It is very difficult for us to get paying jobs in Mobile, Alabama. If you don't have amps piled to the ceiling, most restaruant/bar owners don't think you can play. They also lack any understanding of playing a solo to the changes - if it's not one pentatonic scale played mindlessly over everything, it sounds weird to them.
@Lutemann you should come to NYC and check out Banjo Jim's while you're up here. the Cangelosi Cards used to play there, and they were really great. Had swing dancers, banjos, trumpets, clarinets, and all that good stuff. Sometimes Howard Alden plays banjo at Birdland, also a real treat. Still wanna know where you got that banjo. Keep playing, people will listen. I know I would!
@Lutemann Jazz has always been misunderstood. It is more of a musician's music. Even when Jazz was "Pop" music, most of the fans were impressed with the beat or how high or pretty the horns played. This is one of the reasons that people like Bobby Hackett and Red Nichols could hardly survive and Louis Armstrong made a fortune.
Juan Tizol. You may have heard of him. He was in the Duke Ellington band; wrote jazz standards such as Caravan and Perdido. He played valve trombone. It has its place. I cant imagine figuring out all those cross positions on a slide trombone for a lot of lines these cats can play. O.o

@Mist9879
It's the result of a deft mixture of basic ignorance, jealousy and a very modern, fashionable lack of a musical soul

@leavellscott0481
Actually, the origional jazz players in New Orleans often use valve trombones; Buddy Bolden's band for instance.
