they just let people walk around a rr accident sight wearing nothing but t-shirt shorts and sneakers? i'd be sent home for showing up to work like that.
Thanks for sharing this footage! It's rare to come across photos from this derailment, let alone video like this.
A lot of people don't realize that this wreck was not to blame on bad track or a bad wheel set on the Amtrak MHC car. Both were found to be within specifications, and the NTSB stated the cause to be a "dynamic interaction between the rail and the MHC car."
This wreck also spelled the end for the dome coaches on Amtrak. Too bad!
Yeah thats a signal tower. Both locomotives remained upright and didn't even derail. There should be footage of them somewhere on one of the four derailment videos I have.

How'd the derailment happen?

the over weight full dome car

Flat head rail. NTSB blamed Conrail for the derailment because of the condition of the track.

uh the NTSB report states otherwise:
The National Transportation Safety
Board determines that the probable cause
of the derailment was the fact that
Federal and industry guidelines do not
currently address flattened rail head
conditions, due to an insufficient understanding
of the risk that flattened rail
poses to train operations.
howardkevinm 2 years ago
Did you read the entire thing?
mdamttc199 2 years ago
had nothing to do with the dome car.
howardkevinm 2 years ago
Agreed. I never said it did. The MHC car is a differernt story.
mdamttc199 2 years ago
was anyone killed?
railmogul2 4 years ago
No. But over 100 were injured, some seriously. Most of the seriously injured were in the dome car.
sasilv1129 4 years ago
yeah, ur vid got me thinking, I read the accident report last night. Apparently a flattened railhead caused it. Lousy conrail...
railmogul2 4 years ago
i am not surprized that the cars that were barely on the tracks did not even go over.

yes it was on #4 i think

is that a signal tower at 2:30, what about the locomotives?

Man this looks a train wreck I've seen before. The dome cars is trashed really badly. How many passenger cars were scrapped?
kmothersil 4 years ago
The last nine cars on the train were scrapped, from the dome car back to the last car.
sasilv1129 4 years ago
Damn that's hard on the equipment there.
kmothersil 4 years ago
Not really. In 1994 Amtrak had, for example, 100 more sleepers than it does today.

That is true.
