One more thing - I've always wondered why the Carpenters changed the words? The Sedaka version has:

"And keeping to himself begins to deal.

And still the king of hearts is well concealed. Another losing game comes to an end. And he deals them out again"

By changing this, the song loses a lot of the card game motif which I've always though was odd but oh well, it's still a classic!

Neil Sedaka wrote two versions of the song. One for himself to sing and the other for Karen. The one he gave to Karen is a more difficult song to sing. Many singers choose to sing the version that you refer to with the "card motif" because it is easier to sing.
