i have a question. if the outer shell is NOT broken. do you still need a napkin to protect the oils from your skin to the bulb. cause i have a bulb simular bulb like the other one.and i know halagon bulbs get extreamly hot and need to be prottected from the iols from your skin. please reply me to my question saying yes or no
I know you only demanded me to answer "yes" or "no", but I will explain more anyway: Only the inner halogen bulb itself needs to be protected from skin oil and other contaminants. On these bulbs, the outer glass shell doesn't get any hotter than a standard incandescent bulb, so no special precautions are necessary when handling them.
That's exactly what they tell you not to do with things such as explosives.. if it doesn't blow up, it might just be taking its time - never assume it's a failure - and you must never go up to it because it could explode when you're near :P
i think that once these halogen bulbs become fully in stock, they will put China out of the CFL business forever. Most ppl LIKE ME prefer the edison bulb.
en quartz capsule to burst if it has any contaminates on it such as moisture, oil, fingerprints. The contaminates cause uneven heating of the quartz glass and it will either:
Phebasan, It is safe to use the halogen lamp if the outer envelope is broken provided that you are not using it around food or children. Its not that the likely hood of anything happening is there, you are around exposed halogens often when walking through a shopping mall. However, the potential is there for the halog
My Friend, the outer glass is called the outer envelope. With a halogen lamp it is only to pretect the quartz capsule from becoming contaminated with moisture which causes premature failure. However many quartz halogen lamps are made with no outer envelope. I appreciate your curiosity in shattering an expensive lamp to make this video. Next time you want to destroy some light bulbs, buy them from us!
didn't crush E-Z like the bulb that RODALCO2007 did in the vise :P~, now spit on the bulb for a good boom ! that sylvania bulb would make a great shoplight as it looks tough as hell
I hope you are aware that halogen lamps emit a little UV-C and that the inner capsule is probably made from quartz glass which does not filter out UV radiation like ordinary glass does. That's one reason for having an outer bulb besides making them fit in standard Edison sockets.
I love halogen lamps for their warm beautifully sparkling incandescent full-spectrum light. Just don't ever use them without the front glass or outer bulb.
Wow. The moment you remove the safety bubble wrap, it explodes! I still prefer to use the old incandescent lights to the modern energy savers, but now I know about the suitable replacement, one that throws a little light!
I hate the slow warm-up time and AM radio interference caused by compact fluorescents. I now use blue-tinted incandescent bulbs, such as GE Reveal, Philips Natural Light, or Sylvania Daylight (not Daylight Plus). These give off a very nice clear white color which shows up on the camera the best, without the orange tint of regular incandescents. These halogen bulbs (such as in the video) are also very good but have a slight yellow tint.
I use CFL's myself, and you're right about the mercury content in the bulbs and such..but I have several in my room from GE, and all have output that is very much like a regular incandescent, and I don't observe any greenish tint. However, those cheap CFLs at dollar stores are crap....too blue and causing eyestrain.
I think generally speaking you want to leave the glass on there because halogens emit some amount of UV. All the fixtures I have seen have a glass filter in front of the actual halogen bulb. I don't know how much UV it is though, it can't be very much. (Had to find a germicidal bulb the other day to erase some EPROMs)
How much do those cost? I saw them at the store and thought they were mercury vapor lamps. Can't stand CFLs.
pussy cant smash a bulb..

Is it safe to use the halogen bulb when the outside frame is broken and if it still works because the capsule is still intact?

The biggest issue with halogens is the fact that you cant touch them or else the oil in your fingers will ruin the bulb when it gets hot.
Also, CFLs in 2009 have fixed all of the issues you mention except for mercury and maybe radio interference. CFLs also have the energy savings.
But, if you want a pure bright light always go for a halogen. Many exterior lights/contractor fixtures feature a halogen bulb.

Where do you buy these bulbs? I can't find them on the Home Depot website.
