I'm joking about that... but actually I remember when I first saw Oxygene in my Dad's record collection (before I'd heard it, I was fascinated by that cover!) I really *did* think it was by a woman called "Jean"!

On reflection, I don't know why, because there is a photo of him on the back looking quite clearly like man(!)

@nunodias81; perhaps it is, but I'm not Portuguese. And I didn't say that it wasn't a man's name, obviously I realised my mistake later on!

In Scotland, "Jean" (the Scottish version of "Jane") is quite a common female name. But "Jean" (the French version of John) is not common. And I knew some female relatives and friends of the family who were called "Jean".

So it was an understandable mistake, as I was SIX years old at the time!!!

This tune has probably one of the best keyboard solos ever performed. Loved it in 1982 when I first heard it, wore the vinyl out. Saw Jarre last night in Birmingham UK, AV treat!

@felixrodstein I agree entirely; the original MF album version - as good as it is - is a different beast entirely when played on Concerts in China; the audience go absolutely crazy ape bonkers for it at the end! Well worth seeing the video of this performance, by the way; I was lucky enough to get the VHS tape years ago.

@MaBu888 I have the VHS tape of these concerts, and the audience went crazy all right; at the end (so it seems) of one of the concerts, Jarre walked around with one of the synths on a long lead, and let members of the audience press a few keys and make noise.

This is the version I heard first, and I much prefer it to the original studio album version (*) (well, except the horrible cacophonous ending!)

It has more life, with more life and I like the way he builds on the original melody (**) later on.

(*) The video of the original sounds much improved because it has some slight echo on it

(**) Is there a musical term for how he builds on the third chorus, making it sound different, but still recognisable? There should be :-)

the original name in french is more interesting because there is a playword: in french the title is actually "chants magnétiques", which literally means "magnetic songs"; but that is hear in french like "champs magnétiques" (magnetic fields). The English translation is basic and doesn't reflect the ide of the album.

This was the first ever Jean Michel Jarre track I heard. I found the Magnetic Fields LP sitting in my sister's record collection about 20 years ago. Once I played it, that was it.

I saw him at the NIA in Birmingham on 24 May. Nothing short of outstanding.
