Aw! I spent the whole video laughing and saying 'aaaaaaawwww!'
I can't wait to train my cavalier king Charles spaniel :D I'm getting one this summer as our 15 year old black Labrador Paddy died after Christmas... It's a sad loss, but I think a little girl cavalier will be perfect for me -3
@KatexxEmily my condolences for your loss, losing a pet is so, so hard, but I commend you on getting another pet so soon to fill that empty place (even though there is no "replacing" Paddy. Since you have time, do your research on the breed and on breeders so you get a pure bred and not one from a puppy mill. Best wishes!
@mypuppie is it a website or a place wow I first noticed the cavalier in dogs 101 (or underdog) I looked it up its great im asking my mom thanks for the info ecpecialy non agressive thanks.alot.:)
@TheBlackdragon181 We bought Lucy from a reputable Cavalier breeder. Avoid buying from a puppy mill on the Internet because there is much abuse of dogs - also people that have bought from puppy mills end up spending thousands on their dog's health problems. You may have to pay more for a well-bred puppy but you will also spend less on health problems in the long run. A good rule of thumb is if you can't meet the mother dog IN PERSON, it's probably a puppy mill.
You did a good job training your dog that's a video worth how loyal she is to you but I need to ask you are those types aggressive at all ( goes for anybody)
@plumcakessss thank you for the compliment. Yes, these are the most affectionate dogs. Did you know that genetically, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is furthest from the wolf than any other dog breed?
@mypuppypie My parents spoiled her pretty bad, even though when it comes down to it she is a real good girl. My sheltie was raised/trained by me (I lead a strict and disciplined lifestyle and expect the same from my dog) and she is absolute gold.
@agentAA08 I started training Lucy when she was 4 months old with basic commands (sit, stay, down) and expanded from there. It wasn't until she was 2 that she started showing the ability to learn the more complicated tricks. I work with her every morning to keep her memory sharp - she loves it.
If it helps, make sure he knows how to "leave it" with the treat, and make sure he is sitting calm and the treat has to be one he REALLY loves. Once he masters that, then put the treat on his nose, he may understand that he has to be still. Also, I put the treat right on the black of the nose so she can feel it and judge how to move away to catch it.
Wow she is beautiful and so smart!! How long did it take you to train her? I love this dog so much and i plan to get one in the future. does she shed alot?
Lucy is 4 years old now and I started training her when she was 1 -- before that she couldn't concentrate beyond the basic sit, stay, down or come commands. I started with the "shake" and "other paw" trick and when she mastered that, I added another trick until we gradually had all 25 or so tricks that she does now. This breed does shed and I groom her daily and bathe her every 2 weeks.
@ZoilaSolis I do all my own grooming as I do not trust most groomers to do it right. Plus, I'm just handy that way :-) Her feet get filthy after her morning walks through the park so I have to put her in the sink and wash her feet and I use that snow white shampoo with a soft bristle brush. We have hardwood floors and I just use a hand vacuum to pick up the dust bunnies each morning -- we have a cat whose fur adds to the shedding but we keep it under control this way.
As with most of the tricks, I start off with broad hand movements with a treat in my hand and she just follows the treat while I am clearly saying the command word. Gradually, I minimize the hand movement or transfer the hand movement to a foot position but always accompany the voice command with some type of hand or foot signal.
I can't get my King Charles to do anything apart from sit. I thought they were difficult to train and had a reputation for being stubborn. Its an adorable dog - congratulations on training it so well!
LUCY IS MY INSPIRATION!! I Train my Oliver 10 minutes a day twice a day to get to be as good as Lucy. Can you tell me how you taught her to "weave?"
Oliver is only 3.5 months (please watch my video of his tricks! =D) and he can do some of these tricks, but Lucy is really the smartest Cavalier I've ever seen!
Lots and lots of compliments to you for training her so well!
Sorry for the delayed reply - I was locked out of my YouTube account for several months. Start the weave by stepping your right foot out in front of you. Hold a treat in your right hand on the outer side of the space between your legs to lure him through - all the while saying "Weave!". Repeat on the other side. Gradually diminish your hand movements altogether and just make the feet and legs be the body signal along with the verbal "Weave" command.
@teendreamer19 This one is very simple: put a treat in one hand and close your fist only partially leaving a hole for your dog to sniff out the treat. Hold out both fists, say "which hand". If your dog nose-bumps or paws at the wrong hand, open that fist to show there is nothing. When your dog bumps or paws at the hand with a treat, open that hand and let him/her eat the treat from your open hand. Your dog will get better at using his/her nose and that is always a good thing.
I use Natural Balance dog small breed biscuits and break off tiny bits for each reward, except for the balancing trick - then I use the whole biscuit.
@meggsmissymilo1 Doenst mather really if they are small and tasy :) good tip... for the bigger tricks give a bether treatment like a small peace of salami
lucy looks exactly like my cavalier king charles spaniel, patrick. i mean he even has the exact spot on his head with some brown connected to the spot too. they could be identictal
Every morning after her walk we run through all of her tricks. She loves it and looks forwards to it, and if I forget, she sits staring at me until I remember. Generally as she masters each new trick, I then start working on another one. Some tricks just don't "click" with her so after many reps if she doesn't catch on then I drop that one and find another that she enjoys. This keeps us both engaged and having fun.
@mypuppypie I have a blenheim and tri-color cavalier. They really are the most wonderful breed. You have inspired me to work on training them further, they are such smart little dogs!
Thanks for posting your videos, I've really enjoyed them!!
My King Charles is 6 Months old and has shortish hair, Do all King Charles have long hair? Or do they sometimes have short hair, I'm not sure if the hair is yet to grow longer in the future...
@ADMediaEmpire - We asked the same question when Lucy was that age. Rest assured that your King Charles spaniel will develop long feathers gradually for up to 3 years and most likely will have a long coat by 2 years of age. Unless you need to trim for some reason, leave the feet feathers because Lucy's back feet in the very front never grew back after a trim session at about 8 months. I do all my own grooming and I do trim between her pads so she doesn't slip around on our hardwood floors.
Oh my god she is adorable!!!! I'm in love with her!!!!!!!
