. And they are having fun playing it as well. Does Humor Belong in Music — Yes!

  • @gubsak55 : I was told it by a Zappafanatic.Apparently while Zappa tried to explain to the guy they were the Mothers, the band launched into it,right of the cuff. Afterwards it became a tradition, the band would rehearse it without Zappa so each tour was different. The DVD this is from also has "Mr Sting" on it. Watch it just to hear the engineer slowly fade Sting out.

  • @telecasterman081095 There are far better sounding versions of this song from other Zappa tours. Check out the version from the 1988 tour, when Frank had a much bigger band with a full blown horn section!

  • @telecasterman081095 dnt talk kid
