The bassline change that comes in at 1:59 blows my mind every damn time...My joints get all loose, my head drops all the way forward, and I fall into an uncontrollable head sway for the remainder of the track... The moving power of real talent and feeling, being driven through the instruments... Unlike anything the mainstream media tries to force feed us in all forms of media...Death to pop music!
First heard this song on a jazz radio station and knew I had to have the album. It was one of those rainy nights just like it is outside at this moment. Guess the weather reminded me of this. Excellent post.
He and his bass became just one i hope for young musicians to learn from his musicality but also from his mistakes. We will cherish his music for eternity rest in peace Jaco.

@kishanna09 That club bouncer got out in 4 months on good behavior accoroding to wikipedia,' you know he was scared shitless at first...Paco was done with everyone by the eighties,'' Being rejected by santana ''snecking onstage'' gimmie a fucking break the crowd would have gone ape shit for that!..Maybe he did get to play then they escourted him off the premisises
@dannyhood66 that's incredible! I play bass guitar since were teen, didn't know Paco until 1983/84, when a friend of mine, bass player too, make me listen to this amazing artist. He was crazy for Paco! I guess, in the 80s every young bass player dreamed to be a little "Paco". Thanks.
@kishanna09 I never listened to him a lot..I learned about him from all those other untalented assholes from that one night in san francsico pink panther shit in haten it 1983 a merman i should turn to be like john mclaughlin, and that dude that always looks like his favorite pupil al dimeola? You are the same age as me then.. We missed out believe me!
The 3 different parts of this song are so flawlessly joined together, it blows my mind. This is one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite, Jaco song. GOD I love those steel drums. Where else can you hear pans paired with a soprano sax? GENIUS!!! GENIUS!!! GENIUS!!! GENIUS!!!
Greazy Meal, the 8-piece, soul collective from Mpls, introduced me to this cut and other Jaco. They also did the Sam&Dave-led "Come On, Come Over", with Herbie and Wayne Shorter in tow. Great Music breeds more great music and a deeper apreciation......
That is one heavy groove at 2:00. I think it's really set up well by the previous section. It hits you like a ton of bricks.
I like the way Jaco used so many different types of instruments. He was able to listen to may different types of music on the radio in Florida where he grew up and drew in the influences like a sponge. What does that bode for this generation of musicians that only gets to listen to the same type of pre-programmed crap on the radio every day?
well actually if you think about it we are at a time where people can hear other types of music muchhh easier because of youtube and the internet. I mean, who the hell really listens to the radio anyways except for gangsters and wiggers and little girls who don't know better
@headyrhody Yeah, but the trade off is loss of culture/cultural statement, which whether we like it or not has an enormous impact on the quality of music being made. I personally believe that without the internet we'd have much more interesting and diverse music being made subculturally which might then feed through to bigger channels. But the "NWO" seem hell-bent on homogenising human beings...
My pops took me to see Weather Report back in like 78 at Glassboro State in Jersey when I was like 8 yrs old. I asked my pops who is that skinny dude jumping around the stage and he said that's JACO. Been a fan ever since. RIP JACO.
Most bass players started playing bass because of Jaco, last Christmas i asked my parents (I'm age 15) for a Jaco tab booklet, it was almost sold out, even til' this day hes one of the most known/respected/influential people in the music world.
Jaco keeps on teaching new bass players like me the real spirit of rhythm and the variegated essence of music...it's really great: I think we all owe it to him for every single note he played when he was here among us! R.I.P jaco I really wish I could see him playin' live!
Wayne Shorter on soprano sax. One of the sickest sax solos I've ever heard in my life!! Herbie Hancock also played all of the piano and electric keyboards on this album. David Sanborn played on this album too.
When Jaco ignited from the pad, it illuminated his talents, and allowed for the music-listening community, to appreciate the bass and the payer, as more than just background implements to be used as foundations for others to stand upon!
He was a part of what he palyed, and it showed through his brilliant paying and composing!
Genius with focus and relevance!
As important today, as when he releases his solo debut over thirty years ago!
@crhymes104 Ha while they were waiting for his heart to stop beating apparently his father cracked a joke saying "I knew Jaco had rhythm but this is ridiculous"
@jammieman0793 The 'bouncer' was a back belt, lost it and beat Jaco's face so badly you couldn't recognize him. His hands were basically lethal weapons & they tried to bring that out in court, yet the cat only got 5 years. My old man & Jaco were good friends--they used to play handball on W4th.
