Wonderful James, bloody wonderful................... It was a pleasure to have met you in Italy. I hope we meet again sometime. I remember Brian K walking away from the piano but I could still hear it and then I noticed you were playing it, and then you had a shot of Kenny's bass. You are a star and a lovely person as is your Judi............ Cheers Martin.
I remember being blown away seeing James switch between trumpet and trombone on stage at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest. Those were my high school days, and those artists made a huge impact on my life. I'll be awarded my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in five days, and now James has a one-man and drummer (funny how the drummer is perceived as non-human!) big band album. No matter what you accomplish, or how well you play, the bar is always set higher. Back to the shed...
What you can't play drumset? What kinda lame-ass are you? Drums are the easiest to get a noise from but you can't even do that? What the hell's wrong with you??? I mean come on!!!! you can't take the time and sit down to learn one more instrument? What the fuck is wrong with you??
@mcrock17 Hi mcrock17 - You're so right. My guess is that the insecurity in some people gets threatened by such excellence and accomplishment, that to make themselves feel better about themselves, they criticize or tear down, instead of tip their cap. I think it's a pride and humility thing.
But this project by JM is incredible and amazing! Big applause for you, JM! Encore!
I love it, great performances. But as a keyboardist, I was disappointed, too - it looked at first like you were playing the entire big band from your electronic keyboard, and I was marveling at how you could get the section parts to balance... Then I saw the faces and realized you weren't just faking the parts... You sure play a lot of horns, I only know a couple other folks with that much versatility and anything close to as much talent on each. Amazing. Good luck with the project.
isn't the entire point of jazz to make good music, express yourself, have fun and take the audience along with you? I clicked on this video out of curiosity and stayed for the music. Jazz is supposed to touch something in your soul and this did. Well played, James. Well played.
Boyoftrain, just read your response to James...glad that you recognize your initial response looked strange. I take back my comment about you being contrary...it just wasn't communicated the way you intended. Thanks for being gracious indeed. It just baffles my me why anyone would do anything than have positive comments for such an initiative...bring on the flames, I would relish the debate!!!
this could easily have been gimmicky with crappy musicianship... everyone knows a guy who "plays everything" (but not very well). but this is well done -- swingin solos, etc. nice
i love it haha if i hadn't met you i would almost say the video is slightly self obsessed, but i know your incapable of such things, so really im just wondering how you would ever play this live hahaha challenge there for you :)
@boyoftrain Depends on what you feel the entire point of jazz is :-) I've always felt that it was about personal expression - saying what it is you want to say in the way that you want to say it, rather than having to do it the way someone else wants it. All sorts of other things are elements of jazz (impro, groove, etc) but surely the main point is the freedom to do it your way.... this is my way :-)
@jamesmorrisondotcom Good answer (: Sorry, I didn't mean to put it down in any way. I was just referring to the fact that ensemble interaction is an important element in jazz and dubs somehow miss that whole side of it. Then again, a big band is a totally different thing to a quartet or trio. Flugel sounds tasty as, regardless (:
Very polite and correct James. However, let me be more direct, it is ridiculous to criticize this project in any way shape of form from the privacy of a computer somewhere in cyberworld. This recording should be a celebration of talent and creativity. Boyoftrain, your opinion is simply a contrary point of view for the sake of being different from the universal platititudes that someone like James Morrison deserves in this case. Be gracious....
how does it? this is is one of the greats of our time. And his jazz is primo. one or many can play, hes just taken himself and multiplied, who cares! its sick!
@boyoftrain I can't help but feel your comment misses the entire point of of this video. Now quit trolling around youtube like an assclown and go practice for a couple of years. Then maybe you could play a single instrument half as good as JM plays the viola de gamba.
james morrison is living proof that man has no limits.. every time he shows a surprise in skill and virtue...giving a exemple to any one that everything is possible if work hard
in case you were wondering if you could make a living as a big band musician, now YOU CAN TRULY FORGET ABOUT IT. my instructors were making 50$ a nite in the 70's with well known bands. you'd prob get the same now. if yer lucky.
i would love to know how this was edited/recorded

It was nice of the drummer to not wear a tux. It would have been hard finding a shaggy drummer in a sea of bald men...

Why are they so many haters on youtube ?
Are they so blind, that they even can t say one good word when something is good ?
Well, this here is pretty unbelieveable- so many instruments all beeing really able to play.
I play drums, piano, vibes and Hammond B3- but man ! This is the whole brass section !!!!!!!!
Come on guys, stop finding always something to hate.
Music is a great thing ! ...... somebody disagrees ?
