Set that aircraft down beautifully without the gear.... Nice work by the Pilot. On Centerline, props stopped and looked like he feathered 'em, probably cut the fuel too (Never seen the emergency checklist for this aircraft obviously).... Just... awesome work. That's why you always practice those emergency procedures!!!
He did a perfect job, but it's very common for people not related with aviation to exagarate the pilot's work. He TRAINED lots of hours in order to be ready for these kind of emergencies. He solved the emergency PERFECTLY, but he is not god.
This is a Text book gear up landing, right down the center line, pilot was on the top of his game, I remember watching this live on TV. The pilot flew the AIRCRAFT not the problem
So I think nearly all of us agree, those presenters are annoying, havn't really got a clue, and ruined this great clip by the way they went on.....lol
Honestly pilots like thatone make you actually feel safe when you're traveling. People aren't perfect but some pilots are damn near close to perfection :p
I'm used to the media not understanding a topic, but that commentary was almost painful to listen to. Yeah, it would've been better for him to say nothing, lol
It's a double edge sword shutting the engines down on a gear up landing. If the engines have been stopped and a prop blade is at it's lowest point in the rotation, the first point of impact is going to be that downward blade, which would cause the aircraft to roll to the right/left, not safe @ 5ft AGL. In Australia correct procedure is to shut off fuel to the engines just prior to the flare but keep it idling with the props at full coarse (they will bend nicely upon contact with the ground.

These belly landings are over rated! The pilots and passengers always walk away. They do not even spill their coffee. The plane lands there are a few sparks, plane stops.
Ever hear, "Plane does belly landing, all die in cart wheeling fiery hell?" Ah, No.
Hell if a pilot can land on wheels, he should be able to land on the belly.
Pilots even do these by accident sometimes, they forget to lower the landing gear!
I'm a student pilot ( almost private), and I showed this to my flight instructor, he told me that this guy must really have a good in depth knowledge of aerodynamics to make it that smooth.
"Feathering" the props do not stop the engine, bloody announcer. It coarsens the blades so that they are alligned with the forward direction of flight. This reduces the drag significantly. This action is done in the event of an engine failure, or in this case a crash landing.
Amazing landing, anyone know the weather conditions when this happened? Was amazing how he didnt damage the elevators by going for stall speed, im guessing he's done this before! His pitch was picture perfect!
BRAVO! like the guy said... textbook. we had a twin commander perform the same procedure, did more damage to that tho since the wings are mounted on top of the fuselage.
pilots who have to acually put their lives on the line every day. my hats are off to themm, when the reality of this occures. these are some the bravist men and woman in the woeld
I hate it when reporters go on about shit they don't know about. Landing dead stick isn't much different from a normal landing. It was good work to remember to shutdown the props but the rest is a normal touchdown.
tordenkylling100, I don't know what you are thinking. My uncle works for the American Airlines maintenance division for the MD-80s. They absolutely do not second think about a plane landing on its belly without gear. If you don't know this, when they design planes, they build them based on different emergency scenarios.
i was in an inncident like that except it was in a learjet 45 my uncle owned hydralics cut out and we did a gear up landing we had 55ft of runway left it was scary!!!!!!
I wasn't there for the lear 45. I witnessed the king air landing. I am but a line tech, no a&p. I only know what I saw and heard from my friends in the tower and I heard the conversation on the arinc.
I am amazed because he set down level not in a nose high attitude. he must have not slowed down to stall speed. He came in low and used ground effect to "float" onto the runway. I like how he remembered to feather the props and kill the engines, my mind would have been elsewhere. He kept perfect centerline too with the rudder. He passes his Checkride
A very nice landing indeed, but not as fantastic as some would believe. With gear up the airplane will sit down very softly due to ground effect. Not taking anything away from the pilot, but the airplane is designed to land on it's belly in a gear up situation. Gear up landings happen all the time, some completely unintentional
