you cand do the stiching faster with PTGui pro or by just simply giving the software more RAM... (by Flash Sticks..hard drives.-> Virtual Memory) and that will be quick...even for 100 images :D ... must have a good pc too
It seems pretty unoptimized. First of all why does the human need to aline the photo's by hand ? that is silly. If the robot has a certain logic in sequence all the software needs to know is the number of horizontal or vertical pictures and then arrange the chosen set. But even that is crude. MIT has stich software that finds the matches even in distored foto's from a random set of foto's.
And uploading tens to hundreds of 8mp pix to a website ? come on ..!
And the software seems pretty beta too. The alignment process simply takes too long. I have seen stitch software that can align a set of different distorted formatted pictures and make a panorama faster then this alignment process took. A GIMP script could probably do it faster. Also the blending option takes too long . There is not a lot of picture to blend, why does it take that long ?
I do not see what is so "DUUHH" about that. I have used plenty routines to align imagery that are clever enough to do the job quickly. I'm working on a prototype that uses a EOS DSLR system that is directly controlled from the computer and it can fuse pictures together in between shots. It is a matter of fractions of seconds to align and blend 2 pictures with a decent algorithm.
The camerar and the robot are two separate devices taht are not integrated, that is the advantage of the robot: you do not have to buy a camera.
A disadvantage is they their is no integration (on software level) between the two devices. Therefore the images cannot be annotated with info about their position in the panorama.
The manual alignment of the photos seems weird: a big job for 100+ fotos. But if there are no bad fotos it probably does it correct instantly.
ive just purchased one. And i have a quick question that isnt explained on the site. The software says it needs a intel based apple mac for the software.
Is the software provided for the the mac a .dmg file ie a actual apple mac software or is the reason why it says intel based mac on the site is because it needs you to install windows on the pc to use the software?
Or i could put my picture on my site, and not on gigapan.org why would i want it there?

Did you code the gigapan software? Is it open sourced? which language is it written in?

Great idea, not a finished product.

You forget the size of each foto, each foto is a 10MP photo: DUUHH it takes long.

how long would a 2 GP gigapan take. im talking the actual photo being captured not the software bit.

100photos*3s = 300 sec = 5 minutes
200 photos = 10 min
300 photos = 20 min
do the math boy
