Micheal Stipe wrote this song after announcing that he was in fact gay in response to critical comments he recived from certain preachers in his home state,who told him he would find find salvation if he repented his sinful ways and not be cast out like a biblical leper,so he responded in the only way he could by writing this song (great song tho).Liked your interpretation.
