  • check out the work of manupupule at fine hawaiian art dot com

  • It's pretty silly the way some compare this guy to Rembrandt. He is no closer to Rembrandt than Grandma Moses is. Like other similar figurative painters of today, they all have one thing in common: doing bad paintings. Putting in the spooky aspect to these "Odd" narratives in no way improves the paintings as paintings. I cringe with embarrassment for the figurative camp when I see such things. Oh, and if you were contemplating suicide, this soundtrack may well send you over the edge.

  • He is the master of painting, you are the best

  • An amazing explorer of the inner realms. The way he scumbles with sandpaper imparts a subtle blurring of dream and "reality."

  • Greater than my boy Remmi? Boy you must've lost your ga'damn mind!Dont get it twisted, his work is aiiight but not even close to Rembrant.

  • @Sketchbookable agree

  • I don't think Rembrandt and Odd are comparable, they express different things in similar languages. This is Kitsch. Ugly and shocking they are, but beautifully shown. Is this not what Rembrandt did when he painted a meat carcass? When he beautifully painted ugly people and himself? He didn't idealize, but he wasn't a realist either. Odd and R both uplift the common and mundane. If Odd was begging for acceptance from the PM he wouldn't have cut all ties to them.

  • i had to do a project about kitsch painters...can someone tell me why is he considered kitsch?

  • Rembrandt's rolling in his grave. This isn't Kitsch. It's the worst kind of Contemporary Realism, ugly and shocking, bowing before the Postmodern establishment, begging for acceptance.

  • Dude, I just "found" this guy, and he is rocking my world. I am obsessed.

  • beautifull, like rembrndt he captures the soul

  • Why aren't there any pictures of Odd Nerdrum, nor any interviews with him? He seems publicly withdrawn.

  • I studied with him in his home in iceland, he doesnt do interviews, he doesnt let people take pictures with him, i spent 3 months with him and i couldnt take a pic with him. the best he did was sign my book! hes something else!!! way out there!!! a master!!

  • Wow, you met him, and knew him personally? How is he?

  • the music was by "Dead Can Dance" but they made us take it off

  • I loved the music as it was before. Can somebody tell me what that was?

  • Its from the instrumental NIN album "Ghosts"

  • What a treat to find this piece on Odd Nerdrum, an artist who I have always found provocative and (pleasantly) unsettling. The music fits the atmosphere of his pieces succinctly and invites to contemplation. Another incredible work you have put together here.

  • What intrigues me most about Nerdrum's paintings are his settings. You can imagine shelves and shelves of old leather bound books describing the chain of events that led to a world portrayed in a Nerdrum painting.

  • are his paintings still at weinstein?

  • rambrandt style indeed!

  • Greater than Rembrandt??? One thing is sure ,without Rembrandt's art there would be no Nerdrum's art in the form as we know it today and as for a content of Nerdrum's work ,this is what sets him apart from other boring artists who are scare of any subject that deals with death, love, sexuality,war..ect

  • yeah, his content separates him somewhat, even though a lot of contemporary artists claim to deal with the same subject matter.what separates him is obviously his craft, without question. but i believe in the genius. many "genius" painters today could spend their entire lives trying to paint representationally, and not be half the painter nerdrum is. he is timeless. he would have been a painter no matter when he was born. a lot of artists today are logical and painters only because of this age

  • I think his drawings are even more powerful than his paintings.

  • A great artist indeed. Btw, whats the name of the song? Its beautiful

  • Thanks for the post, about time Odd Nerdrum had something on here. thanks

  • Odd nerdrum is a genious !

fantastic the video with dead can dance's music!

  • He is greater tham Rembrant!

  • You know, one thing Odd always says is that he wishes he could paint as well as Rembrandt...

  • nerdrum IS standing on rembrandt's shoulders, so to speak. i don't know about better though. i admire nerdrums technique, but i wish sometimes that he had a different choice of content for his work. either way, in terms of craft, both masters who are willing to keep experimenting. that's what makes them so good.

  • @richardbrompton He is totally different than Rembrandt! Personally im a fan of Rembrandt so i have a little bias haha

  • if you like rembrandt as i do, you will love the work of hawaii artist chris campbell and herb kane
