what exactly does the relay do?

A relay is an electric switch. You use a manual switch to operate a 2nd electro-magnetic switch. By doing this a person can handle a low voltage / low current circuit to turn off & on a high current high voltage circuit that you would not want to get your hands on.

Excellent railroad/Western Union Morse code sending. When I worked for the CNR SP CPR we used .  . instead of __ for zero, even thought the long dash is correct. Best regards Lee Mason MA at KA
