Yeah, mine failed after a year. I won't go so far as to call it junk (it performed pretty well up until dying) but I won't get another. I'm looking at ceramic grills now.
These things are junk. I've had three and all failed. Got two from Sam's Club and the company sent me a smaller one as replacement. Only used the about 8 times a year. Never will buy another one.
@MrCoalcracker A good rule for pork is 1.5hrs per pound when cooking between 225-250. So an 8lb butt should around 12hrs give or take. When the internal temperature hits 195 that is when I normally take them off.
Thanks for the video, I just got one and wanted to see how pre seasoning works. This is great. I am going to smoke some Pork Hocks tomorrow. wondering what seasoning I should put or just salt and pepper.
After three years, my heating element went bad and Masterbuilt's customer service said that I could buy a replacement smoker for $125 plus shipping. I declined and will go back to my Brinkman charcoal smoker. Masterbuilt does not stand behind their products. These smokers often trip GFI outlets and their heating elements often go bad. JUNK!
I've been through 3 of these because of heating element failures. The company has been good about replacing them, but they've quit on me in the middle of doing 40 lbs of pork butt for a party. I give up; I'll never buy one again, and I"m not going to bother having the company replace it again.
@mdsawyermd Yeah I knew that going in, but never had a problem with mine. I of course have had 3 smokers since and no longer have this one, but I guess I got one of the good ones.
I had one that I used very hard and it died. Even though it was out of warranty by 6months Masterbuilt sent me a new one....THAT is excellent customer service. I had to sell mine when I moved but I think I'm gonna get another one...the best ever and so easy to use. Applewood chips are the way to go.
If you want a dependable smoker build one yourself from raw steel. But a real smoker entails you to actually cook and watch your temperature since real smoking is only used with stick. NOT, charcoal, propane, or electricity.
@ManCaveSmokers Yeah, and buggywhip salesmen around the world are wondering where all the horses went. Please define "raw" steel for us. And, as far as I know, real smoking is done with, I don't know....smoke? and the smoke is caused by....let's say, heat? I've talked to several people who smoke food and they have all confirmed my gut feelings that this is "actual cooking". Turns out, the food doesn't know what the heat source is to produce the smoke AND, turns out it doesn't care either. : )
I got mine 3 years ago... no problems so far. I do mostly baby backs with dry rub - super smokers style. It'll never look so nice again! To quickly preheat the unit put boiling water in the oval pan. I microwave my soaked smoking chips (applewood) for a couple minutes before loading in the chute so they start smoking fast. Also, it helps to remove the burnt out chips between charges. Thanks for the vid.
Have this same smoker. The heating did fail but Masterbuilt sent me another case to replace. Just a case. Have to use doors, racks, chip and ash pan from the other. I have had some great eats but had the failure about 7 mths. into it's use. I keep mine inside my shop next to the window. That way I can put a fan in the window to draw out the smoke. Hope you enjoy this smoker. Great price 100 bucks off.
I've heard this is a good smoker, but reviews seem to suggest it isn't very dependable (tends to break). Please keep us informed, I'm trying to decide between this one and a more expensive model.
When I first looked into this smoker I saw some review mentioning the dependability and how sometimes the heating element croaks or the latch keeping the door closed breaks
To date (which is only about 2 months) this smoker works awesome, no problems. Even though I saw some negative reviews the good ones far outweighed the bad. Also with some of the reviews that said the heating element broke the people were able to call Masterbuilt and they had great customer service and got replacements easy.
It takes anywhere from 1hr to 1.5hrs per pound. The key is to check the temperature to see when it is done. For pulled pork you want to shoot for 190ish.
I looked at about 50 different recipes and websites for cooking times and temps. Most of them recommended cooking at 225 for about 1 hr to 1hr 15 mins per pound.
It may take longer, but the main thing is to watch for internal meat temp when it is done. I've read for brisket and pork shoulder you need to get them around 180-185 then pull them and wrap in aluminum for another hour or so.
I'm about to start a video up on the process of smoking the meat today. Hope you have fun with yours too.
Nice video- i got this at Bass Pro this morning also. i'm a total novice so i'm looking forward to your future videos so i can figure out how to work it!!
Ya I read the instructions last night and am glad I did because I wasn't aware that you have to pre season it.
I'm going to start smoking today and will have a step by step video on my first attempt at smoking. If you post any videos or have suggestion please let me know. Thanks!
There were 5 or six flashlights and they actually came with all the batteries which made spending $10 and awesome deal. They take 3 AAA's each so it came with 15 batteries!

@ManCaveSmokers I guess I don't like real smokers then. Not everyone can build their own or wants to.
