Since the human body doens't have a mechanism for dealing with large scale heavy metal poisoning I'd have to say the disappearance of symptoms is purely coincidental.
If mercury were in fact causing the symptoms then removing the fillings would only halt progression, not reverse the damage or ease the existing symptoms.
