Still the best version, still the best actor/singers, best musicians and best arrangements. Murray and Gillan, Brox and Keith as Caiaphas and Annas, most soul and most FUNK. Some fools just have no perception.
"What then to do about this Jesus-mania? How do we deal with a carpenter king? Where do we start with a man who is bigger than John was when John did his baptism thing?"
true. annas is much more badass in this version compared to the 1973 movie. I think both rock, but the 1970 soundtrack group seems to sing the tunes more, and partake in the jesus christ project as musicians. I think the 1973 group acts all the songs out more. Both groups can sure sing, regardless.
Is this from a vinyl or is this from a CD? If this is from a vinyl it must have been in very good condition or you were very good at getting rid of the hiss and pops
though i am athiest and believe religion is a way to control the mases and was created by cultures of the past that could not explain what science now shows, the story of jesus is compelling and interests me, and parts of what some religion teaches like common kindness and such are good
The story of Jesus is so amazing and interesting. This musical just makes me closer to God. Andrew Lloyd Webber must have had a divine purpose to write this music to spread the word of Christ. Jesus, we love You.
Has anyone heard the original (1970) recording re-mastered on CD (and sold by Amazon)? Have seen a few reviews of the quality - pros and cons. Any opinions before I buy? Can't find my LP - even had a record player we never connected to play my small prized collection of LPs!
its amazing what they did in 1970 Gillan, Brox, Keith, Head, Eillingman and other best voices, nothing can be compared with this , any cover would be a shame! It's just a masterpiece and one of the best tunes of 20 th century, legendary music, and one of the highet achievments of humandkind in music! Can not live without this album a week. Everytime I get the same magnificient feeling listening to these songs,,,,
I remember when I was pretty young, my dad would play this song when we would listen to music, even though, I never even understood what this song meant for about 10 years, I just thought the voices were funny.
@19gonzaga99 : I've been electrified by it since my friend in high school put a set of headphones on me and said, "Here, try this and see what you think of it." Saw it live on stage in 1996. It drives me, and there's no escape from it. ;]
I am in no way an anti-chirstian, but this is one of my favorite songs from Jesus Christ Superstar. I just love it! It's very catchy and very humorous, in my opinion. Again, I am not an anti-christian.
@emmyrossumfn101 Chillax, no need for excuses, it's a kickass song, one of my favourite songs is Whats the buzz and i'm practically anti christian haha.
@JamieBugajski I think he (Ciaphas) does sing that part, but I could be wrong....I'm going mostly by what i saw in the 73 movie. There are two priests with high voices....Annas and a no name....the crackly one is the no name
@JamieBugajski one of the really high ones is Annas. the one that goes really low is Ciaphas....the leader of the priests in this city/town/province thingy.....I forget...
You have to remember that the goal here is to tell a story! That involves conveying emotions in the song. It's not just "a tune", it is part of a story line. The 1970 version is the only one that I've heard that stays true to telling a story. others seem to be showing off.
@boosuedon The word is "Theatrical". These interpreters of the original artwork at the direction of its creators Rice and Webber actually sang this on stage live. These were not some technical singers going through the motions, without emotion, just to cut a record in the studio or for film with multiple retakes and editing. Eliman is super in both I might add.
the fact that this is a concept album suprises me I mean the show isn't changed really from this album except for a few lyceres I've never seen the show but I have the 1996 UK recording and I've seen both film versions
Wow, the Annas in this version sounds terrible, he doesn't even reach some of the notes once it gets into the "what then to do about Jesus of Nazareth" part. Aside from that, his voice is raspy and highly unpleasant to listen to. One of the other priests sounds like he's on helium too.
I'll say the Caiaphas from this version is okay, but he lacks the power that either of the movie versions gave him. Even so, he shows impressive range: D2-B♭4, nearly three octaves, in a single song.
That is sooo weird for me to read that. I used to put the needle back on the vinyl over and over again just to hear Annas's voice. I still love it and was disapointed by the "airy" voiced actor in the movie version. I'm a musician myself, so I guess it's just a matter of taste.
Yeah, dramatically different taste. I've also heard that you generally like the version you first get to know best, and that seems true quite often. The first version of Jesus Christ Superstar that I got to know was the 2000 movie version, and I love absolutely everything about it. There are a lot of things I can't stand about the 1973 movie version, including Annas and his dull falsetto singing. I like some things about the 1970 album, like Ian Gillan's voice, but I cannot stand that Annas.
I can't agree with that enough - 'you generally like the version you first get to know best'. Having said that - the emotions of the 1973 version have just bowled me over, even though I grew up on the 2000 version, with it's better sound quality. The imperfections of the 1973 version just fit so well with the plot.
I was first introduced to the show by seeing a stage performance of it, and the next day my dad played the tape of it for me in the car, I'm not sure which it was, but a few years later I rediscovered the show, and was watching clips on youtube, and I tried to like the 1973 version, considering that that's said to be the "original classic" and all, but I just can't. To me, the 2000 version is just absolutely better in every possible way.
@retrorteretro The 2000 version has just been updated. Sure it hasn't the classic sound of this version but I takes a more dramatic approach to the story. More suited to theatre. They are both excellent in their own field... apples and oranges.
@Tarantinomaniac This is the best Annas there is. He's supposed to sing with a groove. This was written as a rock album, not a play. It wasn't designed to have operatic singers sing it. He sings it correctly.
The first voice here is not Annas, but another priest. Brian Keith of English Congregation sings Annas starting with "Listen to the howling mob...". I think he has a great voice.
i definitely would second that....this is my favorite recording, so much soul. I was disappointed with the movie priests because I heard this version years before I ever saw the movie. Brox and Kieth give this song so much character with the differing powerful voices they bring to the table
My fave on the original album. I don't like the movie version of this song, Annas sounds too high pitched. In the original it's the priest with the cool, conniving Peter Lorre rasp.
One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool!
