It wasn't because of any noble standard McCune held that word of his misdeeds got out. Columbia was making balls for his doubles partner and fellow Indianian Don Johnson that had softer shells. When Columbia refused to make a "soft ball" for McCune he went out and found a chemist that figured out how to alter the shell of a regular ball. McCune began bragging about how smart he was to a couple guys on tour and soon everyone had cans of MEK in their motel rooms. Maybe the biggest of PBA scandals.

Funny Bo would refer to Eugene's Daddy as a champion. Don McCune was the father of the "soaker". 1973 was the ONLY year he won because nobody could figure out how a man that never hooked the ball more than three boards could suddenly swing it twelve. When the governing body caught up to his underhanded trick a new rule was added to the rulebook. After that Don never any better luck than before his cheating spree in '73. Eugene's brother is the "Soaker" as Don is the father of both.
