what was the other show on Disney satuday mornings that alternated with the Swamp Fox it took place in England I believe and the it was a British minister who fought undercover at night against some enemy. I used to know the name of the show but I've forgotten it now.
i bet they betted on the fact that no one would know those are sabres that are not correct for the time, those look very much like Civil War Cavalry sabres, just an observation
How differently kids were taught back then ... even in TV programs ... The liberal run networks today would never allow a show like this ... american history, bravery and ingenuity ? ... How great was it to watch Disney on Sunday night ... we all had our favorite "Lands" ... mine was adventure land ... with the swamp fox and Davey Crockett adventures.
@kenlo77 i loved adventure land- like you my favorites were the swamp fox and davy crockett and the scarecrow of romney park as well as Zorro! loved all these will be watching them all!
@kenlo77 I was thinking the exact same thing as I was watching this introduction. Kids today are really missing out & being cheated not getting programming like this. Now they get, "Hannah Montana", what a shame. We were lucky to have been around for the Golden age of Disney programming. Yes, we really looked forward to Sunday nights, with the Wonderful World of Disney and Marlin Perkin's, Wild Kingdom.
I remember watching the Swamp Fox religiously as a little kid. Didn't remember that Leslie Nielsen was Marion!!! What a rich and full life Leslie had! Thanks for posting this.
@rentatrip1 Hmmm, I don't really remember Scarecrow. But I LOVED Secret Agent in 1964, which was my first exposure, that I can recall, of Patrick McGoohan. Then there was the bizarre "The Prisoner"... That was wonderful age in Television!
Frances Marion actually wore a pot on his head, not a tricorner hat with a tail on it! Marion was ahead of his time regarding helmets. Those lavish blue American uniforms in the opening sequences of this episode are really surprising, by the way. The Swamp Fox, Elfego Baca, and Texas John Slaughter were all loosely based on real people some of whose stories were crazier than anything on Disney's television shows. All these series were aimed at kids and squarely hit that target.
(2) ...were at best a fair weather ally to the Continentals. They cared more about trying to take the Caribbean from the British than anything else.
Also by May of 1780 the Southern Army under Benjamin Lincoln had already surrendered when Charleston, SC fell to Sir Henry Clinton and the outposts mentioned were only established AFTER the fall of Charleston.
(1) Now I know that Walt Disney had to be somewhat quick with his telling of the events leading up to summer of 1780, but still much of what he said was inaccurate.
By that time the war was at a stalemate in the North. Washington's army (which by the way was in crisis somewhat due to lack of payment and supplies from the Continental Congress) had the British cornered at New York, though the British held Canada. Neither army there was moving. The British were responding to the French...
correction from last post.......My families of Hoff/Huff, Driggers and Burbage fought with the Swamp Fox, although this was Walt Disneys account I loved the story.
Man I haven't seen this since I was little. Between Swamp Fox, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, and Zoro, Disney made my imagination crazy. Thanks for posting!
@attoghaveympops me too. this is how i first came to know leslie neilson...as swamp fox. subsequently anytime i would see him, in any movie or tv program, i would always think of swamp fox.
GREAT!

They need to make a Francis Marion movie, starring Daniel Craig. The Patriot doesn't cover it

@kenlo77 Actually, "The Swamp Fox" and "Davy Crockett" were from Frontierland, not Adventureland.
