This song came out 8 years before I was born. I remember listening to it when I was 3 in my Dad's new 68 GTO with the reverb on the speaker. I still listen to doo wop now at 47 and my Dad is almost finished with restoring the Goat. Now with the song playing on the reverb, if only I could put it in reverse and back up to those wonderful years. There will never be music like this again. Thanks DooWopJoe for sharing!!!! Thank you to all of those artists!
Is Binns the tall guy among The Charts? Humble opening by him about Joe Grier ... I got to see 'em at the Apollo during the 1950's, and at an Apollo Theater oldies show during the mid-1960's! The tall guy was always a part of The Charts.
Gus Gossert used to say about a song like this, " if I were going to live the rest of my life on a desert island and I could only bring ten records with me, this would be one of the ten".
I think the combination of seeing the group and the fantastic sound system makes it seem as good or better than the original. Of course, that can only happen when the guys still have great voices, and these guys did! I thought it took them maybe 15 seconds or so to get into sync and their great harmony, but once they did, WOW!
goosebump city..i still get teary eyed joe,as those wonderful memories of the 50's & 60's come alive w/this music..thanks pal....two thumbs up!..keep-em coming please.
I nearly cry when I hear this performance... PERFECT! From the lead to the backups, just great! Reminds me of when I saw Leon Peels in concert a few years ago too... he had it ALL.. right on the mark, and these guys are solid gold too!
Just fantastic! These guys sound great! What a song this is! Saturday night in the summer, cruisin' with the top down, just you and your girl with Deserie on the radio, Tough to beat.
@gfhandel the group formed as the ( thrilltones ) in harlem, new york in 1956 joe grier was the lead, stephen brown first tenor, glenmore jackson 2nd tenor and leroy binns ( baritone ) and russ buford ( bass ) les cooper was the manager who changed there name to ( the charts )
Growing up on the streets of NYC in the 1950's, this was one of the most popular songs that we all tried to emulate on the street corners. Thank You "Doo Wop Joe" for sharing that video.
i had the chance to warch shows from dozens and dozens of rock and roll, rockabilly etc... but the greatest show you can ever watch is a doo wop show! nothing compares to that!
I always loved THE SKYLINERS and until a few years ago I didn't know that "JANET" had committed suicide, quite a while back. She was the high female voice in the background "that made the song'' she says the word "YOU" over and over in the end of the song. THAT PART MADE THE SONG.
I booked them years ago and still have a picture of them 'where she kissed the picture" THEMOJOMAN(.)COM see my webpage
This song and so many others from OUR ERA almost make we wanna cry. The kids today WILL NEVER KNOW will they. When I hear THE CHARTS do this I think of THE MARYANN BALLROOM in BURGETTSTOWN,Pa. & MY MAN PORKY and MY MAN SPIVEY,, THEMOJOMAN(.)COM see my webpage
I am very biased, but I think this music will live on. There are younger doo-wop groups still going strong, such as Roomates, Crystalairs, Chaperals, and Fabulous Flops. Three are also new even younger groups such as Earth Angels, Velvet Candles, and the I Love You Sos. All of these groups have videos on YouTube, and are working on CDs.
I agree, a real masterpiece! Knowing how they sound in this, I get teary eyed hearing the introduction how Joe Grier had not been onstage with the group in 45 years. The way they sounded that night, they should have gone back into the studio and done a new CD! Wish they had.
Wow!!!! What an incredible LIVE performance!!!! This is one of the greatest (and earliest) songs from the Rock and Roll era and to hear this performed so flawlessly speaks to the great talent of The Charts. I think if you see the musicians in the background reacting to the performance, you can see how much they appreciated the music. Great post!!
