I absolutely love the sad part during 3:35-4:52. That part always makes me think how sad character Kefka is, despite him being a complete psycho. It reminds me how he was made that way in result of failed magitek infusion, and how he became what he is: nihilistic clown who cannot find any other meaning in life than utter destruction. And that's sad.

I like it but it could use some more work. The bass is kinda too much imo, it seems to just drone on and distracts you from the other parts of the song in many areas.

I love that you put all these links in your description though, awesome stuff. And I agree that the Black Mages rendition has too much synth keyboard in it...if that were toned down or replaced with strings, choir and/or brass it would be darn near perfect imo.

@exorcid My favorite rendition of this, as of now, is Prince of Darkness' version, though its only flaw is its lyrics. Which for anyone who listens closely, are actually in english.

(For the love of all that's holy, do not look for what he means on his site).

Once I knew what he said, it kinda detracted from the experience.

I'm not familiar with the BMs or FF remixes in general, so I can't speak to any trends... but I listened to their take and honestly see nothing comparable. The BMs approach is some strange meld of dated synth and metal, keeping the bits that actually would be interesting with a guitar bizarrely unchanged. Compare their "chorus" (2:50-3:18) which sounds uninspired and heavy to this one (1:02:1:20), a resolution of the tension before it, and a bad-ass guitar solo in its own right.

Actually, the metal makes it blend in. Almost every unofficial rendition of this song I've heard has felt the need to throw electric guitars into the works, instantly sucking all hope of innovation and meaningful nuance right up the remixer's own puckered asshole.

Thanks to mind-numbingly lame music acts like the Black Mages, people automatically assume that having an electric guitar in a song will make it cool. Nothing could be further from the truth in this case.

Kefka was the first villain in a video game (or, frankly, anywhere else) that I found myself absolutely HATING, with every fiber of my being.
