I lived in Aberdeen for a year when I was 4, and I have always been extremely proud of that! And one day soon, I will go home to Aberdeen. From a young Aberdeen-lover in Norway :-)
My grandparents came from Aberdeen to Canada in 1920 and 1921, then to the U.S. I've never been to Scotland and this may be the closest I'll get. If so, it's aye enough for me.
I Love aberdeen Its Amazing With Each And Every Shop I Live Outside Aberdeen In A Small Town Named Peterhead Im Proud O My Country And Cannae Wait Till Gan Tae Cadonas Again!
I have been living in Singapore for 5 months now and am leaving back home forAberdeen in two, I just happened to stumble apon this talking to my friends about the aurora borealis and this has practically cured my feeling of home sickness. Thank you x
The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen song is a traditional Scottish song written by Mary Webb for a home sick Aberdonian lass who she worked with in a hospital kitchen. Mary Webb was English and lived in London and had never been to Aberdeen, Scotland. She was born in Leamington Spa and was a concert pianist.
My brother loved The Alexander Brothers & he passed that love onto my Neice before he passed away 4 years ago. The Alexander Brothers were great enough to sign some videos & cd's for him beforwe he passed away. Any song of their's reminds me of him! Especially The Northern Light's coz he was a Dandy Don all the way!!!!
My mother taught me to sing this scottish song when i was just a wee lassie. Although i am from Edinburgh i have to say Aberdeen has many memories from my childhood and i loved listening to this song again after many years. Thank you.
this was played at my uncle's funeral , feel extreme joy, sadness and pride when i hear this and am determined to see the northern lights before i diexx
Admittadly Aberdeen can look like a very dreich, boring and grey place when its raining but when the sun is shining on a warm summer's day Aberdeen is by far the best looking city in Scotland (however I may be bias as I'm from Aberdeen!).
this was first played at my uncle's funeral. I had never heard it before, what a lovely song to remember him by and i must see those lights before i die xx
@maggiemoo412 im sorry but its really hard to see the Northern Lights now with all the Street Lights Etc but u Never know u would probebly be better Outside Aberdeen City
This has been one of my favourite songs since I first heard it . I live in Nova Scotia (New Scotland) and am amazed that more people here have not heard of this song. It is beautiful, and the way it is sung in this video is the way I like to sing along. Thank you for posting it.
I first heard this song as an instrumental on a video of the massed bands performing for the Queen Mother - one of many great songs they played. I also have a version by Kenneth McKellar. One of my favorite songs to sing.
My mother has lived in canada since 1948 but she's still an aberdonian, never got a canadian passport. she always wanted to go back. Maybe because of the trauma of the post war period, being alone, being without a country, she feels in exile.
I'm an Aberdonian born and bred. Tell ye. You've nae idea how strongly I feel about my homeland. I support my country regardless. I appreciate your comment. Thanx.
@grandmascott Yes the song was a big favourite at the tivoli and brings back happy memories of Aberdeen in the old days. Been away now for nearly 50years but still remember the Friday nights at the Hop-Inn, and the Beach Ballroom on Sundays. Pleased to hear that the Grill in Union Street is still there, another favourite haunt of all us hardened drinkers aged all of 18 years of age
When i was little, my granda and dad used to listen to the scottish music on the radio and both stand up and sing this when it came on after lookin at each other with a massive smile on their face...cmon you reds.
I'm in London now and my folks are in Huntly[ish] but born and bred and what you putting that up here to mak me greet like a feel! Thanks for posting really happy new year!
