  • his was what they called a locking patella so when he lifted hsi leg up it locked in place

  • Hi, yes had one vet out specifically for him and had others look at him while they were out for other purposes during the year.. None of the vets thought it was locking patella as he didn't drag his leg first which seems to be common with that.

His stringhalt has all but disappeared now after feeding boiled/steamed linseed daily, and he is now out on lease to a girl who will be low level competing him this year :D

  • Hi how is he doing. Just a few question re him did u get a vet out I had a horse that showed hte same syptoms but was found to have patella problems not stringhalt as they can show similiar problems just asking that is all as to me he looks like he is locking up when he lifts his hind legs. My vets took a whole year to figure out what was going on with my boy and once we knew he lived another 3 great years till he sadly had ot be put down

  • How is he now? Did you make any nutritional changes?

  • Take a look at the most recent vid taken a few months ago.. he's pretty much the same. Can back up really well, still has the occasional leg-hike when hooning round the paddock (mainly when excited) so its still there vaguely but nothing like the spastic movement he used to have. Yes we have, he's getting a good dose of boiled linseed daily, I'd say 1/2cup - 1cup a day seems to be very effective!

  • Look also on the drafresource website. It has lots of info on EPSM.

  • My horse is a 700 kg warmblood. He gets 2.5 scoops of lucerne chaf with 3 cups of canola oil, vit E and multivit. He is on very short grass and sometimes some hay. Feed your horse at least 25% of his energy intake as oil. But just watch out he doesn't get fat. Exercise him as much as he can handle. Keep him of sugar (=grass, hay, pellets etc) I didn't notice any improvement with Equiguard or magnesium. Don't give up on him, it took me 12 years to get my horse right!

  • 12 years! thats shocking.. I got put onto this homeopathic remedy and I got a very good testimonial from a lady who used it for a horse who was so bad she literally had the hole dug for it. But it didn't seem to make any difference. He's in pretty good condition again now, probably a little on the fat side for a TB, and he's paddocked with a horse who can't tolerate protein (so no lucerne). How long did you have to feed the high fat diet for?

  • My horse is 20 now. I started with the oil last Feb when he couldn't trot 5 circles on a lunge without severe cramping. After a month I saw improvement and he is still getting better, even jumping 90cm. What he had looked slightly different then what you horse does, but when I started to research I read that shivers, stringhalt and epsm all improve with the oil diet. Look at youtube for a Clyde called Digger, he walks like my horse did. They call it stringhalt but that is more likely shivers.

  • Hi, have you googled Stringhalt / Shivers / EPSM? A high fat / low carb diet might help your horse. My horse had similar issues and after 4 months he was a lot better.

  • Yes, did a lot of research when it first happened. Have tried a number of things, but nothing seems to do the trick. What exactly did you feed your horse? At the moment Jay is on a 2l size scoop of chaff, same of sugarbeet, 1/2c Low GI Sport pellets and about 12g of Equi-guard toxin binder.

  • We think stringhalt... its a neurological disorder caused by toxins in plants or injury

  • whats wrong with it
