On this day in 1960, Marty Robbins single, "El Paso" reached #1 on the music charts. While the lyrics, melody, cadence, spanish guitar, tragic story and of course, Marty Robbins incredible voice, are each fantastic on their own, together they combine to truly become something greater than their sum. This song has proven timeless, transcending not only from country music into mainstream, but into other cultures and countries too. It is well known all over the world to this day. Thank you!
My dad used to sing this to me at the doctors office when I was little, to calm me down...I was afraid of the shots lol. I'm in my twenties now and listen to it whenever I feel homesick.
One of the best song writers in America. I understand he wrote this on a notepad in the passenger seat of the family station wagon as they drove thorugh the Texas bad-lands, while looking at the scene around him with the kids in the back seat. Am I wrong?
sorry buddy you didnt make this song mabey the whole copying song to youtube and then putting a pic on it but this cannot be you voice, plus i have this on tape and it was perfectly syncronized. sorry :(
What's really funny is how people are somehow getting to this video through video games..... Am I correct I'm not really understanding how people r talking about fallout and a Marty Robbins epic song??
I guess this is the recording with the fabulous Glaser brothers. I remember listening to this when I was 12 or so and crying with emotion. Correct me if I'm wrong. :-)
Hey guys if u comment on this u r helping me find out what I should do with my channel and I just want to no what the people who watch my most watched video what should I do should I just make a channel that does songs or what name it I'll be checking daily ur voice matters in this
da f*ck man. they should put a warning flag on these videos on which ones are shareable smh...cant show anything anywhere these days. maybe i wanna feed the video link to others that need to be schooled on good music?? ahh thanks for the post anyway
holy shit. Marty did this too?? LMAO this guy was bad ass!!. i heard this tune so many times in different movies its not even funny. I just got finish playing Fallout Vegas and i got brainwashed with the song "Big iron" and was tryin to deny i liked it and i really love it lol Well its cool i was told theres Country and theres Western. i hate country so that makes me a fan of Western then ^_-
This is the best song ever written. The lyrics, background vocals and guitar, along with Robbins unique natural voice all combine to be truly greater than the sum of their parts. My favorite song ever since I was 4 years old!
i remember when i was in nashville about 3 years ago and i went racing with my dad at the speedway. when they would turn on the loud speaker this was always the first song that was played. this brings back some good memories. i really hope they dont knock that place down
Thanks for the excellent recording of Marty (Glendale Arizona) Robbins, my fav Marty song to play and sing, nowhere as good but I love it and.........
telling a story for people, "something is dreadfully wrong" don't U love that, over a dame too.
my grandmother that is now 79 years of age introduced me to this wonderful song and im not much of a country person but marty robins is a spectacular artist. :)
I was never into country music but I always liked this song so much. I think it was the quality of the lyrics that makes this song so attractive to me.
A brilliant parody of the story connected to this song could be found by typing "Steve Martin - and Monkeys" in the search box. It's from the TV special "Comedy Isn't Pretty!"
i heard this song for the first time today. It really made me sad that music is no longer made this way. I haven't heard a modern day song this good since i listened to immortal techniques - Dance with Devil or Raconteurs - Carolina Drama. Songs like this just leave you in awe as you listen to each word being said in harmony with the music. its just good music, and thats hard to find these days.
They don't write songs like this today, do they? I mean songs with a narrative and not just some obscure way of saying your screwing the girl next door. It's a shame really because this song is an utter joy to follow to it's bitter-sweet end.
"Now we're gonna play El Paso baby, featuring the "red hot Marty Robbins baby!" "This is the old Wolf Man Jack beamin' 150,000 watts of power at you baby, from X E R F in Ciudad Acuna, Coahila, Mexico".... I miss the old days with Wolf Man.
I've always thought it funny that when I was in the Army, the 2 stations I was at had songs about them: Town Without Pity for Bamberg, Germany and this one for Fort Bliss (El Paso). Thanks!
@KopytoGroma Hey i used to deliever frieght there. You guys there are some real badasses i felt like i was in the military every time i dropped a trailer there.Hell i think i might have even gave a couple of salutes. They knew who i was and where i was supposed to be. Good ole days
This one song, from an era of other great talents, is better than anything I hear on mainstream radio. It contains a wonderful voice, instrumental skill and a tragic story.
Thanks for this song.... near and dear to my heart. One of the best voices... so pure and lyrical. Actually got to kiss him at a fair in Monroe, La, in the 70s. He was very kind and friendly.

Back in 1968 I went back to Scotland for a couple of years and I played the Gunfighter Ballads album till it nearly wore through. Marty made me so homesick for this side I just had to come back. I never got to see him live and I really missed out.
He was a real class country singer who loved the music and the cowboy life and legends, like I said before I really miss that old cowboy. I hope I get to meet him in the next life.
Ah! I don't blame him for coming back to El Paso!! Those leetle Mexican Senoritas are very preety!! I would have done the same theeng! Hola to the preety Senoritas!! Kudos to Marty for recording this great song!
