This song about Georgian artist "Niko Pirosmani" he was deeply in love with French actress who visited his town and to demonstrate it, bought her enough roses to fill the square in front of her hotel window :)))
@tenpura2010 Strictly speaking, this song is nor Russian nor Latvian - this is SOVIET song, with music written by Soviet Latvian composer Raymond Pauls and lyrics by Soviet Russian poet Andrey Voznesensky.
Their music is so sexy, just like them, And also, their skin complexion looks really good on them. Very Asian... Bravo! Traditional Korean Music Rocks!
The original is a Latvian song "Dāvāja Māriņa" (Mara has given) composed by Raimonds Pauls with lyrics by Leons Briedis. First performance at the 1981 "Mikrofona aptauja" by Aija Kukule (youtu.be/bxcfMuzlCBc). Then came russian version of song "Миллион алых роз" (Million Roses) with lyrics by Andrej Voznesenskij, witch is later translated to many other languages.
Thank you for reposting this version of this song. The earlier posting is good but it was filmed from afar so this is great. Any idea whether their music is sold in the States??
@tenpura2010 The original is a Latvian song written by Raimonds Pauls (Latvian composer) "Dāvāja Māriņa" (''Mara has given''). Later he wrote a Russian version for Alla Pugachova (Russian singer).
@li2001157 For Million Scarlet Roses, yes, but before that there was Latvian song with Latvian lyrics "Davaja Marina", in which, I assure you, Voznesensky did not take part in.
@tearlight Which were beautiful lyrics, but not the master piece that "Миллион алых роз" was, which is why Raimonds Pauls chose to let his music be used with the Russian lyrics that made his music famous.
@li2001157 Surely, as you seem the master of Latvian, you are aware of the bitersweet emotions the Latvian lyrics imply and which are lost in translations (!). And, of course, the fact that Russian is a language spoken by millions whereas Latvian is dying out could not have played any part in Pauls's decision and the popularity of Russian translation (!)
I rest my case hoping the sarcasm got accross and willing to agree to disagree.
@SpardaLos Before the Million Rozes there was "Davaja Marina", which was not composed by Andrei, but Latvian poet (sorry, too lazy to google which one exactly), hence the original is entirely Latvian.
Jonghyun's version is still way better!!! It made me cry!
