Since the bridge was designed to support railroad traffic, the weight of vehicular traffic should be nothing compared to that. Are simi-trucks allowed over it?
The town of layton does have a Brick factory (abandoned) - the bridge is still in use today and the tunnel and road can be seen in the begining of the Movie 'Silence of the Lambs" (car sceene)
Does anyone have any historical information on the town of Layton? I think the town was named after my Great Grandfather who built a brick factory there long time ago. Please email me if you have any info on this town, thanks.
That's not a Nazi symbol. I drive on that bridge and through that tunnel everyday. And yes Layton is the town where Buffalo Bill lived in Silence of the Lambs. Drive past the house everyday as well.
Okay, a 40 foot section of this bridge is going to be replaced. The road will be closed later this month and re-open in late next month. The river section will not be touched, as far I can tell.
I have walked over this bridge and the construction plate gives details on the construction. The railroad that ran here was the Washington Run Railroad. (Named for the creek that the railroad followed.) Tickets for this railroad regularly show up on eBay. The railroad went from Layton to Star Junction. There is also a wooden one lane bridge about 1/2 mile towards Perryopolis that is a remnant from this railroad.
I've crossed this bridge many times! And if I'm not mistaken it was used for the bridge scene in the Mothman Prophicies. Some parts of Silence of the Lambs was filmed in the town of Layton it's self too!
Looks like a cool bride followed by a neat tunnel. What do you do if someone comes the other way? Is there a light that only lets one person cross at a time? Don't sweat it about the negative comments. That's just a You Tube standard. They do it to get a rise out of people. We have a local car deal who post their specials on here. They have made smart ass (sorry) comments but if you make one back they won't let it post.
We can see if someones coming through the tunnel on the other side(vice versa if your coming from perryopolis through the tunnel you can see the other side of the bridge)and you have to stop before you get on the bridge(or come through the tunnel) and let them pass.
We had an old bridge located in South Mississippi similar to this one, but smaller. It was still being used by traffic until one tragic day when it collapsed killing three people after their vehicles plunged into the swollen river below. I am now very phobic about these old structures.
Nice video...I cross that bridge/tunnel often...love the comment from Master784. Did he spell one word correctly or use anything that resembled grammar?
I am heading South From Linden Hall, down through Layton PA and toward historic Washington Square In Perryopolis. If you are travelling through the area you can turn off PA Route 51 travel throught the square. This is located about 1 mile from center of town Perryopolis
Dude. That was an interesting history piece. Do they ever have problems with accidents ?
Also, in your description, please tell us exactly where you are and what direction you are heading. Some of us are not from Western PA.Kepp up the good work. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

MrSuperRileymoore 1 week ago
@MrSuperRileymoore I am not sure...My guess is they stopped in the 20s or 30s and then it was converted to a road

@JPa311979 The Tunnel Hole is too low for a Semi to go thru. The first section before the trestles is what is rusted bad...

That's not one lane....it's called single track tunnel.

What a narrow drive, also, there appears to be a Nazi symbol on the left when you first enter the steal beam frame.

If I just read the local news paper right, this brudge is going to be replaced. It failed an inspection. Just too sad to see more history gone.

This bridge was on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. It crosses the Youghiogheny River and the old right of way of the
Pittsburgh and Lake Erie RR's Connellsville Line.
-Not sure when the bridge was abandoned/converted.
