@IncidentalStrum - no, Aussie magpies, one of the shrike family, I believe. In South Australia, the white-backed magpie is also known as the piping shrike, and is on their state emblem.
Aren't rooks corvans, related to crows and ravens? We have them too, but they're all black.
My fiance and I noticed maggies doing this outside our house...it seemed that one would follow the other around while it was foraging and keep on 'begging' till the other fed it...it was the most amazing thing!
Jays do the same thing - seems it might be their equivalent to Mom, Mom, Ma, Mom, Momma Moooom, Ma that our kids do - if it wasn't so irritating, it wouldn't get the responce.
Mate you think that's bad we have an orphan one at the moment we are rearing and you should hear it when it lets you know it is hungry, its only about 6 weeks old, throw them some mince balls now and then and they will love you for it, they are a very smart bird.
theres this magpie, every time i go in the backyard it comes down to my yard, the best part is when it lands next to me, it looks as if it wants to kill me, but na, its just a good old friend. just give them food when u see them and u got ur self a friend. better than some humans i might say :P
good old baby magpie noise. yes it gets annoying after a while, but it doesnt bother me when i hear them. as soon as i hear them i rush out side to try to bond with them.
@mmarzbarr subuna is correct, that is a young Magpie 'i'm hungry!!' sound. Plus, younger ones also have lots of grey fluffy feathers and very-dark beaks which go away as they age.
It's a baby magpie, when it makes that sound its letting its mother know something is wrong like it's hungry, E.g it's begging.

I loved hearing the maggies every day...I miss it, sooooo much!!!

Its only the babies, they are crying. like human babies do when there hungry.

I think a lot of birds do the same thing, only Australian birds say 'mum' cause we spell it correctly :)
I've hand fed the mumma magpie in our backyard occasionally and she takes it and passes it on to the kids who are at a safe distance

Can U honestly get that close? Most birds run (well fly) a mile if U go any where near them.
